The overall positivity rate for the NFL's coronavirus testing program has been 0.46%, well below the threshold set this summer for avoiding outbreaks at team facilities.

Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL's chief medical officer, reported the following data during a conference call Wednesday with reporters:

  • Through Tuesday, the league had conducted 109,075 COVID-19 tests.
  • The 0.46% positivity rate includes all players, coaches and staffers.
  • The player positivity rate has been 0.81%.
  • During the initial intake process, the league tested 9,983 people. The positivity rate for those tests was 1.7% overall and 1.9% for players.

With Kittle about to set the market for top TEs, Travis Kelce is apparently getting slightly less than him in years and yearly average. $47M/4 year extension, $28M guaranteed. His cap number appears to increase slightly (from $9M to $11M), which Sportrac hasn't logged yet, but if I'm reading this right:

...KCs top 10 players will cap hit at $150M. That leaves $25M to pay the rest of the roster. This seems untenable.

It mirrors the ‘00s Colts strategy. It can work, of course, but you really need to pay big bucks to truly elite guys at key positions (check) and overperform against baseline in drafting/signing low cost street FA (we’ll see).

The real trick is whether they can roll over the core around Mahomes well enough to sustain a 10-12 win performance level for 8-10 years. Hill, Kelce, Matthieu, etc. will be gone well before Mahomes.

One major difference is that the Chiefs have already won a title. Will be interesting to see if they can win again. We can thank the Pats for the Chiefs not having two titles already. They've been the best team in football back to back years.

$27mn over the cap for '21 assuming a $175mn cap. They literally can't field a roster under a $175mn cap next year without changes to the top 10, even with all min salary players. I assume they go with restructures vs. cuts, but if they need to cut someone, the real cap savings would be Mathieu ($19.7mn cap # - $4.9mn dead money = $14.6mn savings), Hill ($15.9mn - $5.3mn = $10.6mn), Fisher ($14.7mn - $3.2mn = $11.5mn), or Schwartz ($10.0mn - $3.8mn = $6.2mn).

And health, both to the top end guys and the rest of the roster. Those Colts teams sure had a horseshoe up their ass.

A practice field skirmish and subsequent suspension would seem to be a thin basis for the Ravens getting out of the contract. If this were his 3rd or 4th team suspension, then OK.

"Investigate these results"

"Confirm or rule out positive tests"

What does this mean?

They're positive. Stop trying to hide them, NFL.

Are you saying they are lying when they state they were determined to be false positives?

The Chicago Bears announced they received nine positive results from their Saturday test regimen. All nine were determined to be false positive results, meaning none were actual indications of infection. The Bears moved back their morning practice to Sunday afternoon "out of an abundance of caution" while they sorted through them.

Falsr positives are happening all across the country. My wife had a false positive and it cost her a week of work. Labs have consistently fucked up with these results.

False positives can happen, and with hundreds of thousands of tests a day, some are expected even with very high specificities.

This NFL thing seems different, they shouldn't be getting this many on one team without something very wrong with the lab they are using. Strange story, need more info.

Are you missing that there seems to be an issue with the specific lab?

Not everything is a conspiracy.

The NFL has lost the benefit of the doubt. They surely have the resources to locate quality testing services. Or maybe it was the way their statement was phrased.

Because he's cut it also doesn't impact draft pick compensation for the signing team as well.

It's perfect for the Pats for Baltimore to cut Thomas. He's still a really good player, and it's always good when one of your rivals loses a good player. It hurts Baltimore's cap. And as @kelpapa just pointed out, Baltimore doesn't get any draft pick compensation for this move.

Belichick with some deep scouting

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/patriots-sign-player-who-hasnt-played-football-in-five-years-bill-belichick-puts-him-at-a-new-position/
On Saturday afternoon, the Patriots announced that they had signed Paul Quessenberry, who hasn't played college or pro football for five years.

...

Quessenberry has been out of football pursuing a career as a marine. He played defensive end at Navy (his final college season was in 2014), but the Patriots are trying him out at tight end

Does that still leave dead cap money with Baltimore? Please...
They are believed to be going after his $10M guaranteed salary for this season.

https://ravenswire.usatoday.com/2020/08/23/ravens-officially-release-s-earl-thomas-for-conduct-detrimental-to-the-team/

The decision to release Thomas for detrimental conduct could allow Baltimore to file a grievance in a bid to recoup his $10 million guaranteed 2020 salary, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
I agree with @Harry Hooper that it doesn't seem like a strong case. No previous suspensions, not even any known fines. I'd guess Thomas and the NFLPA will aggressively fight this.
