Phil's tee shot on 12 was epically bad. In the woods to the right. He had to hit a provisional.

edit: he found his first shot.

I'd go tomorrow to see if I can scrounge a ticket affordably, just to see Lefty, but weather looks horrible.

I guess I can root for Celtic Shane, Rory, Cam, and Rahm and try for Sat or Sun

I think I found/confirmed a really good viewing spot, which I believe someone already mentioned. GS behind 15th green. If you pick the smaller one GS, and sit on the rail on the 17th side, you can see 15th approaches and putting, 16 tee shot and green, 17th approach/green, and 18th green.

Is that the one they mentioned in the NLU video? that did look nice.

Just got back. Perhaps the most enjoyable sporting event I have ever been to. I had an easy bike ride up there, short walk into venue, no lines anywhere, plenty of places to watch on the ropes and tons of open grandstand seating. I generally hopped around. After a while I figured out you could leave and re-enter super easy and I picked up my 7yo son from school and brought him back up. We just walked right back in (kids are totally free) and he had a grand old time. Tommy Fleetwood gave him a thumbs up after he gave him a good-shot cheer. Oh, and the golf course is incredible, right in the middle of the city. So cool!

I had a similar experience, sans reentry with son. Earlier this week it dawned me (sorry, I'm slow) that having a major golf championship within walking distance of my home is a once-in-a-lifetime experience if you live around here. I was monitoring Stubhub all week and pulled the trigger late Wednesday when the price dropped to $350 with fees. I hiked the two miles up Pond Street from JP this morning and had a great time. Immediately upon entering, Rory and his group were right in front of me on 18 (9 for them) so I followed them for a while. I suspect that group had the biggest gallery of the day (it included Xander and Matsuzaka) and it was hard to stick with them. I started moving ahead to get in front of the crowd and found a great spot along the 9th where you got good views of approach shots and the green. I saw Rory's closing boogie there and it was a big let down for the crowd. In the afternoon I tried to spend more time on the back 9. The stretch from 10 through 14 is astonishing and I wished I had spent more time there. The porch along 14 that is part of the Trophy Club is open to all and is a great place to stand. But overall the course is incredible and the event was really well planned and managed. No lines to enter or for restrooms, food, beer or anything. I'd love to go another day, but can't justify the cost and I'm more excited about watching the rest of TV after seeing the course in person.

Had a great day with my wife, son and Bro in law. Just a stunningly interesting layout. Lived up to its billing, especially the Himilayas, the short 11th, 14, the 17th green and the like. Didn’t realize how uphill Leonard’s putt was until I saw the green in person. Loved the fescue, the elevation changes, shot values, and how each hole featured something different that made it special or created the most difficulty. And the fact my golfing son got to see these guys in action on a wonderfully difficult course.

The GS spot I mentioned above on 15 was great (not sure if it was mentioned on NLU). My wife had a terrible time with her allergies, despite taking her typical meds for it, so sitting there for about an hour and a half in the afternoon was a nice respite. And some really good friends from college happened to pop in there about halfway through, and we had a nice time catching up. Caught Caleb Manuel from ME/UCOnn, who was having a tough day, but also all the good afternoon groups that started on the back 9. Also almost got hit by Cantlay’s drive on 17, which did hit another spectator.

Near perfect weather (70s, overcast/sunny), crowds not too big, so easy to get concessions and a decent spot to view any hole. Trophy Club was a plus, had the obligatory Julius, and able to get wife away from whatever fired up her allergies. The merch tent at 14 wasn’t too crowded, although the main one near 18 was much better stocked.

Just a lovely day.

The No Laying Up guys interviewed Brandon Matthews on their pod last night. I'd honestly never heard of Matthews, but I gather he hits the ball a long way, because he said on the 14th yesterday - which is 619 yards long, and the second shot basically goes up a cliff - he hit driver/5-iron into the green. That makes me want to curl up into a fetal position and cry. (And on the 8th, which is 557 yards long and goes markedly uphill at the end as well, he hit driver/wedge.)

Regarding Rory, it's amazing how the guy with the most charisma on the PGA Tour is so different to Tiger - the previous holder of that belt - in so many ways. He's such a headcase in the most wonderful and infuriating ways, he's so unguarded in speaking with the media, and he seems like he's just himself all of the time (whereas I'm not sure Tiger ever really had much of a "self" to be, given the way he was raised by his father). How can anyone not root for him?

This is a major warning sign for Rory's further progress this week, though: he gained 4.34 strokes on the green yesterday, which isn't exactly sustainable, and only 1.43 strokes tee-to-green. A total of 25 guys shot under par yesterday, and only two of them had lower strokes gained totals from tee-to-green: David Lingmerth (who putted even better than Rory) and Beau Hossler.

It was a nice recovery but his 15 minutes of fame feels like it’s coming to an end.
Not even sure it was that nice of a recovery. I don't think they ever figured out or said where the ball ended up? From where the camera panned to, that didn't look like a great spot to be even if he did advance it 230 yards.

Actually, seems like it was a very nice recovery. The chip, however ….

Yes and yes.

The announcers are acting incredulous that he tried it. He had a perfect lie and an line to where he wanted to go. Every pro hits that shot. They aren't going to willingly drop it off essentially a fairway lie into the rough. It's rare, but guys do hit it to the hosipality tents from time to time and they almost always play it so long as there is a line to the hole.

I spent roughly 6 hours within 20 feet of that spot on the deck yesterday. Saw almost every group go through there. Bryson hooked his tee ball left, and was up against the grandstand, so he got relief out to the ropes, but still had to come right over a corner of the deck to hit his 2nd. I was standing on the corner of the deck, and he basically hit it about 5 feet from us. I have it all on video, but I don't know how to post videos. I should say I have it on 4-5 videos, because that's how fucking slow Bryson is.

Shift change so of course no golf but I think the Daffue train is off the tracks. I think he's in the right rough off 16.

Balls are sinking in the rough to the point where the camera can't see them. Enjoy!

The course seems to be playing fair but tough. The greens are a lot bigger than years ago. Missing the fairway seems to be a roll of the dice... some decent lies, some awful lies, some insane bounced off boulders, and good luck in the fescue. Oh, and the rough around greenside bunkers is downright mean (not to mention balls embedding in the soft sand of lips/edges of bunkers).
