This seems to emerging as a consensus of sorts. That worries me since Belichick almost never does the expected.
Maybe he’ll move up for Lance or Jones instead.

I don’t actually really understand the widespread belief in the media that Fields is the QB the Patriots covet. It’s easy to see why they would want a QB in general. But I haven’t seen any reason to truly believe that it’s Fields they most like out of those three.

They can cut Lock for almost nothing--his dead cap hit is like $1.5M.
They aren't going to cut Lock. He's Elway's guy. Trading for a vet for competition is what the organization seemed to indicate they were going to do all along.

Maybe BB can trade himself to the Jets for the #2 pick, resign Friday to become the Pats GM/DC and promote McDaniels to HC of the NEP

I have been trying all week to not let myself get too excited about the possibilities for tonight. But I want Fields or Lance. I need Fields or Lance. While there are other long-term needs this team has as well on both sides of the ball, no position shapes the fortunes of a franchise more than the starting quarterback of an NFL team. It’s time.

I dont understand the handwringing about potentially overpaying to move up. If the Patriots like a QB enough to move up, you pay what is needed and draft the QB with a smile on your face.

Getting a franchise QB on a rookie contract is priceless. Like, I'd trade every single draft pick for the next four years if I was guaranteed one. Since theres no guarantees, obviously you dont do that.

But, if BB and McDaniels like one of those kids enough to trade up because they have franchise QB potential and they think they can build around him? Yes. Two firsts and two seconds. Fine. In a cocaine heartbeat.

Mac Jones is almost certainly going to SF. Everything they've said indicates he's their guy. Fields makes more sense than Lance based on his experience and larger sample size. He was a five star recruit coming out of high school who has faced elite competition, whereas Lance was a complete unknown who faced mediocre competition. Now maybe they like Lance better, but the speculation around Fields makes sense . Of course, we are all just guessing, so in a way, you are right.

I like Kyed, but with his draft morning article, he thinks a Pats trade-up for QB is more likely to happen if Mac Jones falls. I really disagree with that.

https://nesn.com/2021/04/patriots-mailbag-why-trading-for-qb-during-nfl-draft-seems-inevitable/amp/#click=https://t.co/mUV7RYcjTk
I didn’t read that the same way. He didn’t say more likely. He said he could see them trading up a couple spots for Jones if Fields/Lance gone. Which I don’t necessarily disagree with. I wouldn’t be stunned at a trade up to say 13 to get him if he’s the last QB left (this all assumes BB likes him).

@MikeM2275
Do you think the Pats feel strongly enough about a Q4 to move up into the top 10? It’s a big risk with high cost when they can probably get a known quantity and Jimmy G and draft another stud player at a more predictable position. This is a BB legacy draft, doesn’t want to miss.

I think it all depends on the player. Like I said before, I doubt the Patriots would be willing to trade up into the top 10 for all five top quarterbacks.
One scenario that currently looks unlikely: What if the 49ers actually take Lance or Fields? I think the Patriots would be willing to move up a few spots for Jones.

Between here and everywhere.
I have literally no idea what to expect tonight. Over 20 years of BB has conditioned me to know I have no clue to build a team, and thusly I never assume what I think they should do is correct.

Literally everyone in the world thinks we need to draft our next franchise QB. Which, if history is any guide, means BB is going for a Strong Safety from Amherst College, after trading this years 1st for 2 4ths, 2 2022 1sts, and a punter.

The Patriots need a QB. We all want them to draft a QB. They have the resources to ensure they get a good QB. Why am I so scared the Patriots walk away tonight with Cam and Stidham and shit else?

No doubt. Some Pat's fans think he is the savior in waiting but there is a reason SF spent a HUGE amount to replace him.
And maybe the reason BB was willing to let him go was related, at least in part, to the actual playing of football, rather than being the product of a soap opera script.

Got it. Yeah I disagree with him that a trade up for a QB is “more likely” if Jones falls. Feels like that opposite to me.
Unless it's semantics in that if Fields falls MORE teams would want to move up for him so it makes the Pats less likely to get him as opposed to Jones falling and not many teams wanting to move up.

That writing makes it seem like Mac is their top guy and I don't *think* that's the case.

This was the exact scenario that happened to WFT a couple of years ago. Pre-draft talk that Haskins was their guy, talk they were going to move up to get him, draft happens and no trades, Haskins falls to #15 amd WFT is celebrated as smartly having waited out the market and gotten their guy.

And then the world saw Dwayne Haskins play QB in the NFL. Let’s hope this ends the same but differently?

Benjamin Allbright goes with Fields at 8 in a trade with Carolina

I've no idea how the Bengals are set for draft capital, but they do have a franchise QB in place that they should want to build around. Might they be willing to take something similar to what BB might be would offer Carolina? With all of the FA signings might there be an expendable piece that could be offered in addition to picks? The reason I ask about Cincinnati is because I don't trust Miami at 6.

Thank God draft day is here. And I swear I'm making a list of names who are advocating for trading for JG. Some people are winners and some are losers, and he's a loser.

The pick at the end means nothing, but that first sequence was really rough. Super poor decision making and then completely airmails an open Sanders. Not an easy position to be in of course, but I don't think Jimmy would enjoy watching that video.

I think the consensus is that the Bengals are too cheap to have purchased the Jimmy Johnson trade value chart.

My god I'm so excited for tonight--even aside from the Pats. So many teams with huge possibilities. I'm dying for the Pats to get Fields, but I'm going in with the expectation it's not going to happen, and then I'll cackle with glee if it does.

As for BB's play here, he's gamed this out and has a price in mind for a trade for each guy at each slot ahead of 15. In other words, he's likely willing to give up Pick X and Y for Mac, and if Mac is on the board at 5, he'll offer it to Cincy (lol, but bear with me), if Mac's there at 6 he'll offer it to Miami, if Mac's there at 7 he'll offer it to Detroit, etc. If Mac goes to SF at 3, then he'll have a price in mind for whoever he ranks next, and so on and so forth.

At the same time, he's not going to deviate from his value judgments and if some player he really likes (e.g. Surtain, Parsons, Paye, etc.) starts falling, he's going to consider that in the equation and weigh getting Surtain at 15 (or possibly even lower) versus paying some cost to draft a QB.

TL;DR: I trust that BB has a grade and trade value in mind for his top targets and will react accordingly. Shocking insight, I know.

I don't see Cinci trading down, simply because there are two options for them that will likely be there at 5 who would be excellent value and excellent fits: Chase (what Burrows might want) and Sewell (what Burrows certainly needs).

I just want to see Carolina draft a QB and for both that QB and Sam Darnold to turn out to be better than Zach Wilson.

Right.

I am pretty sure BB has the benefit of my doubt on anything, including picking a QB. If it costs you three #1s and you hit it you win games and for all you know save yourself maybe 5 or 6 #1's down the road,. If they have a guy go get the guy.

In the last half hour, there's been a lot of line movement towards Lance going #3. I'm not sure why.
Because people are bored and filling the time with talk. Talking about Jones going #3 is chalk, it's boring. So they talk about other things.

I can't wait until the Pats trade up to a spot where two of the hyped-up QBs are still available, and take a CB. Just want to read the reactions here with a cold beer.

You just wanna watch the world burn.

Anywho, if they don’t get a real shot at a QB they love, sign me up for Surtain or Horn. I think both are gone by their pick, so they’d have to move up anyways, and probably enough to outflank a team like Philly.

I'd love to see them move up for Surtain in particular.

Possibly since the Niners have been blowing smoke since they made the trade. I have never seen Jones as the fit for Shanahan but Lance would slide in nicely

Imagine if the Patriots got Rodgers and proceeded to go 19-0 (edit - 20-0!). BB's counter to Brady winning the year prior on his own...
