I'll always wonder how things would have turned out had Hayward not suffered a catastrophic injury five minutes into his Celtic debut.
Not quite Bias level “what if” but definitely up there. Horford, Kyrie, Hayward with the Jay’s being brought on a little slower. Could have been an absolute force…until Kyrie ruined everything, of course.
And it's fair to wonder if Kyrie would have Kyrie'd in the same fashion had Hayward not gotten injured.

Ainge did good work here. The last couple of years were more of a reflection of how difficult it really is to build a championship team in the NBA than a reflection on Ainge's abilities.

And the other "what if's" to go along:

- Lakers add 9 wins to their 2017 win total to cause the Celtics pick from the 76'ers to roll over. Luka? Trae Young? No big deal, it's the Kings pick next year.....

- The 2019 Sacramento Kings win the most games they've won in 13 (!) years, and the most since. Ja Morant is perhaps asking for a bit much, but Tyler Herro perhaps? Good thing we have Memphis....

- And, of course, thanks to Morant, the Grizzlies manage to improve to have their pick fall to the ass end of the lottery. So far, that draft looks horrid after the top end, but is Halliburton perhaps better fit than Nesmith? A reach, but LeMelo would have been a nice add.

Luck cuts both ways for a GM.

Lots of bad luck but Halliburton is really good. He would immediately be the Celts third best player. I was praying he would fall. That one hurts.

Gobert finally gets to play for Ainge. Another “wonder how things would have turned out” moment. I hope every tine Rudy walks past him in the hallway he mumbles “Olynyk” just loud enough for Danny to hear him.

Every single NBA GM has their Olynyk's, except for those that are about to have their Olynyk's.

also.. Kelly Olynyk is still in the league, there's a good case he was one of the 5-6 best players to come out of that draft. A lot of people missed far worse in that draft than Ainge.

The what-if I’ll always wrestle with is the KG injury in Utah. That team started 27-2 and was on another level from the 2008 champs.

That's a bad one for sure, but I don't think that anything will trump Bias. That kid was about to step into the short rotation of the defending champs just as Bird and McHale were starting the back 9. 1987 was a no-brainer and probably 1988 too. The dynasty would have rolled on. Instead, the door basically slammed shut after a finals loss to the Lakers in 1987 and stayed that way for 20 years.

Yeah I meant in recent times. Nothing will match Bias. That wipes out the Pistons titles, and makes a Bias/Jordan eastern conference battle throughout the 90s.

If we are going to talk about what-ifs there is no bigger one imo than Perkins knee injury in G6 vs the Lakers. I still have nightmares of Pau, Bynum and Lamar reaching over Sheed and Big Baby for offensive rebound after offensive rebound like a high school senior would be doing against a 7th grader.

The 2010 Finals. That was brutal.

Donnie was my best player when I coached him in Middle School. A GREAT kid as well. He threw the ball hard, had a good deuce, and would have been a solid minor league player. He couldn't hit a curve (like most of us). Loves baseball over basketball BTW.

CT right? seems like a great kid. Always having fun on the court

The leap he took from Louisville to the Pros has been very impressive

Yeah, Olynyk was a solid single up the middle. Giannis or Gobert would have been better of course, but pretty much every single one of the other 45 guys picked after him would have been worse. Can’t expect a home run every time.
