I don’t follow the 49ers closely but the coverage yesterday seemed to suggest that their front four/pash rush had really fallen off recently.

Are there some injuries/personnel who will benefit from 2 weeks to heal or is it likely to still be worse than prior for the SB?

Especially in the second half yesterday it seemed like Mahomes was getting knocked off his game a bit by the Ravens D. Would think SF will have to do similar to keep this one close.
Yup. SF needs to get to Mahomes to have a chance. That’s what Tampa Bay did and it really impacted him. Baltimore’s defense was very good after the bad start but Lamar and the offense were just so bad.

SF can’t cover that well so if Mahomes has time, SF will basically need to be perfect on offense. Mahomes will simply pick them apart. He’s managing the game so well right now.

Is this true? I don't have any stats but my eye test from watching every niners game this year is they do cover very well. Ward is excellent, Lenoir is very good and Thomas is OK. Other than Burrow, I don't remember anyone dicing them up that bad this year.

They can't stop the run at all though, and that's been an issue for months.

And unlike Harbaugh, Reid will use Pacheco and CEH plenty to soften everything up.

That's what scares me the most, since after that the ball is still in Mahomes's hands and he does make shot happen.

Wilks has his job cut out for him, but I think he adjusted well in the 2nd half vs a very potent Detroit rushing attack, except with Mahomes instead of Goff at QB the Niners need two entire halves of Wilks playing it well.

9ers defense grades out pretty well vs the pass, but it hasnt been too pretty the last 2 weeks (especially considering their two biggest stops in the 2h yesterday were on brutal Lions drops).

Teams have been able to run on them, and DET + GB gashed them. Will the Chiefs commit to running the ball? Reid, for as good as he is with a lot of stuff, gets real cute sometimes especially in short yardage and goal to go situations.

I'd say having Warner + Greenlaw is about as good as you can hope for vs Kelce...except for BAL w/ Queen + Smith and they still got him matched on CBs and he dominated the 1st half (KC offense mostly died in the 2h tho).

Cousins comes to mind as well, he owned that game.

Lamar also had an excellent game and, if I recall correctly, didn't really have to throw much at the end due to their lead.

If I were a 49ers fan, I wouldn’t be feeling too great about the defense despite the talent level on that side of the ball. Their D has looked very vulnerable and needed heroics from the offense (and opponent boneheaded mistakes/fluky plays) to survive against Green Bay and Detroit - neither of whom are as good as KC is right now when factoring in the importance of QB/coaching

49ers need to hope for a shootout, I don’t see them winning a low scoring game simply because Mahomes is Mahomes. If points are at a premium and it comes down to one or two plays or coaching decisions, Mahomes/Reid are a lot more likely to get it done.

SF on paper is a more talented roster, but every “X factor” seems to be in KC’s favor. Better QB, better HC both of whom know what it takes to win a big game, much better DCoordinator who has (unfortunately for Pats fans) proven to come up with terrific game plans with an extra week, better kicking situation, playing arguably their best ball of the season defensively.

Im struggling to find areas where SF is better other than McCaffrey/Samuel being more likely to rip off a huge play. Which counts for a lot, but you can’t rely on home run plays in a Super Bowl. I think their key on offense is dialing up some blitz beater draws and screen plays and try to exploit Spags’ tendency to get overly aggressive.

Since KC’s week 8 bye in 2022, they’ve allowed only one 300+ passing game (302 to the eagles in the Super Bowl). McCaffrey has to come up big several times in the pass and run game for SF to have a shot here.

Other than McCaffrey vs the Chiefs run defense, where does SF have any significant edge?

QB? Mahomes vs Purdy isn’t even close.
Coaching? Reid and Spags are just on another level right now.
Special teams? Moody is unreliable.
Pass coverage? Lions and Packers receivers were open all game.

Even the vaunted 49ers front seven have come up small and been pushed around in these playoffs.
WR core the 49ers have a MASSIVE edge.

If Thuney doesn’t play, the 9ers have the edge at OLine as well

I think the Chiefs should absolutely be favored in this game, but, SF's receivers are far and away better than KC. It's not close. Aiyuk, Deebo and Jennings are all better than probably any of the KC receivers and Kittle is not far off Kelce. Add McCaffrey and I'd say this is an area that SF surely has an advantage, if we're breaking it down that way.

Also while Pacheko is awesome, CMC is the best in the league.

It looks like the biggest mismatch in this game is Andy Reid vs Steve Wilks.

On paper, I think the 9ers are better. Someone needs to get to Kyle Shanahan before the game and tell him he needs to be way more aggressive if they want to dethrone the champs. No playing for field goals or being ultra conservative on 4th down

Rashee Rice is definitely better than Jauan Jennings but Aiyuk and Deebo are both way better than Rice

Yeah their receivers are clearly better (though you’re underselling Rice a bit IMO) but for me the overall passing game still favors Mahomes and the Chiefs simply because it’s Mahomes.

Here's the thing, the Niners do have the talent and the personnel to get it done.

They have had massive failures both first halves of the playoff games they played and they cannot afford to have another first half like that one vs KC though.

There is a big, huge, gigantic edge at the QB position that makes up for almost anything. Mahomes is that good. We fans suffered that while watching a 10 point lead disappear in the Super Bowl (alas, Jimmy G doesn't overthrow that pass and we are talking a different story). Yet, he can be stopped or at least contained. Lost in the shuffle is the fact that Baltimore shut him and KC down in the second half (they happened to shoot themsleves in the foot too at offense).

Soemone said here (maybe another thread) already, but Shanahan is pretty close to where Reid was before he won a Super Bowl. So the coaching will be something to watch. Also, let's see how/if Wilks makes changes in the defense (like maybe benching Young).

I think you mean Shanahan is pretty close to where Reid was in coaching ability just before Andy won his first Super Bowl. Just wondering how you determine/conclude that.

SF is going to have opportunities to win this game. They have a team talented enough to do so. Really comes down to Purdy for me and the defense making one key stop, kind of like the Nick Foles win over the Pats (…dammit).

Niners aren’t going to stop the Chiefs. They just need to be aggressive and execute. Purdy has an extra level that Jimmy G could never reach. He just has to find it. We know Spagnuolo will have something ready for him.

But, end of the day, Niners have what they want. A pretty healthy team and a shot at the new dynasty.

If Purdy can keep scrambling as effectively as second half Lions game it will be extremely tough on the KC linebacker / safety group, though they definitely contained Lamar which I blame more on Raven's OC stupidity than the KC defense.

Emotionally I just want to see pouting from the Mahomes/Kel-Swift side and Kittle pile-drive someone.

I think he is in a similar space. Has reached the playoffs couple of times, even a Super Bowl, and can take that step now.

in terms of ability no, Reid is much better, but he also has a generational talent at QB

Yeah, as much as I want to see Mahomes fail, or at least be just excellent, he continues to play better than anybody. When he can’t scramble as well as he can now, will he be just excellent? I don’t know, he still will most likely have that arm and accuracy. At least Patriots fans have had the six Lombardis, 49ers five, and make it six in two weeks.

Steve Wilks needs to spend the next two weeks figuring out how to get Chase Young to give a shit. His lowlights from this week were pretty rough. I bet the Chiefs try running to his side a bunch early.

United Airlines is adding more than 40 direct flights between Kansas City to Las Vegas for the 2024 Super Bowl, where the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will play at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 11. The additional flights from Thursday, Feb. 8 to Monday, Feb. 12 will even celebrate pop culture’s buzziest power couple. Flight UA 1989 pays homage to Taylor Swift’s recently re-released 1989 (Taylor’s Version) album, while UA 2287 is a nod to the Grammy-winning musician’s song and her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s jersey number. There’s even UA 1587, a reference to the jerseys of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Kelce.

these next game plus next year is SF last shot after feb 2025 sf will have to break up because brock p will get 40-50 mil a year and paying the qb means most everyone else will not be paid

Mahomes has a cap hit of 57M and it hasn’t stopped KC yet. Almost every likely Super Bowl contender is going to have a QB with a 40M+ cap hit other than Houston and maybe 1-2 other teams.

It will hurt their ability to retain talent somewhat but that’s going to be true of most good teams so it evens out to some degree

She had a conflict for years because Pepsi sponsored the show and she had a deal with Coke.

The NFL has been rumored to ask that the performers give them a cut of their post-show earnings, and I don’t imagine that would fly with her.
She pulled her music from Spotify because she didn't like how they treated artists. They got her back after changing some things.

She could go to the NFL tomorrow, tell them she's doing the halftime show in 2025 AND that they're going to pay her $50M, and they'd bend over backwards for her because she's arguably the most famous person in the world. She doesn't need the NFL; and the NFL doesn't really need her, but they need her a LOT more than she needs them.

I dont think the last part is true. The NFL is the one pop culture thing more popular than Taylor Swift. A Taylor Swift TV special isn't getting 50 million viewers like Buffalo vs KC did.

The NFL will get their 120M viewers with Olivia, Billie, or SZA at halftime next year and be OK.

Sigh. I had a whole post written up and my computer crashed. I'll say this much: I agree the NFL would get 120M viewers with those artists, but Taylor Swift is just different. She's on the first billion-dollar grossing tour. She's just different. She's arguably the most famous person in the world who isn't involved in politics or soccer, and even then she's might be more famous (other than Xi or Modi, honestly). Globally, she's absolutely more popular than the NFL.

That said, Olivia, Billie and SZA would never be booked for the halftime show at this point (you know this, which is why you suggested them. This is in no way an insult or dig at you, btw).

Also, considering the NFL allegedly pays in "exposure" -- not money -- for the SB halftime show, it's funny that artists like The Who and The Rolling Stones rather recently took the gig. The point is that Swift does not need "exposure" -- they'd have to pay her to do the gig, not vice-versa.

Also, the commercials during the conference title games made it seem like there's a game going to be played in Africa next year -- Ghana, specifically. That would be a huge boost for the league.

I'm not sure why Swift being the world's biggest pop star means she's bigger than the freaking SUPER BOWL. Michael Jackson did the Halftime show the year he did the Dangerous tour, which had about the same amount of dates and tickets sold as the Eras Tour.

BTW The Stones were almost 20 years ago. Jay-Z produces the halftime show and he's riding the middle aged millennial nostalgia hard now (Dr Dre, Rihanna, Beyonce, Timberlake, Weeknd, Usher, Bruno Mars). I'd even argue that The Weeknd is a more popular artist than Swift over the last 5 - 7 years.

That run of acts will dry up soon (Outkast??) and it won't shock me to see Billie get the gig. She's a fairly traditional, slightly boring white artist + industry favorite with multiple Grammy and Oscar noms.

Couldn’t disagree more with several things here.

Weeknd isn’t within light years of TS in any metric that counts. She’s lapped him 1000x.

MJ vs TS is the comparison of heavyweights from their respective generations. It’s hard because the means of calculating salesof media have changed so much but assume that they both sold out stadiums, that one is meaningless. But Jackson was on a downward trajectory at the time of Dangerous, his best days and work were behind him. TS right now is having the best run of any artist ever. She’s Elvis + the Beatles + MJ.

Finally Billie Eilish is not Celine Dion.

Armstead for sure. Before the Packers game he was out for a few weeks with various nagging injuries; reportedly the most painful of which was plantar fasciitis. He's had that flare up on him off and on for a while now. Bosa seems to be fine, but definitely getting double teamed/chipped every play. Chase Young has been underwhelming; doubt he's hurt though. I wonder about Hargrave -- he was a force with interior pressure most of the season; either outright getting sacks or moving the QB out of the pocket into the arms of Bosa & Co. He seems to have gone radio silent since about the Thanksgiving game. I've been wondering if he's playing through an injury.

Hufanga remains a big loss to this team. He was solid in coverage but he also backstopped the run and kept RBs from getting past the second level. A general observation I'll make (and my family is sick of hearing me scream this at the TV the last couple of months) is that the defense has become enamored with trying to tackle by tossing a shoulder into ballcarriers. It happens all game long, game after game, for weeks now. The first 2/3rds of the season this defense rally-swarmed to the ball carrier and wrapped up - I don't know what changed or why, but they need to get back to that pronto.

That will be really interesting. I'm surprised they chose Ghana and not South Africa. Infrastructure is a bit better in the latter, there's a deeper rugby culture that might appreciate American football, etc. At any rate, that'll be fun.

Or maybe in an alternative universe, Weeknd is more popular. I never even heard of Weeknd.

The 28–3, ends 34–28 game, I was so shook at the half that I didn’t watch halftime at all, picking up at the second half kickoff. Never give up with Brady at QB. The next day, I watched my recording of the game and there’s this Lady Gaga playing at halftime. OK, different circumstances here, I’ll see what she’s got, and I thought she was great, still do. I should give more of these “new kids” a chance. LOL.

There's a legitimate argument to be made that Taylor Swift is the most famous person in the world right now....there's literally 0% chance that The Weeknd is more popular than Taylor Swift

No shit. I know Taylor Swift's music when I hear it, I know her face when I see it, and it's not even because I have a 13 year old daughter (who wasn't even a fan until about 6 months ago).

If The Weekend walked into my office right now asking for legal advice, I'd literally have no idea who he/she was. I'd probably recognize some of their songs, but wouldn't know they sing it, because I've never heard their name before.

Swift just sold over 4.3 million tickets to a 60 stop tour, and grossed over a billion in sales on tickets alone. She just gave out like 55mil in bonuses to the people that worked on the Tour. She's dating one of the most recognizable players in the NFL, and increased his popularity, not the other way around. Social media has basically melted down because Elon has her blocked on Twitter due to fake nudes of her being passed around (allegedly, I think he's worried about the impact she's about to have on a the Presidential election of the United States, think about that statement for a second, this is "Rock the Vote" Times 1000's).

Taylor Swift is a global phenomenon, on par with the Beatles, MJ, etc. Why did MJ do the Super Bowl? Because unlike now, the only way you could see MJ perform live was at something like the SB or the Grammy's, etc. There was no internet, there was no streaming, there were no live concerts on television. There was attending a concert, and things like the SB and awards shows.

Say what you will about Harbaugh, but those teams almost never missed a tackle. Wilks ought to get them watching tape of Willis, Bowman et. al. They were an elite tackling team. The missed tackles on this version drive me crazy too.

The best about your comments about the Weeknd is that he PLAYED the Super Bowl 3 years ago.

It was obviously memorable.

LOL, I can't even remember the last time I watched a halftime show. That's when eating and drinking goes into power mode.

LOL.
To be fair, "Blinding Lights" is the highest ranked song in Billboard Hot 100 history.

#2 is The Twist.

There has been a fragmenting of the music audience. Used to be there were a few big gatekeepers - the record labels, the networks (TV and radio), MTV, go back far enough syndicated programs like American Bandstand, Soul Train, Casey Kasem, etc. Now, every kid in the country can use an iPad to record and get their stuff out on YouTube/TikTok, and communities for dozens of niches abound, driven by the Internet, but there are fewer genre crossing superstars who are on the front nine of their careers who are your prototypical SB headliners.

There haven't been many halftime shows that have really been "hey we gotta watch this" for EVERYONE in a long time. I enjoyed the one with Snoop and Dre and Eminem but my then-12 yo daughter was laughing at it.

Prediction: Kelce will propose to Swift after the game if the Chiefs win.
You can bet on that! View: https://twitter.com/br_betting/status/1752105321416261845?lid=2mjvjjonccal

Frankly I do not get the hate. Some team will win 6 Lombardis and there are pelnty who can and some team will make it to more SueprBowls too. That does not take anythng awat from the enjoyment and magic that was the Brady-Bellichick era.

The fact that the Niners have actually rebuilt the team for a 3rd time from scratch into a championship contender has to be impressive as well.

I maybe blinded as a 49er fan and I certainly respect anyone who does not like the 9ers (as a Red Sox fan who hates the Yankees I should right?) I just don't get that reason, if that is it in your case.

BTW my nepobaby response was not for you. Quoted a response to a post so it was not clear.
I'm a Seahawks fan, so go Chiefs!

It looks like the biggest mismatch in this game is Andy Reid vs Steve Wilks.

On paper, I think the 9ers are better. Someone needs to get to Kyle Shanahan before the game and tell him he needs to be way more aggressive if they want to dethrone the champs. No playing for field goals or being ultra conservative on 4th down
This is very true. Steve Wilks is a horrible head coach and meh as a coordinator. That being said, the overall talent level is much higher on the Niners and if Purdy can stay mistake-free, they'll have a real good shot at winning this game.

I just googled Blinding Lights. I've definitely heard that song (#1 in anything is hard for me to process though), and now I know what the Weekend looks like.

What, you didn’t watch his HBO show?

Weeknd has a ton of great music. But Taylor is her own thing now. Bigger than Beyoncé even.

Very few people watched that show. Less people actually finished it. None enjoyed it. Not exactly a star making performance for Mr. Weeknd. Great house tho.

That said, the Weeknd is awesome, he's got a ton of bangers. But Taylor Swift is an entire galaxy right now. The Weeknd is Pluto.
