Zach Lowe’s recent appearance on KOC and Vernon’s Mismatch pod was hilarious. Vernon called out a point from Lowe’s latest column for basically being directly opposing something KOC had said in a recent pod without naming KOC specifically, and they all had a good natured discussion about it ribbing each other over it.
Good call. Listening now and it is funny

“You should have called him Kevin O’Hater.”
“ESPN doesn’t let us have as much fun as at the Ringer, I don’t think I could have snuck that past the editors.”

Sleeping With the Enemy rewatchable was great, and I really like Van Lathan.

But it's funny how Simmons is obsessed with the versa climber, like this movie invented it, until Lebron somehow reinvented it when he was in Miami? In Rocky IV, Drago FAMOUSLY uses a versa climber when Rocky is climbing the mountain in the snow. It's a crucial scene. And Rocky IV is Simmons jam. I just don't get how he misses that.

Russillo I like when he's self-deprecating (or poking Simmons). I think lately I've been hearing less of that, so I've skipped most of them lately.

Right now the thing I appreciate most about Russillo is Macon Gunter (Chris Long's co-host) refusing to give him any credit for anything.

Edit: but he and Scott Van Pelt are amazing
Russillo's "Worst Year Ever" bit from 2019 was one of the funniest things that year. I was doubled over laughing at it.

The Coming To America episode of The Rewatchables with Bill, Van Lathan and Wesley Morris was a great listen. Once again, though a Simmons verbal quirk took away from it. He kept calling actor John Amos, John A-Mose, like it rhymed with John Stamos. Oddly enough, the top of John Amos's Wiki page has this:

Not to be confused with John Stamos.

Too late!

Van Lathan is awesome. He's so funny and always on point.(Wesly is also phenomenal, but he's more erudite and less humorous, whereas Lathan is just out loud hilarious) This was a very good two podcast run for Lathan on the Rewatchables.

I’m a huge Wesley Morris fanboy but he really benefits from Lathan’s humor when they are both on Rewatchables together.

The discussion of “slideys” was freaking hysterical and is a top 5 all time RW moment.

I unabashedly love the Binge Mode podcast.

But the constant giggling by Jason and Mallory is unbelievably grating. It's like a laugh track on a sitcom, but worse. It just keep interrupting the tremendous content, for no reason. And if everything is funny, nothing is.

With this week's wrapup of the Marvel season, Concepcion is done with the Ringer and Binge Mode, although it's possible that the pod might continue. I believe that the original plan was to rotate hosts in after the inital GOT run but Rubin and Concepcion were such a success that they stuck as the regular hosts.

It would be crazy to end the pod because Rubin is phenomenal but they will lose a lot with Jason. He's quite a talent. But maybe that will mean less giggling, which will be an auditory pleasure, at least. Ben Lindhbergh could probably slide in there pretty seamlessly.

I know Mal was alluding to it in the wrapup, but I'm a little surprised that she didn't explicitly address him leaving. If you didn't already know that this was his last Binge Mode, I don't think the ending sounded any different than when they wrapped up the Potter series (heck, likely less emotional).

One thing that continually cracked me up during the Marvel run was their running critique of the Natasha / Clint relationship, and how it was suspect and problematic with him being married. I actually get the feeling that they somehow weren't self-aware enough to see the pot-kettle-black irony in them throwing shade at that.

To be fair Tori A-Mose is how hers is pronounced. It’s a plausible thing.

I listened to The Doors episode of The Rewatchables a few days ago, and it was great. Brought back memories of seeing it in the theater with a bunch of my high school friends (most of whom were really high).

I watched it last night on HBO Max for the first time since I saw it originally... ooooof. Kilmer’s performance is remarkable, of course. But man, that movie is a total mess. I made it 90 minutes before I bailed out.

Not as rewatchable as I remembered.

So not technically Ringer related, but didn't think it deserved it's own thread:

Jason Concepcion and Jason Gallagher have a new show on Crooked called "ALL CAPS NBA", and it is just the great NBA Desktop under a new name.

Thanks for the heads up: It appears the main course is "Takeline" which will be a discussion podcast where Concepcion is paired with Renee Montgomery. She was a favorite player of my wife while with the Connecticut Sun, and was a fun hang at the season ticket holder events from her recollection.

Thanks. I’ve been tempted to fire it up but now I won’t. The Ringer episode was fun. Klosterman is nails with the timing and background of 80s and 90s Doors fandom, and often just lets Simmons have his moment even though he disagrees with the (usually not particularly important) point Simmons is trying to make. Like I’m sure CK could have gone 10 minutes about why “classic rock” hadn’t really become a thing yet in the early 80s, but just backed off.

I had never really considered that the movie was, in the aggregate, bad for the Doors legacy because I was in middle school when it came out and distinctly remember Break on Through being played at a few school dances next to Belinda Carlisle and Extreme, and people liking it. But it makes sense; it depicts Morrison as a fucking insufferable asshole.

So good. And just a few minutes after asking Simmons if he just learned the term beta. I am going to miss Concepcion a ton, but Chris Ryan never disappoints.

How is Wesley Morris so patient with him?

I just listened to the Oscars preview, and about fifteen minutes into his segment with Wesley out of nowhere we dive into Bill whining about how there is blowback to criticizing certain movies that have socio-cultural significance through their representation of minorities. Bill: ‘There are probably people out there who are afraid to be critical of movies the way they used to be...they are afraid to be critical because if you are critical then you’re a fucking asshole.’

Wesley didn’t answer the point directly except to counter Bill’s point that movies having ardent, vocal defenders is new. His elegant evasion of Bill’s point surprised me because Bill was clearly trying to suggest that certain movies weren’t as good as their hype and horrible things would happen if Bill criticized them because of the movies’ social significance. Evidence? None. Wesley then broached ‘Trial of the Chicago 7’ as a pivot, at which point Bill dragged the convo to ‘Judas and the Black Messiah.’ Maybe Wesley knows debating Bill is pointless? Doesn’t want the convo to get hairy? Both?

Bill didn’t like it, as he explained, which is fine. Hell, Wesley didn’t seem to love it, though unsurprisingly his take was much more engaging and included observations that frankly didn’t occur to me. But Bill’s whining about persecution that doesn’t exist tinged with an undercurrent of resentment is insufferable. Something tells me precisely nothing bad will happen to Bill because he expressed that opinion.

Just want to shout out my appreciation of J. Kyle Mann. He's been an excellent addition to their NBA team and brings some interesting perspectives. Listening to him and Tjarks talk prospects is about as nerdy/in the weeds as you can get and it's awesome.

So, with no new episodes since last November, I guess it's safe to assume that the MLB Show podcast is dead? I enjoy the Baseball BBQ podcast, but I still preferred the MLB Show.

Being patient with him helps pay the bills and expand your audience. And Bill clearly doesn't like being contradicted too much so if you want the name recognition Bill can almost uniquely provide you need to play nice.
I'm not sure Wesley Morris needs, or particularly benefits, from whatever name recognition Bill can provide at this point. But it is pretty weird for Wesley to be silent on these points, given his podcast is specifically dedicated to proccessing these issues!

The MLB show appears to have been taken over by R2C2.

Ben Lindbergh had a great video game podcast(with Concepcion, who is gone now) and the MLB show was great, too, and both were wiped out.

Right on cue, today I see that the Ringer MLB Show has a podcast trailer for what is soon to be called "Ringer Baseball" - and become a Spotify exclusive. So there you go.

Yeah, it just popped up in my podcast app, and I was happy to have it back, until they noted that it would become a Spotify exclusive in a few weeks (as will the Baseball BBQ podcast), which probably means that I won’t be listening to either much anymore.

Spotify is free for this right? It isn’t my preferred app but I listened to the Klosterman/Ryan Music Exists without a paid account.

My take is Wesley is too nice a guy and too good a friend to really get into it with Bill, who often is out of his depth when he talks about films or social issues.

Yes, they said at the end of the episode that dropped yesterday that it will be free on Spotify. I just find it too much of a hassle to keep track of and listen to podcasts in multiple apps.

It really isn't that difficult. Open Spotify, search Ringer MLB, download the podcast and listen to it.

When you're done, go back to Pocketcasts (or whatever you use) and you're good to go.

Kyle Brandt's podcast is only on Spotify. And it's phenomenal, so I listen to it through Spotify even tho that isn't my preferred choice. It is never a burden.

For me, the problem isn’t knowing how, it’s keeping track of when a new episode’s available and remembering to listen. With no commute, I already subscribe to more podcasts than I can listen to, and having podcasts that aren’t in my regular feed makes it far more likely that those are the ones I’ll skip.

I get it, my queue is always jammed too.

But for something I really like, like Kyle's podcast, I will always search it out. But if it's a middling podcast that you're partially interested in, it might not be worth it. 10 Questions, however, is worth searching out.

Let me say this. Spotify is getting into the podcast game with everything they've got. It is a humongous aspect of their entire business. And their podcast app is legitimately horrible. To be frank, it fucking sucks. I don't understand how they can get it so wrong, when it's so important to them. Even the sound sucks. Like, the actual audio fidelity is worse on Spotify than on pocketcasts. Setting a queue is also a chore on Spotify. And the auto play always gets it wrong if you don't set a queue. And it sometimes doesn't even track podcasts you have listened to. There is nothing good about their app.

So all of this to say, I understand why you won't bother to chase down podcasts on Spotify.

This was really funny by Rodger Sherman, even guys who don't follow the Celtics closely notice the ridiculous amount of guys the Celtics are rumored as in on: https://www.theringer.com/nba/2021/4/6/22369749/danny-ainge-celtics-almost-trades-history

Although he alludes to the fact that Danny himself is responsible for all the leaks of "almost" getting superstar X, I'd like a detailed study of whom in the C's front office has been getting an unusual amount of promotions over the years and zero in on a few candidates of the star leaker. That would be some hard-hitting journalism.
