MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

If Cora was still the Astros bench coach and hadn't gone on to manage the 2018 Red Sox, do you think would MLB suspend him for a year, same as Hinch and Luhnow? I assume other coaches and team personnel were involved in the Astros sign-stealing schemes. It's interesting that the only coach...

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

It's ironic that the entity that introduced the key technology -- replay room video monitors -- is the league. With regard to slowing down the game, video replay reviews seemingly take forever. It'd be faster if managers had to make challenge decisions based on what they actually see instead...

Cora in line for major suspension?

Yes, the mere existence of the replay video room is the root of the problem. It’s unreasonable to have a live video feed available to players and expect them not to use it to steal signs and then share them with other players. That said, transmitting info obtained in the video room by text...

Cora in line for major suspension?

Is it reasonable to hope that because the Red Sox got their hands slapped in 2017 for the AppleWatch thing that the team didn’t engage in illegal sign-stealing using the video room in 2018 when Cora became manager? I know The Athletic ran a story saying some individual players stole signs when...

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

The league has already been “tipped” by Astros players that at least eight other teams use the video room for sign stealing. That will probably have no effect on any (ex-Cora) Red Sox penalties because the team will be a second offender. The difference between using video rooms to steal signs...

Cora in line for major suspension?

This is why I’m not certain that the players and Cora understood that what they were doing was cheating, as opposed to everybody-does-it sign-stealing gamesmanship. I explained this in the other thread, but basically, the league’s 2017 warning focused on banning the use of electronic devices to...

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

That’s sort of my point. It seems some players and coaches may have thought (incorrectly) that the prohibited action was electronically transmitting information obtained from video to the dugout, by AppleWatch or phone, for example. And that manually transferring the info from video monitor to...

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

A computer pattern recognition program has to be told what to look at. If it’s looking at a third base coach and the manager on the top step of the dugout is giving the signs, it’ll fail. As for catchers’s signals, if catchers and pitchers communicated via cards like the ones QBs use (and...

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

True. One fall in youth baseball (12U, I think) I experimented with third base coach verbal signals for bunt, steal, etc. instead of hand signals. Not instead of, exactly. Still showed hand signals, but they didn’t mean anything.

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

Is it possible that prior to the 2017 Red Sox Apple Watch incident, when the league clarified the rule against using electronic devices to steal signs, that players and coaches misunderstood the rule, thinking it applied to relaying sign stealing info from the replay room to the dugout? That’s...

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

There's an even simpler, non-electronic solution. Use cards similar to the ones worn by QBs on their forearms. Catcher and pitcher both wear them. Catcher's traditional hand signals indicate a number -- say 1-2-1 -- that decodes to a fastball. 3-3-3 could decode to a fastball too. There are...

Cora in line for major suspension?

Which appears to be determined by which teams The Athletic writes about.

Cora in line for major suspension?

As should players. And the employees monitoring the live video who relayed the info. The only thing I've seen about Red Sox sign-stealing in 2018 was The Athletic story about relaying of sign sequences by word-of-mouth to the bench for potential baserunners, i.e. not batters. That's cheating...

Cora in line for major suspension?

Will Middlebrooks made a wisecrack on Twitter about how nobody investigates teams that lose 95 games, but they use replay rooms to steal signs too. This also isn't an "everybody does it so it's okay" argument, but if it's true that every team does it to one degree or another, then...

Cora in line for major suspension?

"Implies" is exactly right. And as Plympton91 says, the Astros have every incentive to make Cora look like the ringleader. Did any other coaches or players "enthusiastically embrace the idea?" Clearly many players did. I'm not saying Cora wasn't involved. I'm saying it makes no sense to penalize...
