2024 Lineup (What we actually have - no trade speculation.)

Re: Walter - I believe they are not putting him on the 60-day IL because they would have to promote him to the ML roster. He would then start accruing service time which he is currently not while on the Worcester roster.

Casas has a left rib fracture. He will be out "a while." (4/23 update)

Not sure if the comment on May 1st opt outs is just speculation but going off this list, I believe the only first baseman with an active opt out is Ji Man Choi.

Right. I didn’t want to turn this into a trash Dalbec thread but the team just simply can’t keep running him out there and hoping for better results. Saying his offense is historically bad isn’t even hyperbole at this point. Dalbec is striking out in 53% of his PAs the past two years. That’s...

Mike Ford’s 2023 spray chart overlayed at Fenway:

This is true! But given our constraints (financial but also a guy that can be easily dumped if Casas returns) and where we are in the season, I don’t think you’re going to find a perfect fit. I’m just looking for a guy that will put together professional plate appearances and play competent...

Scouring the AAA leaderboards…what about Mike Ford? He’s with the Reds now and I imagine he could be had for some C-level prospect. He was actually pretty decent with Seattle last year with a 123 wRC+ last year in 251 PAs.

Beyond the prospect cost, does anyone think this ownership group would green light adding $5M to $10M+ to this year’s payroll? This is a group that consistently chose the cheapest option (or in some cases did nothing) to build out depth in the offseason. Do we think the performance over the past...

To err is human; three errors is the Red Sox: the defense thread.

I wouldn’t completely absolve the catchers in this discussion. Although not really boneheaded plays, the Sox lead the league in wild pitches + passed balls. I suspect some of that could be the increased offspeed pitch usage (and SSS obviously) but Wong has never been great at blocking pitches...

Red Sox, Ceddanne Rafaela agree to contract extension

@Fishy1 did a nice job looking at walk rates so I figured I would try a similar exercise with chase rate. I think the walk rate is a problem but I view it more as a symptom and not necessarily a cause. I looked at hitters aged 23 and younger who had at least 100 plate appearances over the past...

Red Sox, Ceddanne Rafaela agree to contract extension

With the exception of Tovar (and the jury is still out on his bat), the difference between those players and Rafaela is that they all have at least average power. Rafaela’s max exit velocity at this point in his career is poor (ranked 4th lowest of 197 qualified hitters this year). He’ll get...

Red Sox, Ceddanne Rafaela agree to contract extension

Be careful…I suggested this a few days ago and someone called it “one of the craziest things ever posted on SOSH.” But you're probably right. The off-season was the time to build depth to allow Rafaela time in Worcester and the team chose not to do that.

Red Sox, Ceddanne Rafaela agree to contract extension

And this is coming from me…a guy who wanted ship Refsnyder out of town all offseason! It’s really a combination of Rafaela’s offensive performance and roster fit. Despite excellent defense, Rafaela has been one of the worst hitters in the league in the early going. As I said, his underlying...

Red Sox, Ceddanne Rafaela agree to contract extension

The deal seems ok but you would hope for more of a discount (or option years for years 7 and 8) this early in his career and with the obvious offensive warts. He has a high floor given his defense/versatility so it’s unlikely the contract becomes a disaster but just doesn’t feel like there is a...
