Thank you, Petey: Dustin Pedroia announces his retirement

I was lucky enough to be at Game 1 of the 2007 WS. Pedroia leads off the bottom of the first. Takes a pitch, then BOOM! HR. Romp follows.

Happy 7th anniversary to David Ortiz’s game tying ALCS grand slam!

Thanks for the YouTube summary, Archer1979. I miss Pedroia.

Baseball Writer Roger Angell Turns 100

Reading The Summer Game changed me from being a fan of one team to being a fan of baseball. It and The Glory of Their Times are the most influential baseball books I've read in the past fifty years.

Baseball Writer Roger Angell Turns 100

They had an early 100th birthday party for him in Brooklin, Maine, a few weeks ago. Governor Janet Mills was there to declare Roger Angell Day, which was pretty cool. He's the only writer to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame (writers' section, of course) and also to the American Academy of...

Ryan Brasier retweets video mocking Jacob Blake response

This is great. Thank you. Eloquent, heartfelt, insightful, highly personal but also objective and rational. Very, very well done. Please keep us posted on any developments.

    An Homage to Hal Smith

    An Homage to Hal Smith

Well, huh. Glad I didn't offer to bet anyone. But the Buccos won, and that's all that count. Have stood at home plate in Posvar Hall at Pitt, FWIW.

    An Homage to Hal Smith

I respectfully disagree. I'm quite sure it's Bob Prince. I grew up listening to Mel Allen's voice, and while that's a long time ago now, I feel fairly confident that I can still distinguish between it and someone else's voice.

    An Homage to Hal Smith

No, that is not Mel Allen announcing.

    An Homage to Hal Smith

Interesting how the announcer didn't make a big deal out of the checked swing--didn't say "Boy, was he lucky getting away with that!" or anything to that effect, just called it a checked swing, gave the count, and waited for the next pitch. Fascinating! Thanks!

    2020 Quarantine Photo Thread

Opening Day, 2005. The opening ceremonies were beyond fantastic. Of course. Near the end, there was a moment of silence for the recently departed Pope John Paul II. There was also a moment of silence for the late, great Dick Radatz. The ballpark was absolutely silent. Then some leatherlungs over...

    1975 World Series re-watch

In Zim's defense (sorry), wasn't he yelling, "No, no, no!" but what was heard was, instead, "Go, go, go!"? I'm talking about Game Six.
