Bump for the games today. My beloved Betis kick off today as part of the 12:45 slate of games. AEK-Brighton and Atalanta-Sporting are probably the two headliner early games. In the later games, Marseille and their crazy fans are looking to put Ajax out of their misery (at least in Europe, the misery will continue in the league). Villareal and Panathinaikos will fight it out for second in their group.

Leverkusen travel to Hacken. The Germans have been crushing everyone but it’s of interest to folks who want to see Xabi Alonso’s tactics, probably the most studied in the world this side of Fluminense. We’re all likely going to deal with them when he heads back to Madrid this summer.

California. Duh.
Toulouse drew 0-0, so Liverpool have clinched the group and last 16 spot with a game to spare. Send in the kids for matchday 6.

Bump for the final group stage match day.

A few big matches most notably the WHU - SC Frieberg for first place in their group.
The Europa group winners get a bye and the second place qualifiers need to play a knockout game vs the UCL 3rd place teams.

A dead rubber treated like a dead rubber -- nice to see from Klopp given the injuries sustained at Midtjylland a few years back.

I only saw the first half, Quansah got his first goal for Liverpool and he took his chance really well...so that's a positive.

Mon The Gers. Needed a win in Seville, got a win. Top of the group. Got to hand it to the Ibrox lads. Keeping the coefficient alive.

Liverpool up 2-0 in the first half over Sparta Prague despite maybe being outplayed especially the last 15 mins or so. Pen drawn by and taken by Mac and then a beauty of a goal by Darwin on a knuckleball from just outside the box

Shaky start to the 2nd half for LFC giving up a quick goal and a few more chances but then get it back. I thought they had another one to go up 5-1 but it was called back for a very suspect offside. Salah looked on to me

Dom gets 5 anyway at the last second. A 4 goal lead heading into the 2nd leg should be helpful in saving some legs next week

West Ham-Freiburg is a big tie in terms of the PL getting a 5th CL spot.

Italy looks to be in very good shape at this point. They may not have teams go super deep but it looks like 5-6 of their 7 sides may advance to the next round of their respective competitions.

The last spot could then come down to England or Germany. England definitely have the upper hand with sides that are arguably favorites in all three competitions but if Freiburg knocked out West Ham in the Europa R16 it would be more of a tossup, especially with Brighton all but eliminated after the first leg today.

Is there a "red cards drawn" stat? Because Pulisic has to be leading the world in that category right now. A bit harsh in my opinion but Slavia Praha is down to 10 men.

looking at the replay, Pulisic got hit on the boot/ankle but grabbed his shin a couple inches up and made it look a lot worse. Not sure if the video ref saw it or if it made any difference.

also his goal was off a Leao shot from a tight angle that a defender was in position to clear, but Pulisic beat him to it and just nicked it past the defender's noggin.

I have to say Rangers were somewhat unlucky to just get a draw against Benfica last night. Benfica scored on a semi soft penalty and a cracking Goldson headed og.

They tired a bit towards the end but are in good shape going back to Ibrox.

Paquetá scores for West Ham to even up the tie - they should have too much quality for Freiburg...i fully expect Moyes boyz to march on.

A mile round the corner from me it's 0-0 at Ibrox and a very open game.

Acht well if you're not gonna leave a player on the half way line at corners your liable to get done on a speedy counter attack.

Benfica take the lead, a long VAR check for offside but the player was in his own half...so the goal stands.

Draw is out for next round:

Milan - Roma
Liverpool - Atalanta
Leverkusen - West Ham
Benfica - Marseille.

Liverpool with a good draw, West Ham with a bad one.
Possible Klopp vs Xabi final in Dublin still in play.

Those are 8 legit good teams. Should be a lot of fun.

Only saw the last 10-15 minutes of the half but Atalanta is really taking it to Liverpool, who look like they assumed they could win by getting out of bed. 1-0 but really could be 2-0 or 3-0.

Meanwhile, Moyes has brought his finest double decker bus to Germany, getting outshot 18-1 by Leverkusen yet somehow still 0-0.

Klopp bringing in the big gun - Mo, Szabo, & Robbo. Surprised Elliott came off, but Klopp is putting in the A Team.

Ha, just realized that Liverpool vs. Atalanta is essentially Red Sox vs. Celtics (of the Boston, not Glasgow variety), given the Henry and Pagliuca ownerships.

That was brutal from Liverpool. Worst performance of the season, maybe multiple seasons. After Kelleher’s face save, I was thinking of Karius in the Champions League. The game ended up about the same, even as Kelleher rebounded.

Holy hell, that was at Anfield? I don’t catch nearly as much Serie A as I used to, but it’s nice to see Atalanta still taking down big clubs. The real question is why some big club hasn’t snatched up Gasperini. He’s had enormous success in Bergamo and has turned that squad over several times without missing much of a beat at all. It’s not like they sit back and catenaccio teams either. They’re always pretty high in the scoring charts, sometimes with the most goals of any team in the Big 5 leagues.

Klopp going for it - Endo to the bench for a midfield of Szobo, Mac, & Jones. Trent gets the start, expect him to slide into the 6 spot in possession so that the 3 mids can bomb into the box. Gakpo starting suggests that, too - he'll withdraw some and try to facilitate as Salah & Diaz cut in and the mids push high.

They could do this! Or get run off the pitch in under 30 minutes. Either way, it won't be boring.

Salah with a pen! And Diaz close to a second...Liverpool are going 100mph right now. Not sure how long they can sustain this pace, but a 2nd goal would really put Atalanta in a spot.

Not sure Pool can keep a clean sheet. Atalanta's press is too good, their attackers to ready to surge ahead. The Reds have already gotten lucky a couple times.

How is that not a red. Handles what would have been a Diaz breakaway

Obligatory "Diaz breakaway is not a goal scoring opportunity"

And Diaz also gets yellow for complaining. Blecht.

Taking all the opportunity into consideration, it’s probably right that Liverpool are still down 2 on aggregate. I’m sure we’ll see Darwin soon and that will only add to the madness.
