    NBA All-Kobe game 2020 (all-star game discussion)

I didn’t mind the end of the game taking forever because both teams were going hard and were relatively evenly matched. I don’t like intentional foul fests but this was thoroughly enjoyable

The Athletic: The Astros stole signs electronically in 2017 part of a much broader issue for Major League Baseball

The anger of non-Astros suggests to me that the Astros took sign-stealing to a level that for many was totally unfair, though. So you could have a dynamic where the Astros are annoyed because they genuinely feel like they're making made an example of when everyone else was stealing signs, and...

We’ve seen people deciphering codes called Codebreakers and Windtalkers, but gosh darn if this isn’t a Wind Breaker

    Kobe Killed in Helicopter Crash

The parallels with “now is not the time to discuss gun control” are all there: it will never be the right time. Now is the wrong time because he just died. In a week it will be the wrong time because it’s the funeral. In two weeks it will be the wrong time because why are you bringing this up...

    Kobe Killed in Helicopter Crash

On the cause of death - how safe are helicopters really? I get that they let VIPs feel great skipping over LA traffic, but I presume Kobe had access to the finest pilots and even then this happened. A quick look at the NTSB stats, Non-Scheduled Part 135 Accident Rates (Helicopters) ranged...

    Kobe Killed in Helicopter Crash

You really need to stop using the phrase "virtue signalling", or learn what it is implying. Because it isn't just saying "I think it's in poor taste to bring up these issues". It's implying that these issues don't actually matter to the person talking about them, they're just faking outrage to...

    Kobe Killed in Helicopter Crash

It would be in poor taste to go to Kobe's funeral and reference the sexual assault allegations. It would be journalistic malpractice for a news outlet to write Kobe's obit and not reference the sexual assault allegations. In my mind, a discussion on SoSH is much closer to discussing the news...

    Kobe Killed in Helicopter Crash

I disagree. TSC isn't saying "I'm glad he's dead" or even "let's emphasize his bad qualities to his grieving family", TSC was saying "I don't think you need a hagiography of Kobe when discussing him on SoSH".

2020 MLB Hall of Fame News and Notes

You know, Ortiz potentially being a unanimous HoF selection when Jeter wasn’t would be so delicious the thought of it just brought a huge smile to my face

2020 MLB Hall of Fame News and Notes

Before that post you referred to the voter as possibly being a self righteous gatekeeper, which suggests to me you don’t consider “I don’t want to make Jeter a unanimous selection, because that would unreasonably elevate him” a valid reason. I personally think that’s an absolutely valid reason

2020 MLB Hall of Fame News and Notes

Since people have made unanimous selection some sort of marker of extra greatness, I have no objections to tactical voting for HoF, and I think the outcome expressed by the collective vote here is perfect: Jeter is absolutely a first ballot hall of famer, and absolutely not deserving of...

The Athletic: The Astros stole signs electronically in 2017 part of a much broader issue for Major League Baseball

I guess the question is what "this" means in terms of how long this has been going on. To me, the sign stealing the Astros did was likely on a level qualitatively different from what other organizations are doing right now. I'm inferring that from the fact that other MLB players seem genuinely...

The Athletic: The Astros stole signs electronically in 2017 part of a much broader issue for Major League Baseball

Buster Olney said something along these lines on his podcast today. Said that the Astros might have thought it wasn’t that bad since teams sometimes skirt the line, but for lots of teams learning what the Astros did was clearly way over the line.
