Jo Jo Diaz is an interesting fighter with a fun style. I've watched several of his fights as a prospect on Golden Boy cards, and this was a nice step up in competition. Not sure how far he'll go as a short fighter without a ton of power, but I'd like to see him again on HBO. I watched the first...

    The Bill Simmons Thread

I agree that parts of the Lampley podcast were interesting and I enjoyed hearing the behind-the-scenes stories about Cosell, sideline reporting, etc. The sad part for me was when Lampley recited the glowing review that the HBO telecast of Tyson-Douglas had received from a media critic (I...

    Maria Sharapova Fails Drug Test

I assume that every top tennis player has someone in their entourage (most likely the "physio" in most cases) who is responsible for keeping track of all the PEDs they're taking and making sure they're all undetectable or on the approved list. Sounds like that person in Sharapova's camp dropped...

I like Khan and I admire his willingness to call out the big names and agree to this type of challenge. But I look at this fight and I see nothing more than a better version of Canelo vs. Josesito Lopez, now with a PPV price tag attached. Dan Rafael just justified this fight on Twitter by...

I don't root against any "fighter's" PPV numbers, but I think any boxing fan should absolutely root against the PPV numbers of "fights" that are not PPV worthy. I like Golovkin, but Golovkin-Lemieux was not a PPV-worthy fight (I didn't order it). That was an HBO WCB-level card with a $60 PPV...

Gonzalez-Viloria was an entertaining fight and I'm glad that a great fighter from the lower weights is getting US TV exposure, because that hasn't always happened in the past.

That being said, just once, I would like Lampley & Co. to just call the damn fight that's in front of them...

Arod actually made his Rangers debut there in 2001 when they opened the season in PR vs. Toronto. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TOR/TOR200104010.shtml?mobile=false

The IV stuff is new. A lot of the other points (like the 3 positive tests that were swept under the rug) have already been brought up over the years by other writers, but Hauser does a good job of bringing all the info together, and his rep as a well-known writer gives it a bigger platform. I...

I think this is a little unfair. As I understand it, Bradley's deal guarantees him a seven-figure minimum for every fight, and he made ~$6 million or so for the 2nd Pacquiao fight. That's very good money for a guy who is a very solid fighter, but doesn't have a ton of marketability or a big...

Berto is a fringe Top 15 or Top 20 welterweight. His best win was a close decision over Luis Collazo over 6 years ago. Since that "peak", he's been beaten up by Victor Ortiz (who Floyd knocked out) and beaten up by Robert Guerrero (who Floyd shut out). He was also knocked out by Jesus Soto...

I've been saying for a few years now that HBO Boxing has devolved into an infomercial. They don't actually call fights anymore, they spend the whole telecast "selling" you on a particular HBO fighter or pushing a narrative down your throat. Lampley doesn't even pretend to be an impartial...

I don't really disagree with this in theory. But these different parties are not in business together. HBO and Showtime are rival networks whose boxing execs hate each other. They're not looking to share ratings. Arum and Haymon are rival promoters who hate each other. They're not looking to...

    1. Boxing has always been a terribly dysfunctional sport and likely always will be. It deserves criticism in a million different ways.

2. It's an immensely popular sport with a global reach that is still growing. People have been predicting its death for 100+ years and it's been...

Don't disagree, but contractually it's a non-starter. Floyd is Haymon/Showtime, Bradley is Arum/HBO. Floyd-Manny was the one exception. Otherwise it's 2 separate leagues. Floyd will face a Haymon fighter of his choosing.

I think we often see a guy with fast hands and automatically equate that with "talent" or "skill." Broner has fast hands, but I don't see any of the other skills that go into being a top fighter. He's not a good defensive fighter, he doesn't move his feet that well, he doesn't counterpunch...
