Tito Francona To Be New Reds Manager

It's an exciting young team, and a steady hand might be just what they needed. I'd assume if Terry knew he was open to coming back, he could have pretty much had his pick from open jobs. I wonder whether Votto is open to some kind of coaching role.

There are 2 more weeks until the trade deadline

The Mariners just put him on outright waivers. He seems to me like a prime candidate to see if a change of scenery can spark something.

    If you were a ballplayer...

In real life, I was basically the Bobby Dalbec of a d3 college team. So the ceiling if I had trained harder and put a lot more time in and maybe had a little more talent is probably the Bobby Dalbec of a d1 team?

Shohei Ohtani’s attorneys accuse interpreter of ‘massive theft’ tied to alleged gambling

Ya, I think the only way Ohtani's story, and story change, make sense is something like the following: Mizuhara comes to Ohtani and tells him he needs help. Maybe he convinces Ohtani that the bets that accrued the debt were legal, maybe he tells him the debt came from something else. In any...

Remaining Free Agent Speculation and Signings (Trades, too)

I've been thinking about this comparison a lot. Personally, I am extremely happy the Red Sox have followed the path they have this offseason over the Giants path. The Giants will finish 4th in their division, and probably finish with 5-6 teams ahead of them in the WC standings. If they keep this...

    Dylan Cease traded to Padres

Thorpe could probably immediately step in as the White Sox #3 or 4 starter. Do they immediately plug him in, or give him a month in AAA to get used to the organization? Edit: man, actually, if he breaks camp he wouldn't be a terrible bet to be their best starter this year. It's rough over there.

The Ballad of Andrew Bailey: Will the harvest come in?

It also seems like there is a confound in that draft statistic if teams are more willing now to spend that draft capital on a player they simply wouldn't have drafted in previous years due to the injury. The number drafted in the top 10 can increase even if the number in the pool is basically...

What if you could change one thing - Red Sox edition

Ya, this is it for me too. Besides the obvious reasons, this thread has also made me think about my fandom a bit more I'm almost 40 now, so I was 20 in 2004. Old enough that it was a true catharsis and the defining moment of my baseball fandom, but too young that I could have experienced 86 or...

    Theo’s back????!!!!

Maybe not that, but he might ne able to, for example, convince the owners that there is a different system for pre-arb/arb players that is actually in everyone's interest in an upcoming CBA, instead of having them dig in their heels on any change that would not obviously count as a win for them...

    Offseason rumors

This is something I assume and hope Breslow and co are all over. Given the emphasis on pitching and the fact that they have brought in defense-first catchers for the minors, reportedly to help sustain pitcher development, I'd have to guess they have strong opinions on pitch framing. I wonder if...

    Theo’s back????!!!!

Probably, and this is likely just daydreaming, but: the reason I love the idea of Theo as commissioner is that I think he is probably the only person on the planet with the credibility and fan support that he could maybe break out of that dynamic and do what he thinks is right, at least sometimes.

    Offseason rumors

Yup, and there have been minor league deals (that may not amount to material improvement). Also, I suppose I should have said "rebuild the farm and stockpile of young, cost-controlled players", but I didn't bother since I see these goals as working so closely in the same direction.

    Offseason rumors

Ya. In fact, I think it's been pretty clear they have been rebuilding since they hired Bloom in the first place, just not a full-tank rebuild. Since 2019, the priorities have been (in order of importance): 1. Rebuild the farm 2. Stay on the fringes of contention (without sacrificing future...

    Offseason rumors

There is a possible "pure baseball" reason they might end up well below the threshold this year: If they want at least a certain amount of salary room to play with in 25-26, they need to make sure the commitments out that far are low enough. If, then, The people who are actually willing to take...

    Offseason rumors

I do think they should be willing to pay most of his salary if it gets them a good prospect back (especially one near MLB ready). But I also see no reason to read that report in a way that rules that out, instead of "they are reluctant to pay any salary for the returns they have been offered."...

    Offseason rumors

Fangraphs has them 11th - I know they are still in the process of offseason updates, which is why I added that hedge. 4th is a lot better, but I think the point remains that it will be a hard rebuild if they have 4/5 albatross contracts to drag along.

    Offseason rumors

It's fun to think about, but I think the problem is that Tatis is the only one of those big contracts who is not yet over 30 and declining. Their farm system is middling (as far as I can tell), and with all that money on aging guys, selling Tatis would be the start of a very long and likely very...

    Offseason rumors

Cooper is more interesting than I had realized. Even with his abysmal year overall last year, he put up a 101 wRC+ against lefties. His OF defense has actually been fine up until last year, so that might be a fluke. Not a large sample though. Either him or Solano really might be better fits (if...

    Offseason rumors

I'm game for a bit of semantics, even when it seems to (somehow) be so fraught: "I expect it to X" does carry different implications than "it will probably X". It's a much more definitive statement, and people really don't use these words in real life in ways that fit Bayesian calculus or...

    Offseason rumors

This is true, as far as actually getting production out of 2b. Grissom is not a sure thing. But I do think it's fair to say that 2b is "solved" in the sense that it's not an area in need of being addressed anymore. Between Grissom and Valdez with Yorke possibly coming up, and one or two of...
