Can't link it but Mike Tanier is saying that the pats are making the kind of moves that they chuckle at other teams for making--which honestly I don't get. Smith is being paid in the ballpark of a top TE, but he's 25 and very good. Goodcheaux is likewise making reasonable money but is again getting paid roughly market for a solid DT and, again, is in his prime.
I think the idea is that the Patriots traditionally sign for value. Smith may be worth his contract, but you're definitely paying at least market, and Godchaux feels like a straight up overpay, that's a lot of money for a mediocre non-pass rusher.

Oh, yes please although it would give me major Adalius flashbacks. Although he was 30 when signed vs. 28 for Judon.
Those two years are a big difference.

The Adalius problems seemed more about fitting into the program than about football performance.

I get that I just think I'm reading the markets differently, I think both contracts are slightly rich but not substantial overpays.

I was curious too, so I checked in.

"Look at who they do deals with! Only Bill's buddies! Mayock in LV, Casserio in Houston and Drew Rosenhaus!"

This is why I haven't listened to them in months.

Click.
and don't you feel better for not listening to them?

When people openly tell you they are trolls, and their MO is to just shift their argument based on what gets the people riled up. Why bother listening unless you get off on being made fun of? (not to kink shame)

I get it, but I think the point of the tweet was that the Patriots traditionally don't want to pay top of the market, and especially overpays on non-elite guys. Smith feels like a slight overpay, but at least it makes sense given his age and potential, the Godchaux deal I don't get at all, it's quite high for what guys like that usually get, and jumping on it day 1 is unlike the Patriots. Now it probably means Bill thinks he sees something there that makes Godchaux likely to be significantly better than he's shown, but.... it's definitely not a value signing.

Over the past four seasons, Matt Judon has 91 combined sacks and QB hits. That ranks 5th overall among edge guys.

Get 'em in here, Bill.

I think it's important to note (not that you are ignoring it, mind you) that in the past the Pats simply didn't have the cap space to pay top of market *and still retain a large amount of cap space to fill in elsewhere.*

Yeah, Adalius was clearly a headcase but still showed solid physical talent. Adding Judon and High to the young'ns would make me quite pleased.

Exactly what they needed - first a run-swallowing DT, then an edge rusher. They can add some speed at LB in the draft.

Now I wonder what the plan is for WR.

I like Judon but not at the expense of a WR. WR is one position I don't want this team relying on the draft to fill
I think the market for WRs is going to be soft. That's one position that they might want to wait out a bit given the strong WR draft class.

I’d like to see the Patriots trade Harry for Andy Isabella and see what they can get from him. Two disappointing receivers but the Pats may able to get more out of Isabella. It’s be brought on the midday show on 98.5.

As much as I would love Golladay or Samuel, I have to agree. There is a lot of quality out there that is not too far off with respect to talent/production/potential. I am fine spending on elite talent like Jonnu and Judon and getting quantity in the WR market on the relative cheap (Tate, Westbrook, Watkins, Sanders, Humphries, Brown, Cole, etc.).

The Bears created $23m in cap space with 3 restructured deals announced this morning - Khalil Mack, Eddie Jackson, & Cody Whitehair. Mack's 2021 number drops from just over $26m to just over $13m...while upping his 2022 hit to $30.3m.

If Pace & Nagy don't survive this season, they are leaving some nasty work for the next guys. And if they do make it to 2022...then they're gonna have to clean up their own mess.

How much spending money do we have left??
Depends how backloaded these deals are. Based on AAV, I still think they have $15-20M left but it's a complete blind dart-throw guess until we get the specifics on some of these contracts.

I get the desire for a WR, but.... if you can't find one of the top couple at a price you like (Davis, Golladay, Samuel, Fuller), this year's FA class is sneaky deep, Juju, John Brown, Hilton, Jones, Sanders, Cole, Perriman, Higgins, Moore, Fitz, Green, Stills, there is a going to be a bargain or two in that group that wants to get the snaps that coming to an empty room like NE brings. Not to mention trade options.

Yeah--strictly on AAV we have:

Smith: 12.5
Mills: 6
Godchaux: 8
Judon: 16 (first 2 years)

That's $42.5M. Per Miguel we started with $65M in space.

Per Miguel:

3/15 3:21PM EDT update - My Patriots salary cap space number after the Marcus Cannon trade is $65,250,990. While it does account for Cam Newton, it does not account for Trent Brown, Justin Bethel, Davon Godchaux, Matt Judon, Jalen Mills or Jonnu Smith.

I feel bad for all the kids born in the last 20 minutes who have never seen the Pats sign a free agent.

TE and all 3 levels of the defense got upgraded today. Not surprised that Belichick went big on upgrading the D; there were some serious holes in the defense that showed at times, and just getting Hightower and Chung back was not going to be nearly enough to patch them.

Getting a couple of mid-range guys at WR makes a lot of sense.

I know it's a splurge of spending but outside of QB (which would be quite prohibitive to fix in one fell swoop) some of the biggest issues last year were lack of a pass rush, some bleeding in the run defense game, and very little help at TE. That's addressing needs pretty darn well.

A WR would be really nice (I am full in on Meyers and Gunner showed some life but that can obviously be improved on), but this is a good way to spend money for sure.

Isn't this a super-strong draft for WRs, and super-weak for DT, Edge, and TE (Pitts notwithstanding)? Trying to remember where I heard a draft analyst say that teams are going to get starting WRs in the 5th round this year.

We are not good at drafting WRs. I dont have any faith that we will have a true WR1 on this roster if we bank on the draft

EDIT- Re that Howe post, I feel better

I believe that the Steelers have figured out something about drafting WRs. For everyone else it's a dart throw, and the Patriots' failings are just small sample size.
