C's pick Aaron Nesmith #14 overall

Agree that TL is held to a weirdly high standard wrt defensive miscues. Even St. Defense Marcus Smart has been shitty by his standards this year, with lots of lapses like getting back-cut. And as you mentioned, Jaylen has been way below his on-ball standards.

    Analysis of Celtics Games (2020-2021)

He has looked good at times, awful at others, and looked good on D most of last year. The dude clearly has some between the ears issues going on, which is a bit surprising tbh.

What to Do, What to Do?

Cesar has a good point that I hadn’t thought of, which is that you could eat the big tax bill of adding another player in 2021-22, and then hope for Kemba either to opt out, or trade him as damaged when such a trade only costs you 1 1st (the rough going price for an expiring). That’s not nearly...

    Kemba 2021: The Jour-knee Begins

Agree, given that a competent starter probably has them in the Finals last year with this version of Kemba and the same roster (probably improved with TT+PP tbh). Anyone who thinks they’ve somehow gotten way worse hasn’t paid attention to how weird this year is through the whole East. The type...

C's pick Aaron Nesmith #14 overall

The pick is looking fairly solid. Hopefully we remember who here said to take note of his constant improvement on defense, and who here panicked.

    Kemba 2021: The Jour-knee Begins

It’s not so much a bridge year as much as it is that you can sort of cheat and acquire someone expensive this year and have both him and Kemba for the playoffs. I know the cool thing here is to give up after ~30 games, but this team should be going for it imo. It’s important to be realistic...

    Kemba 2021: The Jour-knee Begins

Kemba is looking more and more like, if he's managed correctly, he can be himself from deep and midrange when he gets his rhythm, and probably won't get to the paint in the same way. Given that Tatum's contract doesn't kick in until next year, they could go with something like this: - keep...

C's pick Aaron Nesmith #14 overall

At this point, any time the Celtics draft a long, athletic-ish 6-4+ guy I'm just going to assume he will become a good defender and sit in the corner. It's automatic. Re the spacing video above: I agree that the guy is way overstating his point. However, I do think that teams definitely pay...

    2020-2021 NBA Game Thread

Houston really really needs to tank this year to maximize odds of not conveying. Would significantly change franchise trajectory.

    Analysis of Celtics Games (2020-2021)

They played with a lot more offensive force in the first half. Everything was 10x more purposeful than it's been. Kemba did the best job of this imo. Nesmith being playable also has a trickle-down effect through the lineups.

All of their coaches and front offices should be fired! In all seriousness though, the short offseason is very clearly affecting these teams, and complicates evaluation of where they're at.

C's pick Aaron Nesmith #14 overall

This is starting to feel a lot like last year's episode of "Romeo", but with a shot.

What to Do, What to Do?

I’m extremely skeptical of “can’t compete with the Nets this season.” They definitely can’t compete with the Nets if the Nets stay healthy, Tatum/Brown don’t improve, and the Celtics don’t make any acquisitions. The recent history of the NBA suggests that none of those are sure things. When...

C's pick Aaron Nesmith #14 overall

He’s been a bit better than I expected when putting the ball on the floor, relative to his other struggles.

C's pick Aaron Nesmith #14 overall

Yeah, also with all the negativity people are ignoring that athleticism was a question mark for him coming in, and he has looked like a plus athlete on that end. Wrt shooting: he looks a bit more comfortable, but things are still clearly rushed and off a bit there. He honestly is looking more...

Stop hoarding TP(E) - the what should the Celtics do with the TPE thread

Yeah, there are just so many examples of teams successfully filling in role player vets around stars that you can’t let picks in the 20s stand in the way. Everyone knows how the LA teams are operating, but Utah is also a good example of this: they got Mitchell and Gobert in the draft, but the...

Stop hoarding TP(E) - the what should the Celtics do with the TPE thread

No. It's really hard for a center to be worth that kind of pick package. He is good enough offensively, and the contract is declining, that I'd be interested at a lower price point.

Stop hoarding TP(E) - the what should the Celtics do with the TPE thread

Isn't this a roundabout way of getting at the fact that Brown and Tatum are fringe All-NBA guys, not inner-circle stars, and you need/expect them to develop further to have a chance? Also (slightly contradictory)...with one more solid roleplayer, this exact team, worse Kemba and all, probably...

What to Do, What to Do?

In terms of Kemba, I'd trade him only if it's for major salary relief that lets you spend both by giving up assets for a young RFA, and then using the TPE for a role player or two. If you can't do that, and it's something like Kemba for Horford, you're saving a bit of money, but at the cost of...
