Your top "forgot he was a Red Sox"

Charles Johnson had an AAV lower than his contract, so at the end of the day, the Sox saved a little over a million on the luxury cap (important to them at that time) and the Rockies received a player they wanted. Win-win for both teams.

    Julio Lugo has passed away

Boston traded him for Chris Duncan, who sadly has also passed away in 2019 from brain cancer.

    2019-20 Offseason Discussion

A player's AAV doesnt change, unless his actual contract does. Myers signed a 6 year, $83M contract so his AAV is $13.83M each of the 6 years. If a team sends cash along with a player to pay his contract, they take a cap hit for 100% of that amount each year. If a team receives cash, they...

Pedroia has "significant setback with his left knee"

This is correct. If he retires he walks away from the money. Most likely scenario is Boston places him on the 60 day IL. Pedroia gets his money; Boston gets a 40 man roster spot back.

Players traded mid-season aren't eligible for a Qualifying Offer. Thus, we cant make one to Eovaldi.

World Series 2018--Red Sox vs. Dodgers

That's not a problem during the regular season, but its a bigger problem in the playoffs. The league has to approve removing someone from the roster after a review by an independent doctor. So if Pom pitches 4 innings in gamed 4 and then the Sox try to take him off the roster with "shoulder...

Have you ever seen an MLB no-hitter in person? (If not, how close have you come?)

The first major league game I ever attended turned out to be Matt Young's unofficial no hitter in Cleveland. He threw 8 no hit innings and didnt get a chance to finish it off since the Indians didnt have to bat in the bottom of the 9th.

Click the "+" sign above column AI and it will unhide all of the people expected to get under 5% (and in most cases, 0%). Damon is in there.

    The Craig Kimbrel Thread

I think he might have it with 3. Not only is he one of (I believe) 4 pitchers with multiple 4 K in 1 IP games, but it appears he is the first pitcher ever with 5 K in 1.1 IP.

    2017 MLB HOF ballot released

Thome: 612 HR, 956 OPS, 147 OPS+, 72.9 bWAR; no steroid allegations Sheffield: 509 HR, 907 OPS, 140 OPS+. 60.3 bWAR; tons of steroid allegations (plus "proof" in Game of Shadows) Thome is absolutely a HoFer. Probably first or second ballot, too.

    2017 MLB HOF ballot released

Really hard to say at this point whether is is Bonds/Clemens (started off weak, gaining votes every year) or Palmeiro (off the ballot in a few years). IMO, the two positive tests put him closer to Palmeiro as far as the mindset of the voters go.

    2017 MLB HOF ballot released

Which one of Chipper, Thome, and Rolen are you referring to? There are two clear HoFers in Chipper and Thome and a borderline one in Rolen. Not to mention the fact that many writers think there are more than 10 deserving people currently on the ballot (with guys like Mussina, Schilling and...

    2017 MLB HOF ballot released

Given the glut of talent currently on the ballot, along with the 10 vote limit, it would be a shame if only 2 people get in and we have Hoffman, Vlad, and Pudge all sitting between 70% and 74.9% heading into next year.

Bradley's new salary deserves a new thread

Staying under the LT is a short term goal, not a long term goal. They are virtually certain of going over in 2018: *Sale's option rent kicks in ($12.5M vs $6.5M cap hit now) *Kimbrel's option rent kicks in ($13M vs $10.5 cap hit now) *E-Rod goes to arbitration for the first time *Pomeranz...

    2017 MLB HOF ballot released

I think this will largely hold true. Keep in mind that after a deep ballot next next (adding Chipper, Thome, and Rolen), the following year has Mariano (along with borderline guys like Halladay, Helton, and Pettite) and then Jeter (with Konerno being the only borderline guy). Vlad and Hoffman...

    2017 MLB HOF ballot released

I'm not. If there wasnt a 10 vote limit, he'd easily get >5% and probably be on the ballot for the next 10 years. But (in my opinion, and the opinion of many others) there are 10 or more guys currently on the ballot who should be in the HOF, so it makes sense that Posada isnt getting votes when...

    Rusney Castillo's second half

Sandoval has enough service time to be able to reject the assignment to AAA and collect his contract, in full, which would count against the luxury tax.
