    Tour de France

Pogacar's ride was amazing -- one of the best performances I've seen on a bicycle. Roglic wasn't terrible, either -- he ended up in fifth place for the stage. Pogacar was just beyond the ordinary (and that's not an accusation of drug-taking, either). Roglic looked out of sorts as soon as he...

2020 Tompa Bay: Season-long Game Thread

Gronk double-teamed and stoned on the line by two Saints on that third down play. Reminds me of the playoff game against the Chargers when Belichick eliminated the tight end (who was that?).

Did MLB’s first four base error happen today?

A bit of detail on Lolich's 4-base bunt, courtesy of an article by Sebastian Oslund. And another description of the play from the account of the Detroit Free Press' May 7, 1971 edition, written by Jim Hawkins.

    8/7 — 25 days until tax reset

I was living in Berkeley, CA, at the time Welch won the award (he was pitching for the Oakland A's). It wasn't easy to find a person who could understand my point of view.

Red Sox in the Toilet - 8/1/2020

Just to save others a bit of time: in 1925, the Sox finished last in the American League -- a _distant_ last, with a record of 47-105, 49 games back of the Senators for first, and 21 games (!) behind the seventh-place Yankees (so I guess the year wasn't a complete loss). The "pitching" staff...

Which document camera should I purchase?

I'll be teaching classes from home in the fall. I need to purchase a simple, barebones document camera to replace my "smartphone sitting on a stack of books" technique. Any recommendations? I'd prefer a unit that can work with Linux and MacOS.

I hope his return is a success. It was a lot of fun to watch him work. I wrote up a little analysis of "the pitch:"

    2020 NFL: Potential Rule Changes

Quick check: last year, 3 out of 30 onside kicks were recovered by the kicking team. Over the period 2002-2018, according to this article, the success rate on certain 4th-and-15 plays was somewhat higher: about 17%. I think that a 4th-and-15 play from scrimmage would be more exciting to...

    Live sports are back!!

In case anyone else looked at the picture of the player in yellow above and wondered, "Can that really be a 17-year-old?" -- no, it isn't. The picture doesn't show 17-year-old Gio Reyna, but 27-year-old Thorgan Hazard, who is taking Reyna's place.
