We know what @TheoShmeo's answer would be.
What happened to him? Hopefully he didn't pass on and is ok. Returning to the topic at hand; I'd have to say Clemens. Since I'm 47 the 80s Red Sox were the first team I followed. I was crushed when Roger signed with the Blue Jay's and then engineered a trade to the Yankees. I was too young to remember Lyle or Tiant although if I was around back then I'd probably have missed them the most.

This may be more of a backwash discussion, but I think he was either banned or took his ball and went home after posting a terribly misogynistic thread.

Just now reading through this thread. Due to my age the Boggs thing didn’t bother me too much at the time because the Yanks were not much of a threat in my baseball following experience then. Of course ‘96 and the horse ride sucked very shortly thereafter.

Clemens was a real bitter pill though. It was how good he was since leaving that made it the worst. Plus I was already jazzed up on hating his time in Toronto. Very easy and annoying fueling of hatred really.

I voted Boggs, more than anything, because when I looked at the list, him on the horse, in pinstripes, celebrating a championship was the first thing that came to my mind. And if it didn’t make me angry, it certainly was depressing at the time.

Also, I wouldn’t even have remembered Youk as a Yankee had you asked before I saw this poll.
I see Clemens is winning. I don’t think he hurt for me, as much as some others, because I was already pissed at him for going to Toronto and being unbelievable. Had he went straight to NY that would have probably been my answer, but I was too young to remember much of his Sox tenure, so he was already the enemy to me at that point.

It was probably Luis Tiant for me. He was absolutely lights out down the stretch in 1978 (4-2, 3.14 ERA in September), as well as 1975 (3-1, 1.47 ERA) and 1972 (6-2, 1.35 ERA). His departure was inexcusable. And, of course, he pitched a gem in Fenway in 1979 for the Yanks.

Another one that had fans annoyed at the time it happened was Bob Watson. The Sox picked him up in 1979 from Houston for Peter Ladd and, .... one Bobby Sprowl. He adjusted well to the new league (0.949 OPS and 13 HR's in 84 games). He was then signed as a free agent by the Yankees. Turned out the Sox got the better of that deal, as Watson had one decent year before falling off the cliff in his mid-30's. But it was symbolic of the Sox at the time, as Sullivan and LeRoux really had no idea how to run a baseball team in the era of free agency.

Lyle probably hurt most from a team impact point of view, although I'm sure Zimmer would have burnt out his arm like he did Campbell's. But Sox probably win one of Games 2 or 7 in 1975 with him coming out of the bullpen.

Damon didn't bother me that much; 2004 erased pretty much all of the Yankee envy, and the Sox went on to win again in 2007. The Boggs on the horse image was just silly; he was long past his prime. Clemens bothered me a lot more, although he was always irritating to have around here and I found him even more irritating after he left.

he would have had a couple years of Kasko and Darrell Johnson first. But we had Bobby Bolin (and Bill Lee closed briefly) so who needed Lyle? :)

I can't understand the Benintendi angst. Didn't seem like anybody was particularly sad to see him go when he was traded. He was a decent player for us, particularly in 2018, but was he a real difference maker? It's not like he turned his back on us to directly join the Yankees like Damon, Ellsbury or Tiant did.

I'd feel a lot more angst right now if the Yanks had acquired Soto last night.
It’s recency bias. Also, it sucks to see someone who had a hand in our more recent championship end up in the other side of the Yankee-Sox rivalry.

I’m mad at my 15 year old Sox-loving daughter because she got COVID this week by being an irresponsible 15 year old. So right before she went to bed tonight when I was doing the dishes downstairs and she was brushing her teeth I said, “Want to hear something that will really ruin your night? Benintendi just got traded to the Yankees.”

She said “Are you freaking KIDDING me?”slammed the door and went to bed.

So, Beni …
My wife had a similar reaction. One of our Fenway trips last year, we bought an autographed picture of Beni’s catch in front of the scoreboard. She had it matted and framed and it has a nice place in our home. She had been following that Beni was on the block and could be traded, and when I saw the news, I said, “You might have to take your picture down off the wall.” Without skipping a beat, she yells, “Oh, eff that!” She knew he had gone to the Yankees and I didn’t even have to say where he’d gone.
