"Former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant instructed his wife’s friend — whose nonprofit was receiving millions in subgrants from the welfare department he oversaw — to pay NFL legend Brett Favre $1.1 million, according to a new court filing."

Don't know if I should go with "forget it Jake, it's Mississippitown" or "forget it Jake, it's Favretown."

And without getting all V&N up in here, you knew he was a snake, bitch.

He claims that he received the money for appearances, speeches, etc., but didn't know it was coming from the welfare fund. It's certainly plausible. There's no way to know at this point if he's being honest or not.

I'm not sure which is coming to a theater near me: "The Blindside 2" or "There's Something about Nancy."

Who made the “he’s like a kid down there” joke? That might’ve been the greatest dick joke of all time.

Honestly, if you were to pick a retired football player to be tied up on this, would anyone else be your top guess?

I know what you are quoting but think stopping after the first two are appropriate enough to convey what is necessary. The last line is not necessary.

V&N posts of any sort will be penalized.

Or what Nip said.

re-edit: wait, there's nothing V&N about phallic Favre jokes

I believe it was the Deadspin comment section. Another "this isn't the first time Favre is guilty of a pic-6"

I believe Namath is sober now and has apologized for, among other things, the Suzy Kolber "I wanna kiss you" incident. Are there other reasons/incidents to suspect Namath would be involved in something like this?
Nothing concrete, but he constantly shows up on my tv doing those Medicare commercials that seems sort of scammy to me.

It really sucks that Drew Bledsoe wasn't able to be cast in There's Something About Mary.

I always got a kick out of the fact that they made Favre look like a lecherous turd before the world really knew he was a lecherous turd. Now, if only they had him stealing money in some stupid plan to win over Mary's heart as well.

Just to note, we discussed this when it came out over 2 years ago, click the up-arrow on the quotes to jump to those conversations. First time was in a 2020 BBTL offseason thread:

I knew Brett Favre was a drama queen. I didn't know he was a welfare queen, too.

https://nypost.com/2020/05/06/brett-favre-repaying-1-1-m-for-no-show-speeches-auditor-says/
The Favre thing is strange. He made $1.1 million for speeches he never gave and the money came from a Mississippi assistance program. Today the state auditor (paraphrasing) “applauds him for making the program whole.“ It leaves out that there’s massive fraud at the center and Favre took money for doing nothing. Continues to prove he’s just a bad guy in an everyman wrapper.

Let me add the requisite “if this was Brady...”
...another fall 2020 thread had more details about the Favre thing from a PBS spotlight:
...and a few months ago in relation to another news item involving Tony Dungy:
Having read David Roth's piece in Defector about Brett Favre and Mississippi DHS funds being funneled to rich and powerful people, it's probably a scheme to do the very same thing in Florida.
The Defector article in question, which has more detail than that original NY Post report, is here:

https://defector.com/brett-favre-and-the-thin-line-betweenmaking-plays-and-massive-fraud/

Bottom line, the news here is the court filing, since the original incident is 2+ years old. And it appears that Favre claimed he'd paid back the money, and hadn't repaid shit.

Thanks. I was confused and questioning my memory. "Again???"

But continue on. It's never a bad time to shit on Favre.

This story is a big deal beyond Favre -- the director of the state agency overseeing the cash welfare program essentially embezzled and improperly spent almost $80 million, and the scandal reached as high up as the former governor (who at the very least fostered a cavalier culture of compliance and budget awareness and routed money to people like Favre who curried favor).

In addition to the no-show speeches for which Favre was paid, he and a business partner repeatedly hit up the former governor for millions from the state to buy into a drug they were developing supposedly to address concussion symptoms -- the money was supposed to be used for people with low income. Favre also successfully siphoned millions more in welfare money to fund a new volleyball arena at his daughter's college.

The guy is a scumbag, and this is not going to end well for him. There's no way he escapes at least civil liability.

A reporter from a MS non-profit site has been knocking coverage out of the park: https://mississippitoday.org/2022/04/06/brett-favre-used-fame-favors-welfare-dollars/

I guess where I’m tripping up on this… did Favre know what this money was for? Was he running a scam? If I’m someone like him and I ask for money from a government agency would I ask where the money comes from? Or am I just grateful that I got it? Having a hard time generating feelings over this until more details emerge. I’m pretty ambivalent either way for now.

Thanks for the context. If anyone wants to start a V&N thread to discuss the reality of it, I'd encourage it, but this thread is for shitting on Favre.

Ah, gotcha -- my bad -- it should have been obvious to me that your link to the 29-page Circuit Court of Hinds County filing was a red herring in the second post.

Actually, my citing of the report was an accident--I meant to cite the article. I would have been fine if it had gotten V&Nish, but the dopes are very clear, and I want to respect that.

I do think it's fascinating the extent to which a lot of very wealthy people are willing to do really dodgy stuff for money they don't need.

I can’t tell if you guys are kidding or not. This BBTL, not P&G. While it’s fun to shit on Favre, actual news is welcome too. I’m grateful for the news because it makes me want to shit on Favre more.

TLDR: state-appointed lawyer attempting to get millions in misspent welfare money back sacked Saturday-night-massacre style because he was hitting too close to home for the executive state gov and power institutions.

Apparently Favre promised $5 millions for a volleyball center at southern miss but then had welfare dollars pay for it instead.
I can’t figure out if this is a joke or not.

Eh. Don’t care. :)

One of the most amazing nonprofit stories in the country: state money meant for needy families was funneled (via nonprofits) to build a volleyball stadium to please Brett Favre. Uncovered by @ayewolfe of @mstoday.
Clicking through several times eventually gets you to the actual news article:

https://mississippitoday.org/2022/07/13/phil-bryant-subpoena-southern-miss-volleyball/

Favre was the fiercest proponent of the project at USM, his alma mater and where his daughter played on the volleyball team. He connected with Nancy New, Deborah Bryant’s friend, who was receiving tens of millions in no-bid grants from the welfare department to provide services to needy families...
Also in December of 2017, the nonprofit paid Favre’s company Favre Enterprises $500,000, the auditor found. New said in a recent court filing that Gov. Bryant directed her to make those payments to Favre for “speaking at events, keynote speaking, radio and promotional events, and business partner development.”

The nonprofit paid Favre another $600,000 in June of 2018 for a total of $1.1 million.
And:
Around the same time, Favre was also working with welfare officials to move grant funds to a pharmaceutical startup called Prevacus, a company at the center of the initial criminal charges against the News. Favre was investing in Prevacus himself — around $1 million of his own money, he told Men’s Health magazine in 2019 — and expected to strike it rich.
