I assume the on-deck batter was not calling for a slide there at the plate. He should have run right through standing up.

Gonna need a 2004 Miracle to win this one, and, with recent injuries, to get to 85+ wins this season.

I’ll stay optimistic but the defensive shenanigans are definitely deflating my optimism.

Okay, cool. That would be the nice start of a miracle comeback which would be unbelievably appropriate today.

A lot of the game thread mojo from the 2004 era would not be allowed two decades later, for various reasons.

Defense has been so damn bad after looking really good for two series. Multiple games thrown away by failing to make the routine play.
And, you know, only scoring 1 run in each of the last two losses (I’m assuming a scoreless 9th here).

Yeah, that too. But I have more faith in the offense settling in than the defense. It was a huge issue last year and it’s looking like one again.

For better or worse, Baltimore has outplayed us so much in every aspect of the game that you could subtract all our shitty defense and we would still have had no chance today.

The misplays and lack of offense are aggravating and troubling.

The kind of things you can't have against these Orioles, who are loaded.
To make it worse, Burnes is probably the best, most proven (currently active) pitcher in the game.

Here's the list of Cy Young winners over the last 15 years (copied from Posnanski):
  • 2023: Gerrit Cole (hurt)
  • 2022, 2019, 2011: Justin Verlander (hurt)
  • 2022: Sandy Alcantara (hurt)
  • 2021: Robbie Ray (hurt)
  • 2020: Shane Bieber (hurt)
  • 2020: Trevor Bauer (unwanted)
  • 2019, 2018: Jacob deGrom (hurt)
  • 2017, 2014: Corey Kluber (retired)
  • 2017, 2016, 2013: Max Scherzer (hurt)
  • 2016: Rick Porcello (retired)
  • 2015: Dallas Keuchel (minor leagues)
  • 2015: Jake Arrieta (retired)
  • 2014, 2013, 2011: Clayton Kershaw (hurt)
  • 2012: David Price (retired)
  • 2012: R.A. Dickey (retired)
  • 2010: King Félix Hernández (retired)
  • 2010: Roy Halladay (in the Hall of Fame)
  • 2009: Zack Greinke (Still hoping to be signed?)
  • 2009: Tim Lincecum (retired)

So every Cy Young winner since 2016 is either injured, Bauer, or Kluber.
Makes Burnes look even better.

Letting Winckowski go 65+ pitches to save the bullpen that didn't pitch yesterday seems like a really good way to end up down another relief pitcher.

First ass-kicking of the year. Just wish it wasn't the home opener / 2004 reunion / Wakefield tribute day.

It would be a fitting tribute to Wake's 2004 ALCS game 3 outing if the Sox can go on to win the next 4 (or 8) games.

I mean, it's a move made with the rest of the series coming up, right? Not to mention that they're not off again til the 22nd. Might as well not burn more guys in a game that they're not competing in.

Sure, I understand that there are reasons for it. Just already traumatized by injuries this season.

Well this sure was a powerful message to the AL that the Sox are gonna protect their "House" this season. Yuck. 2 lousy hits , poor fielding and pitching.
