    Lou Brock passes at 81

Apparently (as I just learned on Maron's podcast) the Brock-a-brella marketing opportunity was created by Billy Crudup's father who was a part time bookie, failed marketer, and friend of Lou Brock (listen to 41:00 here).

    Lou Brock passes at 81

I was bummed out when Henderson snagged the stolen base record from him. And he's prominent in one of my favorite Tribe Called Quest lyrics: "Okay, if knowledge is the key then just show me the lock, got the scrawny legs but I move just like Lou Brock" - Q-Tip

Game 2: Celtics vs. Raptors: "They don't look very scary. More like a six foot turkey!"

Here is the video. View: https://youtu.be/2LnAFnJuRZw I do find it frustrating that in the highlight packages all they show is made baskets for the most part...

If the season gets to September 1, the Red Sox luxury tax resets

OK, it's 6:40 eastern which means that it really finally is three days precisely. (Thank you for your kindness in overlooking my failure which was not only a failure of rounding, but indeed a failure of being able to count to the number four while looking at a calendar.)

How much have you watched so far?

My daughter claims that she is "reading" when she listens to an audio book. In this same vein, I will claim in this poll that I am "watching" when I listen to the game on the radio. Listening is my mode -- Joe Castiglione makes me nostalgic and I can do dishes, mow the lawn, fold laundry...

    Optimally Upgrade/Replace RAID 5

Excellent -- thanks for all of the advice! I have some research to do but will look into NAS and/or SSD caching and steer clear of SMR disks at all costs. (I will likely retain the server a little longer because while the CPUs are slow it has 32 threads so is still useful for parallel tasks).

    Optimally Upgrade/Replace RAID 5

I have a box running Windows Server 2012 with a RAID 5 setup-- it's 3TB with four 1-TB 7200 RPM disks. My business is fairly GIS intensive, so I've used about 75% of the 3TB. Also, the drives are 6-years old and it's time to upgrade for more capacity and speed, Also -- the server is in my...

    Spyware 201

Russia was probing my ports! (And it didn't feel that good.) I was checking the reason for a failed backup on my Windows box when luckily I noticed many failed logins and remote desktop access failures in the event log. Apparently for several days my remote desktop logins have been under...

    Best Red Sox Closer: Nominees

Papelbon. I remember in late June 2006 when I was on a business trip and learned he gave up an ER. "Darn it, I said, that means his ERA has doubled." My colleague somewhat condescendingly explained to me that that is not how ERA works. Then he got quiet when I explained that was only his...

    Free Upgrade to Win10

Sometimes it is the right time to get a new laptop, that's for sure. But do keep in mind that to purchase a high-quality laptop-ready SSD is only about $80. So if you have enough memory in your laptop, and your processor is not super slow, it's almost definitely the hard drive that is going...

    Free Upgrade to Win10

I had a laptop with Windows 10 and a slow hard drive. I only used it for business meetings every few weeks at most. Win10 used to force upgrades on you and would sometimes take hours to upgrade. In my experience if the machine had been off for several weeks it would see the updates as...

    Windows 7 ESUs

FYI, after several more rejections from the Microsoft provider website, I did find a vendor who is willing to provide ESUs to small businesses through a ZDNet article. So for $67 or so I bought myself another year of security updates and can finally update my machine (after cloning the hard...

    Windows 7 ESUs

I think so. And in fact a bunch of important security updates were released yesterday afternoon. I think yesterday was the last day they were going to release new updates but they should remain available going forward.

    Windows 7 ESUs

Anyone purchase Win 7 ESUs? Extended security updates? I have a nearly 8-year old Windows 7 box here but it has 21GB RAM and 8 processors. Since I updated to an SSD, I have no problem with my machine's speed, especially as I send big jobs to a faster 32-core server. I could just try to...
