MLB Offseason 2020 News & Notes

That's totally fair. I was responding in part to comments upstream that his remarks were "racist", which I think is a bridge too far in this case. To your point: he seems like a mediocre GM and an unpleasant person, though, which is indeed sufficient grounds for removal.

MLB Offseason 2020 News & Notes

I'm going to be "that guy": reading the posted remarks, I find Mather's focus on English language skills unseemly. It probably merits some kind of probation, but I'm not convinced that it should be treated as a fireable offense. Being impatient with people who don't speak English fluently...

Confessions of a Confused Brady Follower

I did of course root for the DBacks, but it was a tough hang: Mickey Mouse franchise, crappy coach, embarrassing uniforms, assembled super-team ambitions. Sound familiar? Describing the dynamic to my wife an hour ago, I settled on the word “artificiality” to describe my feelings.

Confessions of a Confused Brady Follower

I finally figured out why I can’t root for the Bucs. It’s not about feeling jilted by Brady leaving and playing for another team. It’s that they remind me of the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks.

    NFL Coaching Carousel

I I just love the uncomfortable moment when he gets to the kneecap part, and it tilts perceptibly from “string of motivational cliches” to “uh oh, this guy is working through some personal issues”

    NFL Coaching Carousel

Here's his plan for the franchise— watch your knees! View: https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/30753733 "When you punch us back, we're going to smile at you. And when you knock us down, we're going to get up.... on the way back up, we're going to bite a kneecap off. Alright? And then we're...

    Dope Divisional NFL Game Thread

Sorry I'm late on the pile-on (was watching on tape delay), but... was watching the game with great interest until the end zone touchback, at which point I immediately turned off the broadcast and decided to do something else with my evening. Like: the rule is that bad.

    James Harden to Brooklyn

I haven't been monitoring Nets situations as closely as most in this thread, but I guess their thinking was, "With Kyrie AWOL, KD will bolt unless we bring in another superstar, and then this whole thing was for naught." In a weird way, if you just mentally eliminate Kyrie from the picture...

Confessions of a Confused Brady Follower

I'm in the "conflicted and confused" camp. I hold nothing against him— zero, nada— for leaving, and I fully expected to root for him heading into the season. Then, I started watching the games and found myself... glad?... at times when he and the team struggled. But why? To the best I can...

    Celebrating What Is

Just to indulge in this thought a bit further: what are the most shocking things a football genie could have told you in fall 2001 about the future Brady-Bellichek era? I would go, in reverse order... 6. That it will span 19 seasons 5. That, by the end, the franchise will be known for...

    Celebrating What Is

I’m probably the 800th person to point this out, but: next week will be the first meaningless, “season is officially already over” game the Pats have played since November 2000. Thanks for 20+ years of consistent relevance. Amazing.

    Tompa Bay: Tom Tom Club

What's the possible explanation for this anyway— the lack of pre-snap motion? I don't know enough Xs and Os to answer this with certainty. Is there a real tactical trade-off, where running motion would prevent Arians and Leftwich from implementing some of the looks and formations they want to...

The Game Ball Thread: Wk.12 vs Arizona

It was an annoying play in two respects: (1) the refs are all running along with the play, and so from their perspective, it seems like Jennings is “moving towards his own end zone” (as Winovitch says in his answer) although he had actually planted and stopped moving: (2) Jennings does the big...

    Tompa Bay: Tom Tom Club

I always assume that he’s trying to do the Bellichek thing, where you improve team culture by demonstrating that not even the star QB is above reubke... but that he’s doing it in a weirdly public, hamfisted way. That’s the only way I can make sense of how conspicuous some of his comments seem...

    2000: The Lost Year

I did a little double-take reading this thread, b/c I was sure I'd read something similar in the past. Here's the other take on the same subject: https://www.theringer.com/2017/8/9/16119282/new-england-patriots-belichick-brady-2000-team Edit: I'm a sucker for this stuff about the 2000 season...

Most exciting plays in Red Sox history (for the Casual Fan)

Alien understands things like, there are playoff series with game sevens that are exponentially more meaningful than regular season games. Alien also notices that fans and players are more excited by moments that happen in playoff games and is infected by that enthusiasm. Alien does not...

Most exciting plays in Red Sox history (for the Casual Fan)

As the poster who initiated this cheesy exercise, I'd say, yes, that's right. To put it a different way: imagine you had a reel of all-time Sox moments and you played them one after the other for someone who is steeped in Japanese baseball but knows nothing about MLB. Which moment would that...

Most exciting plays in Red Sox history (for the Casual Fan)

I just watched the Victorino slam again. Bonus entertainment points for the fact that it came on an 0-2 pitch (I'd entirely forgotten that) (Edit: whoops, covered directly above) the crazy ricochet the ball takes off the top of the wall into the billboard sign above Victorino's A+ reaction...

Most exciting plays in Red Sox history (for the Casual Fan)

If we're really running with the premise of "most exciting" (rather than most important), I'd nominate the Ellsbury's straight steal of home, although that's a different animal than all the playoff moments being nominated here.
