Grade the Red Sox trade deadline

Because the Sox are already through the ALDS. San Fran and Houston still have to win a division series.

ALDS 2021: Red Sox vs. Rays General Discussion Thread

I loved how the Yankees were decimated without LeMahieu but he never even mentioned JD.

Red Sox pitchers are getting high again

Anecdotally, I can never remember another Sox catcher in the past calling for as many (or as HIGH) high fastballs as Vazquez. I wonder if they have this data by catcher.

We Wish You Well Jackie Bradley Jr. (DFA 8.4.22)

Thanks for the memories Jackie. I had back surgery in early October 2018. Then I had a complication which hospitalized me flat on my back for over a week. I watched almost every game between every team that postseason and it really got me through. Jackie had a lot to do with that.

    2019-20 Offseason Discussion

Ha. Forgot you have to have tenure to be the arbiter of funny.

It does seem intuitive that the first (and maybe the start of the second) inning is the only time you can guarantee AHEAD OF TIME that a strong pitcher faces the heart (or at least top) of the lineup. Would prevent the situation of warming up your best relievers and having them sit again during...

    2019-20 Offseason Discussion

I'd guess the variance would come in more traditional "bullpen games" where you know your second pitcher, the erstwhile "starter," won't be going more than 3 or 4, resulting in more pitching changes in general. Some of those are likely to be during an inning to take advantage of matchups...

Whose Departure From the Sox Devastated You Most?

I always thought it was adjusted for each league individually? So he was 46% better than the average NL pitcher? ERA+ is comparable across league because it is normalized, but he'd have had much different stats pitching in the AL, even with the same ERA+. I guess we're both right but your...

Whose Departure From the Sox Devastated You Most?

If he's still pitching in the AL East? I think it was the right decision to let him go. His ERA+ in 2005 in the NATIONAL LEAGUE was 146. That is lower than every year he pitched with the Sox except '04. He was still a very good pitcher but was getting great pitcher money. Edit: That 2005...

Whose Departure From the Sox Devastated You Most?

I was 5 years old in 1986. My first season of really watching the Red Sox with my father. That Christmas I got the 1986 Topps set (potentially still reigning as the ugliest of all time) and coveted that Clemens like nothing else in my life. Clemens was my horse. I begged for a crappy old TV...

Betts/Price to LA for Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong

I agree they are underselling the import of resetting the CBT penalties, but his point, to me, is not entirely implausible. The Dodgers are only receiving one year of one of the best players in the game. One year at a near-market rate. Mookie is also on record stating that he wants to test...

Betts/Price to LA for Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong

I love how they accuse the Sox of dealing in bad faith. As if every leaked trade doesn't have the "pending physicals" clause attached. It is just sad how rare it is that two teams (heaven forbid three, or four if you add in the Angels) can keep a deal quiet until it is actually completed...

    Thank you Mookie Betts

    1. Pedro Martinez 2. Dustin Pedroia 3. David Ortiz 4. Mookie Betts Mostly I feel bad for my kids. My heart has long since shriveled and dried up, but theirs still beat with joy. "Of course, there are those who learn after the first few times. They grow out of sports. And there are others who...

    Betts/Price to LA for Verdugo/Jeter Downs/TBA

It's a valuable lesson. That being said, I hope X sticks around for a while because we're still on unstable ground turning him into a lifelong baseball fan. 2018 was a strong, strong factor. He woke up every morning and we watched the MLBTV recaps together of every playoff game. Need the Sox...

    Betts/Price to LA for Verdugo/Jeter Downs/TBA

Yep. Told my 7-year old this morning. His eyes went wide and he asked me, "who did we get?" And that's where it went bad. Then we had a long talk about free agency and Curt Flood and arbitration and team control and the salary cap. I think he got it intellectually, which actually surprised...

Who will be the next manager?

I can't answer the CBA question which is interesting as a thought experiment. But... It can't be Pedroia after the Apple Watch thing. Sorry. He's my favorite player in baseball history, but he's tainted and they cannot appear to be anything but 100% against any form of cheating.

    2018 Baseball Card Thread

I've been a collector since 1986. Like most collectors I've gone through many, many iterations of my collection. Things that used to get me excited like the '83 Topps Boggs and breaking wax just don't do it for me any more. I got into prospecting for a while and collecting autos and lots of...
