The deadline they were put on themselves was free agency. Chiarelli's master plan was to move Seguin so they could re-sign Horton. Horton told them he wasn't signing and then they made the decision Seguin still had to go. They cleared like $2.3 off the cap and used it to sign Iginla.
All because Seguin liked to drink some beer and meet up with some ladies, right? That used to be mandatory behavior.

Also, since it'll come up, I believe Chiarelli was on the phone with either NYR or Ottawa in that stupid segment. They were the only teams without a first round pick headed into draft day that year. Anaheim too but they traded theirs for Kesler on draft day. Could've been them too, it's unclear on exactly when that phone call happened.

I still can't believe the Bruins made a fucking video out of that disaster.

I disagree with the trade wholeheartedly but Seguin cost them a Cup that year. An all time postseason flop from a supposed “superstar”. The fact that this goes unacknowledged blows my mind. 1G in 22 games.

For the Bergeron perspective, I'd point out Sinden, for all of his later faults, had the guts to trade Esposito, and (akin to potential Bergeron trade), an aging Hodge for Ricky Middleton.

Fiddling around the third liners is not going to do it. You need to guess right on a high draft pick from 2019 and gain about a decade in service. It may be that Bergeron has the best value at the trade deadline, when Hall fetches a #2, where you swap Bergeron for an undervalued recent first round pick of a team going for it all.

It sucks, as the fans here have said, but it's got to be done.

edit: But as everyone has noted, having the guts to make a move is one thing. Having brains is quite another, as Donnie showed in 2015.
Are you assuming they are out of playoff contention? Because there is seemingly no way in hell they are trading their captain for a lottery ticket and punting on making the playoffs. If Rask, Krejci, and Hall all sign elsewhere and they don’t spend anything on FA replacements being well out of contention is a possibility. Otherwise, you can expect them to be in the thick of it.

if you want a tear down and rebuild look at Detroit to see how well that can go.

Wow. This thread.

I leave you all alone because I think you're all grown up, but then I come home and you've taken the liquor from the liquor cabinet and puked on your mother's favorite oriental rug.

Trade Bergeron? Trade Pasta? Wtf am I reading here. This is after I waded into the cesspool that is the Rask thread (the most successful goalie in Bruins history deserves better).

Isn't what happened exactly what we kind of expected to happen? They didn't have the depth when it mattered and the sugarcoating Hall trade ran out of magic. They got healthy, played well, then came up short.

The answer isn't too trade your captain and superstar forward. They have plenty of cap space to add stuff around these guys. Continue to build around Pasta, Marchand, and McAvoy.

Whether Sweeney is the right guy to do it is a totally legit question though.

Aside from the front office discussion up thread about Seguin. Before the trade. I remember there was chatter about Seguin and another player's wife or girlfriend. The leadership group in the dressing room was none too pleased. That group relayed their concerns to the front office.

Friend of a friend told me Horton paid Seguin to be the bull, then the NHLPA stepped in since that was cap circumvention.

Pretty good source but take it with a grain of salt!

Rumor at the time was that Seguin was shagging Horton's wife. One of the reasons Horton went to Columbus was to get away from being the athlete center of attention, from more rumors.

Interestingly, on the night that Peverly had his cardiac incident in Dallas, Horton was there with Columbus (and Thomas was in net for Dallas). As they were attending to Peverly Horton came over to Seguin to get the news on what was going on. That must've been awkward.

Fun fact- Horton got credited for a goal in a game he never really played in. He scored early in the Peverley game and it was 1-0 Jackets when the incident happened. When they made the game up, the NHL being the NHL, decided to play a full 60 minutes with the Jackets starting off with a 1-0 lead. Horton was injured by then and unable to play. So he scored a goal in a game he didn't play in.

Also the Seguin/Horton's wife thing is what I had heard through the grape vine as well.

Does Bergeron still live in Quebec?

Espo hadn’t played his whole career in Boston. And he didn’t have a NMC.

Jarome Iginla, an Alberta native, captain of the team, and 16 year vet:
Iginla's 16-year career in Calgary ended when he was sent to the Penguins in exchange for Pittsburgh's first round selection at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and college prospects Kenny Agostino and Ben Hanowski
Ray Bourque, also sought a trade to a contender and was traded for a 1st rounder.

Espo hadn't spent his whole career in Boston, but won 2 Stanley Cups for them and set NHL records in goals and was revered here: "Jesus saves, but Esposito puts in the rebound."

It's the sort of trade you need to make when you are in a rebuild.

As I noted, Bergeron has a 3 team list, and if you go to him, and let him choose (and possibly expand the list), he could be the sort of piece a leadershipless team like Toronto might over pay for to get his intangibles.

If Bergeron wanted out (like Iginla did). Then sure, that’s getting some value back. Unless Bergeron asks out, if they traded him for a late 1st and two guys destined for the AHL I would want management replaced immediately.

Calgary got shit in return (1st 28 overall, Morgan Klimchuk, Kenny Agostino, Ben Hanowski). A Bergeron trade isn't going to be trans formative for the organization,. They'll probably get a few lottery tickets at best.

I mean, the current Bruins aren't comparable to the 2013 Flames or the Bruins team that traded Ray. Those were disasters with no light at the end of the tunnel. Both players asked out. I get the Bruins long-term prognosis doesn't look good, but they're still a good team in the short term. If the bottom falls out next year they can have this conversation at the deadline.

Decent chance that in whatever years he has remaining, Bergeron still provides more value to the Bruins than whatever combination of pieces you could get in return. Especially if you are of the opinion that Sweeney is generally a shit drafter. If there is a KG/Pierce to the Nets trade on the table then sure, you think about it.

Ray Bourque wanted a chance to have his name on the Cup. They were years away from contention and almost no chance they'd be competitive by the time he was going to be retired. They got a 1st from a team at the deadline that was on the cusp and needed someone like Bourque to push them over the top. They could certainly get a very low 1st round pick for Bergy at the deadline, but again that means the Bruins are well out of contention for a spot. Bergeron has a Cup and the Bruins are competitive. He isn't likely to go to management and ask out like Bourque did. They need to make some changes, but it is nowhere near as dire a situation as what Bourque was facing. Same with Iginla.

Wow. At least other posters responded by expressing their preference for holding on to him, even if that would not foster the rebuild. Sorry to offend your sensibilities by discussing options for the offseason, such as whether a 35 year old will be valuable during a rebuild. To keep it a safe space for you, I'll stick to mainstream non-challenging questions, like replacing Karson Kuhlmann.

What fourth liner do you think we should get in place of Kuhlman? (sorry to suggest Boston's future might be better to move on from Karson also).

Neither Bourque nor Iginla had won a Cup. They asked out specifically for that chance.

Is there any indication that Bergeron is asking out like that?

Edit: Never mind. We can just stop. :)

I'm not sure I get what they're doing with it honestly. We've had G7 and the locker room/flight celebration. I assume ep 2 will be the parade. Then what? More of following the players around to their home days? I was expecting more in depth on the actual playoffs kind of like:
Ep 1: season wrap up and round 1
Ep 2: round 2 and 3
Ep 3: round 4
Ep 4: celebration/parade/cup days/etc

Currently in the middle of a kitchen renovation of sorts. Stressful times in the cshea household.
I pray yours goes smoother than mine did a few years ago. Our contractor was a crook and the work took forever while we had a toddler to manage/feed.

I need a new washing machine. Home ownership is fun.
I had the great enjoyment of replacing both my boiler and hot water heater at the same time a couple months ago. That was... expensive.

Hot water heater is in good shape but dates to 2006, roof around 2003, paint not sure but it ain't new. Windows are original (roughly 80 years), kitchen floors are many decades old as well.

Fun stuff. At least my dad the tile guy came down to NJ and updated our first floor/laundry room on the house. Unfortunately the rest is not in his wheelhouse. In-laws have lived in the area since the 70s but all of "their guys" seem to be retiring or dying at a rapid pace, so we are losing some of our ins on some potential deals.

Edit: Overall I can't complain. Moved in September 2019, a few short months before we would have had to pay at least 20% more with a lot more competition. And private outside space has been a lifesaver. But it's an older house, so all the arguments about it being an investment feel slightly flimsy to me, like there is a very strong chance the next person who buys this house will do so in order to knock it down to turn our 2500 sq ft into like 4000 sq ft with no yard, a style that seems to be increasingly popular in the area. But ultimately a lot of our future comfort rests with my in-laws, who will ceaselessly (well, father in law at least) brag about how much his daughters are going to inherit thanks to their frugal living without actually saying the number.

That sucks. I've been essentially without a kitchen since last Friday and am pulling my hair out. I can't imagine doing so with a toddler around.

Work started for us last Friday and is on track. Cabinets should be going in tomorrow. GCing myself. We're just doing new floors, cabinets/counter, appliances and lighting. Same footprint, same layout, not knocking down walls or anything though the plumbers had to cut a chunk of dry wall out to fix the sink vent. If that's the worst speed bump than it's a major success.

Coordinating the plumbers. electricians, carpenters and appliance delivery has been the real headache. I'm an idiot so trying to make sure everything is done in the correct order has been a major source of anxiety.

Currently in the middle of a kitchen renovation of sorts. Stressful times in the cshea household.
I closed on my house on 12/1. Had to rip out the carpets in all bedrooms and hallway and rip out the bathroom upstairs. My father in law and I did it ourselves. Had a kid on 1/10. Then we redid the bathroom, installed hardwood floors, and painted the whole inside of the house. Ripped out the downstairs bathroom before we moved in late April and still methodically working on that. Had to get a new washer and dryer. Then, we find that our hot water had rust in it so we needed a new hot water heater. In the process of ripping out the downstairs bathroom, we found that there is an 80 year old radiator behind the wall that we didn’t want. Asked a plumber to come price it out and they wanted $1800 to rip it out and install 3 foot of baseboard. That’s insane so we did it ourselves. Also dug out and installed a 20x24 brick patio with the help of my dad, BIL, and FIL.

We’ve had a hell of a last few months.

My gf completely redid our kitchen and bathrooms herself. All we had done otherwise was having appliances and the countertop/backsplash delivered and installed. She repainted cabinets, installed soft close hardware, installed floors and vanities in the bathrooms, repainted the walls, installed new toilets. It took a while but was insanely cheaper and way less stressful. I’ll never forget having a bunch of buddies over to do the tee time draft for our annual Ryder cup and she comes down in safety goggles and work boots trying to get the toilet installed and they all look at me like “what the hell is going on”.

She’s literally the best.

That's awesome. I wish I was somewhat handy. My dad is pretty good and helps with what he can. Those genes didn't land with me. I'm getting a little better but am mostly clueless until someone shows me and I do it once or twice. I've done a few toilets on my own/with a buddy so I consider myself a pro at toilet installation. I did our old dishwasher a few years ago and while I nearly burned the house down, I learned that lesson and am now a pro at dishwasher installations. That's about where the list ends. I think we're going to try to do the back splash for the new kitchen on our own but I'm hemming and hawing. We've gotten this far with the pro's doing the work, why not just have someone finish it off for me. Last thing I want is a brand new kitchen with a fucked up DIY back splash.

One thing I do regret with this project is not demoing the cabinets and counter in the kitchen myself. That was really fucking easy for the guy to do and he did it in less than an hour. I'm not sure what the itemized price was for the demo, but surely could've saved a decent chunk of money there. Only cost would've been trash removal We were afraid we'd knock something out incorrectly or damage an electrical/plumbing line inadvertently and just end up delaying everything and paying for repairs. Oh well.

I wanted to replace the oven/stove and countertop/backsplash of my Revere condo that I'm renting out and have had the property management company look into it but both people they had in said I'd have to replace all the cabinets too. Pfft. Not on a rental unit, thanks.

Also been trying to get an electrician and someone to do some window sash repair in our condo and can't get anyone to return a phone call. I'm encouraging The Nephew to think about going into the trades because there must just be a shit ton of demand out there if our smallish jobs aren't even worth a call back.
