Maybe there's something there with Pasta if Pasta refused to sign here but for some reason was OK with Calgary.

That's about all I've got.

Honestly? I would probably consider Tkachuk for Pasta straight up if they were both willing to agree to sign extensions with the new teams.

Yeah, we may rate kids like Lohrei, Merkulov, and Harrison, but not many people that get paid to write about these things do. For them, the Bruins prospect pool is Lysell and a whole lot of moths, which means that any realistic trade for Tkachuk is probably way too rich for Boston.

I do wonder what this does for the Flames, though. How much longer does Darryl Sutter stick around? What do they do with Mangiapane and Kylington? Can they unfuck Monahan and salvage something from this past week?

Dom has Lysell and Lohrei as 1A and 1B and says he'd listen to an argument than Lohrei is better than Lysell.

But your overall point is made.

It's a devastating offseason for Calgary. 111 point team, arguably the 2nd best team in the conference, letitimate title contender. And then poof, it's gone.

The consensus seems to be that Tkachuk wants to get back to the USA like Gaudreau. I do wonder if he'd consider Ottawa with his brother Brady locked up there long term. Ottawa has the room and resouces to make it happen. They gave up picks for DeBrincat, just $ for Giroux, but kept their deep prospect pool intact. They don't really have a need for a RW, but I wonder if the opportunity is too much to pass up.

Just kidding. Vegas is going to trade Eichel for Tkachuk.

He's a perfect target for the Bruins. 24, big, good defensively, kind of a shit stain. They just don't have close to a package that will get him.

Debrusk
Lysell
Lohrei
2023 1st

That's probably the best package they could offer and it won't sniff the best offer they get, I don't think. It all depends on where Matt would sign long term. You gotta think St Louis offers Kyrou ++ to bring the home town kid home, right?

Even if that was accepted by Calgary there’s zero way to sign him here under the cap.

You could after next year. They would have the cap space to cover it, they’d just need a fucking miracle out of player develop this year to fill in the gaps.

That’s an interesting deal for Florida. Both Huberdeau and Weegar are in the last year before UFA, and the Tkachuk extension more than eats up their cap hit. Since they’re still ~$4 million over the cap, their wheeling and dealing isn’t done.

Calgary may have bought a year to retool on the fly. Huberdeau cushions the double blow of losing Gaudreau and Tkachuk, but I’d think there’s still work to do there.

Tkachuk is a better player than Huberdeau but this is not a great trade for Florida. Maybe they have some indications Huberdeau and Weegar won't sign long term with them. That would change my calculus. By Dom's value model last year, Tkachuk was worth $15.6m but Huderdeau was worth $13.6m and Weegar $12.6m.

Is it weird that this makes me want to trade Pasta? Am I a bad person?

It’ll hinge on getting Hiberdeau and Weegar signed long term, but I think it’s an absolute heist for Calgary. Weegar is but anonymous but a Norris caliber player.

Tkachuk is better than Huberdeau but I’m not sure if Florida is actually better.

I think it gives Calgary a lot of options. If the going price for an elite UFA winger is what the Flames just got back for Tkachuk, I'd find out where Huberdeau would sign long term and then get a huge package for him. Suzuki ++? If they can lock up Weegar, their D is legit.

Hanafin - Weegar
Kylington-Tanev
Zadorov-Andersson

I’m not sure how FLA gets under the cap. Hornqvist’s $5.3 million seems to be the obvious candidate but they don’t have much left in terms of sweeteners. If teams wanted a 1st for JVR, I can’t imagine they’d accept less for Hornqvist.

No buyout window right? They could get most of the way there if available.

No, they don‘t have anyone in arb.

Duclair blew his ACL out right after the season so they could LTIR him for a bit but I think he is in the same boat as the Bruins injuries and due back Decemberish.

The Kings are retiring Dustin Brown's number on February 11th. Which is fine, he was a long time captain and took them to two Cup Championships.

But they are also putting up a statue for him, which seems..... I don't know, overkill might be the right word for it. Am I wrong?

They also will have three statues now as Gretzky and Luc Robitaille also have one.

He's the first (and only) captain in franchise history to win a Stanley Cup for them. I think it's reasonable.

It appears Dionne is part of a "Kings greatest moments" monument outside Staples Center, so he sort of has one.

Yes. That was unveiled as part of the kings 50th anniversary celebration

as does the long time (former) voice of the Kings Bob Miller (Voice of the kings for 44 years)

Yah. Plus he spent his entire career with the team. Its perfectly reasonable.

So Dom Luszczyszyn did a poll on how people feel about NHL front offices, both generally and their favourite team’s, and there aren’t a ton of surprises. Apparently, though, there’s a pretty massive gap between how the general public feels about the Bruins and how its’ fans feel:

The Boston Bruins have one of the best teams in the league every year. Every year! And yet, every year the fan base screams that it’s not good enough. Fair enough for Title Town, but from an outside perspective the standards set for Boston sports always seem a little funny. On average, fans rate their own team 0.4 points higher than the public does. Bruins fans have rated their own team 0.6 points worse than the public — by far the worst of any team. Only four other teams are negative with the next worst, Philadelphia, at minus-0.2 points.
It goes into some detail, with a big gap at draft/ development and roster building, but it’s an interesting read.

I think the disconnect between Bruins fans and the rest of the league is the rest of the league sees a team that's been top 5 in the league every season for 5-6 years now, and team that has typically won a round in the playoffs. A lot of fanbases would kill for that sort of success, and from an outsiders perspective, it looks good on the FO.

Bruins fans see more of the warts. They see an FO that inhertied the core (minus McAvoy) and hasn't been able to get them over the hump. They've struggled to draft and develop and they've struggled to fill glaring holes on the roster and those glaring holes are what has kept them from winning a 2nd Cup with this group (Karson Kuhlman 2RW for game 7 in 2019).

Alexandre Texier won’t play for the Blue Jackets this season. His quote from the press statement:
During the past year, I have experienced some personal issues and challenges and I feel I need to be close to my family at this time. I have love and respect for the city of Columbus, the Blue Jackets, and the fans as everyone has always treated me first-class. I truly appreciate the support, help and empathy I have received from team management, the coaching staff, doctors, trainers and my teammates. This was a hard decision, but it is the best one for me right now.
Apparently, the kid is very close to his family in France, and a couple of them died recently.
As far as logistics go, this will be a suspended without pay, and his $1.525M cap hit comes off the books. He will be allowed to sign a 1-year contract with a European club if he chooses.

JT Miller signed for 7 years, $56M with the Canucks, so my dream of him being 3C for the Bruins is out the window.
Hey when you can lock up one of the worst defensive players in hockey when he gets most of his points on the power play for $8m a year until he's 35 yo, you gotta do it. I'm happy he's not an option. I wonder what this means about Horvat (or Petterson). I guess they plan to play Miller on the wing long term.
