Then Hader comes in to protect the 12-11 lead, first four batters walk/single/double/IBB, tie game and bases loaded with no one out, before he strikes out the next three guys. 12-12 to the 10th, this is a wild one...

In a much less wild one, the Rays in their super sweet devil ray sorta throwbacks walk off in the 13th against DET, 1-0.
9 total hits in this one, the WAS/MIL game has had 9 HRs so far. I love baseball!

Also I just saw Nick Anderson’s line since coming to TB, yowza.

That WAS/MIL game had to have been one of the craziest games ever. After both closers got hammered in the 9th, neither team scored for the next three innings. Then in the 13th, Yelich homered and then WAS tied it again. Then in the 14th, Thames hit a 2 run HR and in the bottom of the inning, Hiura had a pretty easy throw to first to end it. He threw it wildly, a run scored and it was 15-14 MIL but WAS stranded the tying run at 3rd. Going back to 2009, teams were 569-0 when scoring 14 runs until this one.

And maybe the best part was that both pitchers at the end were J Guerra, Javy Guerra vs Junior Guerra.

The Nats used 10 pitchers and the Brewers used nine. That is pretty remarkable even when teams have extended rosters but even more so now.

Adding to how watchable this was, both teams are in the WC chase ... so it wasn't a Pittsburgh vs SD late summer who cares game.

Man ... the Yankees sure are turning into a bunch of entitled whiners.

Every borderline strike (or ball, depending on the context) and you’ve got someone in their dugout screaming profanities at the ump, or Brett Gardner acting like a toddler and banging his bat against the ceiling.

That has to be related to Boone. They weren’t like this with Girardi as manager.

There is some truth to this, but it's mostly been three games. The first one, a month or so ago, was the 'savages in the box' one and the home plate umpire was killing them, bad call after bad call and totally lopsided. After Boone went on his rant that game, the ump actually got quite a bit better and NY won the game. Yesterday was the second game, Maybin got punched out on a pitch that was never a strike, which he wasn't thrilled about, but the umps escalated it as much as the Yankees did. Today is obviously the same crew, and Cuzzi is behind the plate after he threw out both Gardner and CC from the bench yesterday, and the fact that he is doing a horrendous job behind the plate today isn't helping.

I suspect there are some purists who dislike the whole spectacle but the MLB Little League Classic is cool as hell imho. The sport needs to do more of this stuff to build a younger audience. And the LLWS is exactly the sort of event they should be using to build mindshare with the kids.

Acuna hit a long single today. Actually it would have easily been a double except he admired the ball and ended up at 1st. Then he got thrown out trying to steal second.

His manager promptly benched him in the 4th inning and explicitly said it was because of his lack of hustle.

Nats on a roll, Strasburg pitches 7 brilliant innings against PIT tonight and leaves up 1-0. Bullpen comes in: single, walk, single, SF, 3 run HR, 4-1 PIT.

Another one, Brewers at the Cardinals, MIL scored 2 in the 6th to go up 2-1 and then went to the bullpen, who gave up 8 runs combined in the 6th and 7th in a 9-4 loss.

Indians and Mets go into extra innings tied at 2-2, the superhuman Carlos Santana goes deep in the top of the 10th, CLE up 3-2. Hand comes in for the bottom of the inning, Rosario with a nice opposite field double, sacrifice bunt moves him to 3rd, Francona IBBs Alonso even though he would be the winning run, Conforto hits what looks like a game-tying single into the hole on the right side...

but Santana ranges way off the bag, fields it, throws to second for the force to start the easy DP...

except Brad Hand isn't covering first, tie game instead of game over.

And the Mets win it two batters later, brutal brutal loss for CLE.

This is the fourth appearance in a row Hand has been scored on, he's a complete mess right now with zero command. It seems like they need to warm someone up at the beginning of the 9th right now, because when he's off you can't get him out of there fast enough. He also broke for home instead of first on that play, although if there's a play at the plate there, it's going to happen long before he can back it up. They managed to win his last three meltdowns anyway (thanks mostly to Santana) but not tonight. Wasted opportunity to cut into Minnesota's lead.

Santana has hit 14 of his 30 home runs in the 7th inning or later, best in the AL.

Kris Bryant with a 2 run HR bottom 8 to put the Cubs up 12-11, Kimbrel will get a chance to close this.

Whoa, just when you think maybe you have seen every way to lose in baseball, today the Astros were down 2-1 in the 9th, two outs, Robinson Chirinos up. Chirinos is 3 for 3 at that point and needs a triple for the cycle, and he doubles into the right-center gap. But he goes for third, presumably at least in part because of the cycle, and is thrown out to end the game.

I didn't realize the Cubs' home/away split is so jarring (44-19 at home, 25-39 on the road).

looking at the elite teams this year, the Astros are 45-16 at home, 36-31 on the road. Dodgers 50-16 at home, but only 34-28 on the road. Yanks are 49-20, 34-25.

we were 57-24 last year at home. but while the Dodgers only need to go 8-7 the rest of the way at home to eclipse that, our 51-30 road record last year plus 7-1 playoff road record stands as very impressive.

Gerrit Cole is just a beast. Co- Cy Young with Verlander. 0.98 WHIP. Tonight was another typical 7 shutout inning, 12 K’s performance. And he’s probably their Game 2 starter after Verlander.

Such a good team all around. I'm still amazed we beat them 2018 ALCS, let alone 4-1.

They weren't very healthy then (Altuve and Correa and Morton), and they're showing cracks again down the stretch, Correa onto the IL again this week and Pressly with arthroscopic surgery out 4-6 weeks. Agreed that they were the AL faves both last year and this year, though.

I check in on the Dodgers and they only got 1 hit through 8 innings tonight. but then a shitty reliever for the Jays with a 7+ ERA gives up 3 hits and loses the game, adding yet another walk-off to their insane 51-16 home record.

Ken Giles exists doesn't he? is this tanking?

Giles is on paternity leave. Tough one to fake.

Law had a 7+ era in 13 innings last year but a less shitty 4.63 before today's hadn't been scored on in 14 outings prior.

I don't usually understand the objection to various uniforms. Basically, who cares? But these all-white unis are the stupidest things: you can't read the special player's nicknames b/c white on white doesn't read. For a look, go to mlbn, which is currently carrying a couple of games, including Atlanta v. NY.

deGrom endears himself further into my heart, having nothing to do with the nickname nonsense and just using 'deGrom' on the ridiculous looking white shirt, where you can't read the names anyway.

Truly awful, the Yankees and Dodgers only play every three years and we get these monstrosities.

"Terry Francona, on the Indians’ all-black uniforms: “What’s the slogan, ‘Let the kids play?’ Let the grown-ups look like morons.”

Francona joked that he isn’t going to make any pitching changes because he doesn’t want to be seen in public."

The Phillies were up 7-0 in the 3rd tonight on Miami, who have lost six in a row and just scored three runs total in a three game sweep by ATL.

3 1/2 innings later, Miami is up 15-9.

Heh, good call, walk and a RBI triple for Hechevarria (recently released by the Mets) puts ATL up 2-1.

Edit: Nope, runners called back because the ball got stuck in the fence, second and third and no one out.

It’s strange that he’s up, his velocity and control are both worse this year. He was getting hit so hard in the super ball PCL that they sent him back to AA and the minor league balls, but he’s even been getting hit there recently. Next start would be against Paxton and NY on Wed, we’ll see if they leave him up but I doubt it.

The good news for the Mets, they tied a major league record striking out 26 Braves in the game.

The bad news, they went down 1-2-3 to Mark Melancon and lose 2-1.
