Alicia Keys (host, I think) ad-libbing at the Grammys about Mr. Bryant.

Singing with BoyzIIMen now, just one chorus. (It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday, obviously)

Suffice to say this reminds me of an anecdote from Marc Evan Jackson about the helicopter pilot that flew him around for a movie that he was filming:

“Don’t ride in a helicopter unless you absolutely have to.”

RIP Kobe.

Helicopters are generally as safe (or safer) than small, fixed-wing aircraft. Mostly due to piloting.

Here’s some data from 2017:
0.59 fatal accidents per 100,000 flight hours for helicopters
0.9355 fatal accidents per 100,000 flight hours for general aviation
0.199 fatal accidents per 100,000 flight hours for charter flights
0 fatal accidents per 100,000 flight hours for commercial/ regular scheduled carriers (0.05 in 2018)

I guess the logistics of canceling and rescheduling games would be a nightmare, but it’s seems terrible to be playing NBA games tonight. There’s a pall over every arena.

Just got off a plane and had half a dozen texts waiting for me. Shit.

I didn’t like him. But I kind of thought he would live forever.

He raped a woman so no the NBA should not cancel games over his death.

I feel terrible for the others on board and their families (and Bryant's family) But I ain't gonna lie, I find the unadulterated tributes to Bryant sickening and I cannot imagine being a victim of sexual assault today. I have a dear friend who is a survivor of rape and she has remarked that these tributes actively contribute to the very fabric of extreme rape culture that continues to hover over our society. Fuck Kobe and fuck our collective response to his death today.

When Rev quit the board, he sent me (and others) a missive on why it was he was quitting.

It was thoughtful, and smart - and very Rev.

One of the things that stuck out to me immediately on my first pass was the following.

“Grown-ups need to be able to have conversations that are uncomfortable, and people who are intolerant of mental discomfort need to be told to grown up.”

So let me take advice from one of the few people I’ve admired on this board and say: Some of you need to grow the fuck up.
lol, "... need to told to grown up." He shoulda sent me that to edit before he sent it.

FWIW, ESPN kicked off their coverage after the Celtics game with a montage that did include the arrest.

I have always despised Kobe. For being a rapist, for his arrogance, for being a general douchebag.

I will say though, his death has affected me. There is of course the normal component to a celebrity dying where we all think about are own lives, the “soundtrack” type of thing that we feel with celebrities we have seen and thought about in our lives so much for so long.

It has mostly affected me because of his daughter. Seeing the many pictures of him with Gianna — and the look she has in her eyes when she is looking at him, and the smile on her face with him. That cuts deep. When I think about a 13 year old girl who idolizes her Dad being lost, and 3 other girls being left behind it is devastating, particularly having two daughters myself.

I could care less about Kobe being gone, but his death has hit me pretty hard and I understand why people are reacting the way they are.

Also, this thread is a shitshow and SoSH should be better.

My reaction is pretty similar.

I was watching the Grammy red carpet feed and wondered how many survivors of abuse or rape had to speak glowingly of Kobe to the cameras.
