Actually, hair pulling isn't against the rules.
That's not really true. Its one of the many, many actions that is not specifically listed in the rules as a red card offense, so the referee has to make a case-by-case determination whether the action rises to the level of "violent conduct" or not. I'm pretty sure head butting and stuff like that is exactly the same.

The question is why it wasn't deemed violent conduct, especially when there are precedents like this one where the hair pull was deemed violent conduct (wasn't seen at the time but Huth got a retrospective red and three match ban). Huth just yanks Fellaini's hair back, Romero pulled Cucurella all the way to the ground.

Everything other than the hair pull is just B.S. complaints.

The Bentacour tackle, with Taylor's positioning, isn't even really a 50/50 call. Taylor sees him toe the ball, 80 percent of the time a ref isn't calling that (nevermind that it was way before the goal). Passive offside is an argument that comes up 10 times a year. I happen to hate it (I think if you're off you should be off no matter what), but that's a judgement call that happens often.

Cuti should have gotten a red for the hair pull though. Chelsea has a good argument there.

Nobody would be arguing about this if Chelsea just properly marked the 6'2" CF with 184 PL goals for the last kick of the game.

None of that is a good reason for Tuchel to act like an absolute toddler in the post match. Yes there were some situations that didn’t go his way and he has every right to be angry. But as a leader of a team and a manager he’s got to do what all of them do and shake a hand and make cryptic post match comments. “You’ll look me in the eye when you shake my hand” is serial killer/loser bullshit.

Some interesting selections by Klopp for this match. Milner and Elliott starting ahead of Henderson and Keita in midfield. And Phillips ahead of Gomez.

Palace are also going five at the back, which is unusual for them.

Really weird. It’s a 5-4-1, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen them do in the 10 years I’ve been watching them. Especially weird that Ward is one of the CBs in this formation, and Ayew is up front. I guess Ayew makes sense since he’s so good at tracking back and playing defense (at least relative to his offensive production), but it seems like Vieira is hoping for a 0-0 as best case scenario. Which I’d probably take, especially with City coming in week 4.

Viera wanted a back 3 as an option more this year, did he not? I thought that was at least part of the logic of the Chris Richards signing (although he seems to not yet be tactically bedded in or fit or trusted, if Ward's starting at CB)

Yeah, that’s what I’d heard…but I would have expected Richards to be the one (or a healthy Tomkins) before putting Ward there. Perhaps he’s still too new for a start in week 2.

My main question tonight is how Sadio Mane is going to kill us from Munich.

This new emphasis on refereeing is basically "call nothing". It's going both ways so no advantage but it sure is jarring to watch.

p.s. - how many minutes can Gomez play?

I’ve seen this horrific story a million times before and probably Liverpool score 3 in the last 10 minutes but I’m legitimately interested to see if Dias and Nunez can be as clutch as Firmino and Mane were. So many results were dragged out late with that old guard will the new young guns step up as the pressure builds?

Liverpool have created plenty. I’d be really surprised if Palace can hold onto a 1-0 there have been so many of those patented Liverpool diagonals

Diaz has looked a shadow of himself off of last year’s form. Every time he gets the ball he’s been running backwards.

Diaz needs space to be effective. With Palace effectively playing a drum line defense, he's not getting any space at all. He seemed to be frustrated by the physical nature as well in the first half. This is a game that feels like it needs Thiago or Firming to unlock something special. Neither is available so we'll see who can come to the rescue. Carvalho is the only player available upfront.

No excuse for what Nunez did but not calling anything all game is going to lead to stuff like this happening all year. Totally deserved red but guys will have to learn to keep their heads this season.

Luis Diaz so thoroughly proved me wrong that I had bitten off my concerns about Darwin. When you get guys like him this shit is going to happen.

Shame that Anderson gets away clean, though.
