Didn’t see this being discussed anywhere.

According to multiple people who were informed of the incident, Cespedes has traps on his ranch for a variety of reasons, including to keep boars away from people. But one boar was removed from a trap — perhaps by Cespedes — and either charged toward Cespedes or startled him, causing Cespedes to step into a hole. Cespedes suffered the fractured ankle at a time when he was recovering from surgery to both heels that already was jeopardizing his playing status in 2019. The ankle fracture guaranteed that he would not take an at-bat last season.
The union and the Mets have agreed to a restructuring of his contract that allows him to keep the $14.8 million he was paid in 2019 (out of what was supposed to be $29 million in guaranteed salary) and reduces his 2020 salary from $29.5 million to $6 million, with incentives that could increase that amount to $11 million. The agreement staved off an arbitration proceeding where the Mets would have sought to void Cespedes’s contract.

My take: I’d rather have the union’s case than the Mets’ case. There’s nothing the union cares more about than the sanctity of guaranteed contracts, and an arbitrator who wants repeat business would be hard-pressed to invalidate a contract in a case that was less than open-and-shut. That said, it wasn’t a slam dunk — the circumstances were highly unusual, and if the contract contains broad language forbidding the player from engaging in dangerous activities, common-sense would argue that dealing with a trapped wild boar violates the contract. The downside of losing at arbitration was much worse for Cespedes than the Mets, so I’m not surprised the case settled on terms more favorable to the Mets than my armchair opinion of their odds of success would suggest.

And that boar died happy knowing he finally got revenge for his older brother.

I'm just surprised the Mets didn't come out of this somehow owing Yo money for the next two decades.

There's a lot of construction there this winter. Wonder if that extra-attracted the boars.

Wild hogs are terrifying, beyond destructive and crazy fast for their size. Luckily he wasn’t killed, honestly. One a month or so ago killed a woman in Texas.

This is the part that's confusing to me and why I feel like there is maybe still more of this story coming: the boar charges him, he steps in a hole and fractures his ankle and that's it? The boar feels bad for him and leaves?

"either charged... or startled him"
My money's on the latter, with the former being developed in the retelling.

Saw a wild boar in Florida two years ago. Nasty thing -- and a tie into a Red Sox experience.

My pastor/counselor and his wife were in FL for the winter - we were in Kissimmee, but there's a great barbecue in Winter Haven / Auburndale = Smokin' Jim's, arrguably the best BBQ in the state. We were heading down that way.

The restaurant is owned by a Red Sox fan and he has profusely decorated the place with Sox stuff, a throwback to when the Sox were in that town for spring training.

The boar - we saw him on US 17 as four of us were on the way down to Winter Haven. If we had hit him, it would have likely come close to totaling the car. And we did not hang around to taunt the boar.

Recommendation - if you ever get to Winter Haven, you can still see Chain'o'Lakes park, and the town itself. And do get to Smokin' Jim's.

And watch out for wild boars.

Huh, didn’t know about it and it’s five minutes from where we’re building our house.
Do they have mustard based sauce? That’s the southern bbq litmus test. Also, what do you recommend? Ribs? Brisket?

They may have, but this is Florida BBQ, not Carolina BBQ .. so it's not mustard based. Go with the ribs. Can't go wrong.
Don't eat before you get there.

Correction. South Carolina uses a mustard base. North Carolina uses a vinegar base.
