    Match Week 1

Haaland looks like what happens when one of the varsity kids decides to scrimmage with the JV team. He's just so explosive. Are we allowed to praise his pace and power even though he's not Black?

    RIP Bill Russell

Not only is Russell the greatest winner ever, and not only was he perhaps an even better person than an athlete, but one of the most remarkable things about Russell is that he was a great winner in part because was a great person (obviously of course his outrageous athletic gifts helped too)...

2022 Top 125 Players Ranked in Tiers - The Athletic

Also of course the opponents are better in the playoffs, and better teams are going to more effectively exploit Jokic's defensive weaknesses.

2022 Top 125 Players Ranked in Tiers - The Athletic

I don't disagree but the case for Embiid over Jokic is defense. Embiid is an extremely impactful defensive player. Jokic is ... not, and his defensive limitations really limit what you can do schematically.

Spurs 22/23: You get a transfer, and you get a transfer, and you get a transfer...

Doesn't every high school team do wind sprints at the end of preseason practices? These guys are professionals. They'll be fine. The in-season issue is more lack of recovery time between matches, along with mental fatigue.

Report: USC and UCLA are planning to leave for the Big Ten as early as 2024

Sure, but if the current TV deals max out at ~$40-50 million per school, and a megaconference deal could double or triple that, it's going to be hard for anyone to say no. It takes a lot of alumni donations every year to make up that lost revenue.

Spurs 22/23: You get a transfer, and you get a transfer, and you get a transfer...

GLC's issue is that Conte's preferred 3-4-3 doesn't really have room for a midfield playmaker. GLC is probably not quite defensive enough to play in Conte's midfield two and doesn't offer enough attacking value to play in the front 3.

    2022 Tennis

It's amazing that Nadal was able to gut it out and beat Fritz. But if he couldn't continue it might have been better if Fritz had won or Nadal had retired so we'd get an actual semifinal match.

Report: USC and UCLA are planning to leave for the Big Ten as early as 2024

Isn't the appeal simply more money? Presumably the TV deal for a super conference would be much, much larger than the current deals.

The Arms (Errr, Legs) Race: 2022 Summer Transfer Window

Neymar's contract at PSG is supposedly something like 700k euros/week just in wages (not including other bonuses, etc.). Nobody else is going to pay him like that.

Also Richarlison seems like a high-risk/low-reward move at that price. The odds that he makes the leap at 25 and up his game to a new level he hasn't previously shown is pretty low. Yet for that amount of cash there's a lot of risk if he gets hurt or he continues on the downward trend from...

Spurs 22/23: You get a transfer, and you get a transfer, and you get a transfer...

Richarlison is ok in the abstract, but for that amount of money I feel like Spurs should be getting someone who goes straight into the first XI. It's a lot of cash for a squad player.

WCQ 2022: Qualifiers for Qatar's Questionable Quagmire

The one upside in terms of atmosphere is that the tournament is geographically concentrated. Rather than having fans from all of the countries spread out across 10-15 cities, basically everyone will be in Doha, which would be pretty cool if a) there were actual affordable...

The Arms (Errr, Legs) Race: 2022 Summer Transfer Window

npxg+xa/90 the last two years Raphinha: .46, .54 Richarlison: .37, .44 This despite the fact that Richarlison is really more of a true wide forward than an attacking midfielder/winger. Raphinha's passing/ball progression numbers are much better. My guess is that if you look at...

    Celtics vs. Warriors, NBA Finals

Part of the context there of course is that Smart is one of the most physical, handsy defenders in the league, and also one of the biggest floppers, and the Warriors players probably feel (rightly or wrongly) that Smart has been getting away with a lot. So when the Warriors get one over on...

    Celtics vs. Warriors, NBA Finals

Yeah this doesn't make any sense. Curry's regular season pull-up 3P% is not against drop coverage, because nobody plays drop coverage against a Steph PNR anymore (or has since like 2015). If teams played drop coverage against Curry, his pull-up 3P% would probably be higher since those shots...
