    2020-2021 NBA Game Thread

Imagine praising one of the greatest players to ever play the game. Such suck-ups. Isn't it a bit risky to tank to play the Mavs? They've been playing really well after a first 1/4 or 1/3 or whatever it was of the season when they sucked. Not that the Lakers would be chopped liver, but not...

The Poll: Is Wyc burning Brad- Should CBS be torched at season's end?

True. But that's not exactly a response to lovegtm's question.

I guess I'd take "absence" to mean absent from playing, specifically when referencing the team caring about "wins and losses." Does any one care if he's absent from the bench or not for whatever reason? Injured players are sometimes there/sometimes not -- not sure I've ever heard that has an...

    2020-2021 NBA Game Thread

A report where? On a Q Anon message board? This is pretty right on. Drummond was truly a weird choice to pursue by the Lakers. During the playoffs AD plays the 5, so at best Drummond will be a bit player. In the interim while they slide/have slid into the play-in, he still doesn't provide much...

I think it also reflects the playoff failures. Yes, I know it's a regular season award, but a lot of the early season support for LeBron (he was the frontrunner pre-injury), not sure why someone denied that) is that voters had been embarrassed by LBJ showing himself the clearly superior player...

I doubt anyone thinks it was expected or excusable.

Math in Basketball: Garbage or Not Garbage?

You mean, list OBP and slugging as is done on virtually every site that gives stats? I mean, here's a sample from an obscure site called ESPN: https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/splits/_/id/6389/ryan-zimmerman Well, there you go (and, sure, it adds them up to an OPS, too, which is kind of a...

In the minors, a major change as the Atlantic League plans to move the mound back a foot

A piece from Fangraphs with lots of good/interesting/inconclusive data: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-atlantic-league-will-experiment-again-this-time-with-the-pitching-distance-and-dh-rule/ Fair enough that after the Atlantic Lg experiment can speak to the impacts with more clarity.

In the minors, a major change as the Atlantic League plans to move the mound back a foot

I don't really know. My hope is they've gamed it out such that you are correct, but I also logically think that more balls in play would make it more like a softball game. Fun to watch in that lots of action, but also would tend to stretch out games since I think there'd be a lot hits per game...

In the minors, a major change as the Atlantic League plans to move the mound back a foot

Thank you! I really appreciate that they're trying to do something to address what is clearly an issue (boredom!). I'm not sure I see the logic in 61 feet making a difference, but is it too optimistic to assume they've done some studies in re how/why it'd reduce home runs? If all it does is...

The Poll: Is Wyc burning Brad- Should CBS be torched at season's end?

I very much agree with both of these quotes. He shouldn't be fired and he won't be fired. But it puzzles me that the "if they don't make the playoffs fire him" option doesn't have more support. That would take an utter collapse. Now it's 99.999% certain that won't happen, but it's an option in...

Absolutely to every word of this. See Simmons insanity on Drummond, but also all the ragging on Gordon H etc...the list goes on. I do think it's fair to rag some on a guy like Blake Griffin who seems (based on a couple of games) to have not been playing as hard in Detroit as he has debuted in...

Andrelton Simmons to refuse COVID-19 vaccine

My 2nd hand understanding from my partner/expert is that this is correct -- given the emergency approval, it can't be mandated. (I agree it should be -- Simmons can take a seat if he doesn't like it).

NBA Trade Deadline - Buyout Season Thread

In the 3 games I've seen him -- pretty much backed by stats -- he's looked like toast. But there is that thing about old vets -- in the right situation and with the right motivation and in limited minutes with a defined (narrow) role, I wouldn't be surprised if he can be helpful. We've seen it...

    Dick Stockton retires

Yep, the downward inflection doesn't work -- as others noted it can be chalked up to a shot, the build up, and just how fast it went out. By the time he was saying "if it stays fair"....all the viewers had seen it go out, so he spits out the "home run" element with the wrong inflection, as you...

    Dick Stockton retires

I love how little he talks during that call. Makes the call and then just lets there be silence for a good long time. Love that old school notion that you don't have to explain great moments.

NBA Trade Deadline - Buyout Season Thread

The puzzle on Lonzo is why the Pels seem to want to trade him so badly. He's a terrific complementary player and agree fully with what was said above -- his shot is steadlily improving and he's a terrific team defensive player and moves the ball incredibly quickly -- does a lot of things well...

    RIP Elgin Baylor

Yep, that was awesome Kliq...thx. And the clips of Baylor they've been playing -- holy shit a man among boys. So used to seeing old school players look like high schoolers compared to today's pros. Not at all in his case: his moves are f-ing insanely good. Looks like he'd be right at home in...
