    Rafael Devers: post extension performance

I edited the original post with more pitch specific data and analysis.

    Rafael Devers: post extension performance

I think you missed the "if it's not corrected." If he adjusts and fixes the problem then clearly it's not going to get worse over time. My concern is that this may not be an issue that he can adjust to in a typical way. For example if it's an eyesight issue that's subtly effecting his pitch...

    Rafael Devers: post extension performance

Rafael Devers has had a strange season so far in 2023, and I thought it might be time someone started a thread to talk about it. Overall, Devers has not quite been himself this year. He is still hitting bombs, but his OPS+ (111) and wRC+ (108) are at their worst levels since his short 2020...

    5/24 The Question Was Asked

    This umpire is unbelievably bad.

    5/24 The Question Was Asked

What was Raffy thinking there? Serious BS from the ump. Shouldn't have that been an automatic ball even if he hadn't granted time? Pitcher threw before the batter was alert.

    Beat The Clock

@shaggydog2000, @absintheofmalaise Thanks to both of you. I had done the same comparison on fangraphs earlier in the year but the data seemed way off so I assumed there was some problem, as @simplicio pointed out above. @shaggydog2000 -- your comparison is much closer to the real data, I...

    Beat The Clock

Curious if there are any stats on total runs per game this year vs last at the same time. Unfortunately I don't have access to the Athletic or I'd just check myself!

    Red Sox sign Kenley Jansen

It's not just a routine blown save though. He gave up 3 runs, failed to record an out and looked utterly lost up there. He had also already pitched twice in a 3 day span. Given the combination of factors I think it's understandable that people think he should not have been sent out again without...

    The 2023 Injury Thread

If I had to guess I'd say that Story's arrival is actually going to make the lineup worse. In the current roster he pushes out Kike, Valdez, or Arroyo. He could theoretically displace Duran but unless Duran completely craters in the next couple weeks I don't think that's possible. I can't...

    2023 Starting Rotation

Chris Sale is looking OK and has generally been on an upward trend aside from his bizarre start against Baltimore where he somehow struck out nobody in 5 innings. Houck is a mixed bag. His FIP is trending better but he's been hit hard recently. His statcast page is a little weird. He is giving...

    Red Sox sign Masataka Yoshida

I know this is off topic, but I just want to say how disappointed I am that James Outman is a position player and Zach Pop is a pitcher.

Extreme Makeover: The Jarren Duran Edition

Statcast now has Duran at 85th percentile for OAA this year.

MLB suspends Trevor Bauer for 2 years with no pay

Yeah, that'd be closer to the version of it from MLB linked above where the "sword" is going to his right hip. I don't think that was his intention though as the clip of him doing it in a Japanese rehab start has him going to the left hip, which is at least a bit less incorrect (he still looks...

    Red Sox sign Masataka Yoshida

I'd say that it's not necessarily bad, per se, but it's a bit lazy and is stereotyping. It'd be like assuming that an American's ancestors were cowboys, Southern aristocrats, etc. Like, if you have specific knowledge that Yoshida is descended from a Samurai family then fair enough but I suspect...

MLB suspends Trevor Bauer for 2 years with no pay

Wow, if that gesture is intended to mimic sheathing a katana it's cringe on so many levels. Even doing it at all is deeply embarrassing, but if you're going to do it at least do a gesture that at least somewhat approximates the actual motion. His move is wrong on so many levels.

    What does 2023 look like?

I started typing a reply about how Devers is actually dragging a bit despite the power only to look up his March/April numbers from last year and find that his wOBA and wRC+ are actually better this year. He had a slow first month last year and then really took off as the season progressed...

    What does 2023 look like?

The schedule has been brutal so far, as @Heating up in the bullpen showed above. The Sox have had the toughest SoS in the game so far, so yeah I'd agree that a winning record is a success at this point. IMO they are playing better than expected given this context. May is a weaker schedule for...

Extreme Makeover: The Jarren Duran Edition

I don't think anyone realistically expects Duran to keep a 1.05 ops, but he really doesn't have to in order to be very valuable. An OPS of .850 would put him in the top tier of MLB CF offensively. His wOBA is only slightly lower than his xwOBA. His xwOBACON is stratospheric and clearly the...

    What does 2023 look like?

It's super early, but if he somehow manages to put up a better season than Betts, some folks are going to lose their minds!

    What does 2023 look like?

RPI does take into account opponent's SoS, so it's a little better than pure SoS. Still some autocorrelation problems but I don't think it should be completely dismissed.
