What Was The Red Sox Starting Lineup For Your First Home Opener in Person?

I remember most of the line up - although I don't recall the starting pitcher. Sammy White was the catcher, Norm Zauchin at first, Frank Malzone at third, Don Buddin at short, Ted Williams in left, Jimmy Piersall in center, Jackie Jensen in right. I am unsure who played second - might have been Gene Mauch. It was a long time ago and I was very young and I remember there were a lot of empty seats - this was in the 50's.

I think my first was 1997. If I went to one before, I don't remember it. But 1997 sticks out because somehow we had tickets like 10-15 rows behind the plate, and none other than Randy Johnson was pitching for the Mariners. The biggest disappointment was that Griffey took the day off for Seattle. He had played in their first 9 games of the season, and despite having an off day the day before, didn't play.

But fun fact, old friend
Lee Tinsley
started in CF for the M's.

Anyway, here's the Sox lineup:

Garciaparra SS
Valentin 2B
Vaughn 1B
Stanley DH
Naehring 3B
Cordero LF
Pemberton RF
Haselman C
Mack CF

It was Opening Delay as the game had been postponed for a day by snow. That, combined with having firmly entered the “I’m just here not to get fined” phase of my college career, allowed me to attend.

Gordon went the distance to defeat Frankie Rodriguez, who had been traded the season before for Rick Aguilera’s delicate groin. Greenwell had a pair of doubles among his three hits, threw out Matt Lawton at second base, and almost threw another ball into the first base dugout— honestly, still a good day for an outfield alignment that featured Duncan the Walrus in right field. Every member of the starting lineup reached base at least once except Cordero, who was otherwise occupied bemoaning the persistent popularity of rotary phones.

My daughter wasn’t alive yet, but I love this post.

My first opening day in person was Manny’s Fenway debut, in which he promptly hit a three-run bomb in the first inning, forever cementing my fandom.

My brother in law, who bought the tickets, missed it because he had some work he needed to finish up. Sorry, man!

April 6, 2001, 1:05 start time on a Friday. Magical.

1998 vs Seattle: The year and day I became a Red Sox fan.

Mo Vaughn hit a walk off.

We were visiting my wifes best friend for a long weekend. We had
such a nice time visiting Boston.

Sadly, she(our friend)was a flight attendant on the second plane on 9-11. We have held a strong bond with the city and the Red Sox ever since.

That was my first home opener as well. Cold as hell that day after the snow out the day before. I think that's how my roommate and I ended up getting tickets. That lineup by the way. Wow hitting 1-9.

where I was last at
My first game was a week-end game against the White Sox close to my 6th birthday.

Sunday May 19, 1956 seems to fit, but can't swear to it.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS195705190.shtml

RSox lost 6-2

My lasting impression entering on the 1st base side was the extraordinary expanse of the green of the grass and the Wall.

Saw some pretty good ballplayers that day.

EDIT. I'm pretty sure my 1st home opener was in 1966 versus the O's

Sox lost that too in extras 5-4

April 10, 1989 vs Cleveland. The great Nick Essay with his first HR as a Red Sox. Drove up from NJ by myself and went to all three games of the series.

How many people had left at that point, do you think?
Quite a few, as the weather was pretty raw. But I wasn't leaving, as I had flown in from Florida for my first home opener. And when I saw Slocumb warming up, I turned to Cheri and said, "we've still got a chance!"

If I remember correctly, Giff took me to a Celtics victory over the Magic later that evening. Not quite as memorable, but good times nonetheless.

Damn you.

I left in the 8th inning and watched that from Whiskey’s. I still have not forgiven myself.
It is a shared shame. Fenway was less than half-full when I left and I arrived at O’Leary’s around the time Tony Fossas was loading the bases by walking Mike Benjamin, who had pinch hit for Scott Hatteberg, who in turn had pinch hit for Darren Lewis— a series of events that seems as non-sensical today as it did then. Of the four Mariners pitchers that failed to record a single out in that ninth inning, three spent part of their career with the Red Sox, including one that will be on the field this afternoon and another that contributed to the cause of today’s celebration almost as much as anyone that will be on the field this afternoon.

The concept of Pedro giving up 10 runs to that O’s lineup is kind of hard to believe.

It was absolutely insane. He just got pounded. I remember telling my wife, who knew a little about baseball (we met in a fantasy baseball league), how Pedro was probably going to throw a no-hitter tonight, so be sure to save your ticket stub.

It was the first time I was wrong telling her something but it wouldn't be the last.

This was quite a lineup. Four former MVPs! Six guys who should be DHing! Two criminally underrated Sox! And a guy who would go on to the front office of the Evil Empire. Wow. This lineup brings me back to college.

Yeah, I thought that team was going to be awesome. Before we knew about defensive metrics.

is that the worst defensive lineup ever? The OF is especially heinous.

This was my first game, too! It's just a shame that nothing terribly iconic happened that season. ;)
"Who the hell is this Lynn guy and why is hitting so high up in the order?"
Me to my Dad. Really. He only brought this comment up about 100 times.
In my defense I was 8.

Looks like a great day for the Sox, right? Unfortunately the buzz saw that was the 1984 Tigers scored eight in the top of the first and went on to win 13-9.

I can't think of a much worse defensive lineup. Valentin was miscast as shortstop, he was a better third baseman. Naehring should've been at second. Cordero played short in Montreal but for some reason they wanted him at second. Mo's glove was a rumor. Greenwell, O'Leary and Mitchell were all iron gloves, especially Mitchell by that point in his career. Out of all of them, Stanley was the okay-est, but even he wasn't great.

Man, sometimes I miss baseball when it was truly strange. You would never see a lineup like that now, even for one game. And while that's definitely the right move, it was a lot of fun at the same time. I still can't believe the Sox trotted that lineup out.

Tim Naehring will always be a "what if" case for me. Guy could play, but didn't stay healthy.

That OF is awful, but you should take a gander at their actual numbers. Naehring was a good 3B, Valentin had just logged an excellent year as a SS in 95 (highest dWAR in the league), and 95/6 for Vaughn were two of his rare peak average-ish 1B seasons.

The OF was mostly just old - Greenwell, while not graceful, wasn't that bad a LF (positive value in '95). O'Leary had a sort of neutral value in '95 (but his '96 would prove to be his worst fielding year.)

Mitchell had never been a defender though. And neither had Cordero.

That game may not have been the worst defensive lineup ever, but that season did not lack for strong contenders. While Canseco and Mitchell never played the outfield at the same time (likely due to the Geneva Convention), they were joined by Reggie Jefferson in the green mines of the field club. When Cordero’s tenure was truncated by his placement on the do no call list, Jeff Frye was just too damn gritty to be confined to a single position. Subsequent keystone contenders included Jeff Manto, Arquimedez Pozo, and Bill Selby, whose middle infield glove was well past its expiration date. I am far from certain that those three people have never been in a kitchen with Enmanuel Valdez’s mother.
