Misremembered Greatness on the Red Sox

I always wondered why Morton never got another shot in Boston. As a 22 year old rookie lefty in '91, he had fifteen starts - seven good to decent, five meh, and three horrific. A second look now shows that he followed that with a 2-12 campaign in Pawtucket. But on the '92 team that was...

Misremembered Greatness on the Red Sox

I might get crap for this, but Marty Barrett wasn't nearly as good as I thought as a kid. Sure, he kicked ass in the '86 playoffs, and in my eyes he was the "quintessential number two hitter". But he only had two seasons at the plate that could even be considered mediocre, and his numbers...

Outs from somewhere: the 2025 bullpen

Thinkin' Back, Color Me Badd had nine Top 40 hits and twelve total charted singles. They did it All 4 Love.

Outs from somewhere: the 2025 bullpen

Wink was also pitching through an injury all season, so I'm not sure his '24 results are particularly meaningful.

Outs from somewhere: the 2025 bullpen

I think you're underestimating Weissert. From June 28-July 28 he had an 8.53 ERA. For the rest of the season, his ERA was a tick over 2.00, and his FIP remained fairly steady even with that bad month, so it may just have been small sample size noise. He also ended the season with 16 straight...

You mean guys who hit .125 with one homer in the 100 plate appearances prior to that game? The Sox are loaded with those.....

Ignominious history watch: Will the White Sox have a 120 loss season?

Maybe, but that was when the Sox roster was at its peak of flotsam and jetsam. Refsnyder and Wong were hitting third, Dom Smith hit cleanup, Dalbec was playing every day, Westbrook, Valdez, and Cooper were getting consistent at bats. It was pretty lucky that they were able to split with a bad...

Anyone who doesn't listen to 93.7 during games is missing out. Sean McDonough has made it must-listen radio.

    The value of being "competitive"

Maybe off topic, but it's been pointed out elsewhere that Lugo's numbers have been massively pumped by fattening up against the historically bad White Sox and the Tigers, who are pretty awful outside of their 9-1 record against said White Sox. Move him into the AL East and you have Jeff Suppan...

August: Red Sox discussion and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

Despite a few hiccups, the bullpen is still fourth in the AL in WAR and eighth in both FIP and xFIP. What's killed the relievers is bad luck and bad defense - only the White Sox have a higher reliever BABIP. I'm not convinced the issues are entirely related to the arms.

August: Red Sox discussion and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

I may be alone on this, but the part that scares me the most is six games against that absolute pain in the ass Rays team.

Will you ever root for Duran again?

I didn't say that. I don't remember because I wasn't taking notes and doing other things during the game that divided my attention. But you could absolutely hear his voice in the crowd mike throughout a large portion of the game.

Will you ever root for Duran again?

I don't remember what was said, but you could clearly hear the guy on the crowd mike for most of the game.

Yes it is. Did you have another term in mind?

Will you ever root for Duran again?

So the measured, "small sample size" that SOSH consistently preaches when analyzing a team gets thrown out the window and you defend someone just because he attends a single game that doesn't produce the desired results? Or even a three game series? Ragging on Duran for a bad game is not...

Will you ever root for Duran again?

Absolutely. Sports is a live entertainment business. If the idiot can't conduct himself appropriately, he's gone, just like any other entertainment venue. HE was the antagonist, not Duran, and again while Duran's choice of words was despicable, it has to be taken into account that it was a...

Will you ever root for Duran again?

No. Sports is a live entertainment business. You can attend with the intention of being entertained and offering constructive criticism - that's a fan - or you can attend with the intention of being a disruptive, obnoxious asshole, which is what this person did. That's not a fan. That's...
