The 2025 Boston Red Sox and The Concept of a Six Man Rotation

I feel like this literally comes up every single year, and I don't think any team has implemented it for more than a couple turns through a rotation, for all the reasons we've discussed over the years. Nothing personal @TrotNixonRing but I'd be pretty shocked if this came to pass; they're just...

Is it Time to Move Devers to DH?

Yeah, I get that, but at the same time the results are what they are, the guy has not been able to stay on the field for the Sox. But it's kind of like some of the Sale injuries that were freak things that aren't predictive of his overall health. Falling off a bike doesn't mean you're inherently...

Is it Time to Move Devers to DH?

No one is saying that. Mookie has played 122, 142, 152, and 116 games the last four seasons. Story has been utterly unreliable for three of the last four seasons. It's a totally disingenuous comparison and it's completely reasonable to be concerned about his ability to stay on the field as he ages.

Cy Young winner Chris Sale thread

I mean, I think it's definitely as much age as anything. His age 39 and 40 seasons were very, very good. The wheels finally fell off this year at 41, an age that almost no one gets to. I think he only made less than 27 starts 4 times (not counting 2005). That's about as durable as you could...

Juan Soto in Boston-Yay or Nay?

Would love it if he was on the team, but agree that we also really need to solve the pitching situation too. Though, given how the offense has looked the last month-ish (doubleheader games notwithstanding), he would clearly be a great guy to have in the lineup.

The Future of Alex Cora in Boston

Sorry, yes, that's totally reasonable. The alignment you mentioned certainly had the potential to be solid, at the very least.

The Future of Alex Cora in Boston

Rant away! I'm with you. I like having some flexible guys — Brock Holt was an extremely useful player! But having a lot of guys who aren't very good at a lot of positions ain't it. We've seen three years of that crap and it's not working.

September: Red Sox discussion and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

I think that it might be as simple as "just because things didn't work out this particular time doesn't mean the overall plan is a bad one?" Granted, I have NO idea if that's true! We obviously hear a ton about pitchers flaming out, but I do feel like it's a risk you sometimes have to take. Of...

September: Red Sox discussion and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

I guess Buchholz is technically the last one, since he made his debut in 2007. I was surprised to realize he played 10 seasons in Boston, albeit with a ton of mediocrity and injury-plagued seasons in there. But we haven't even got another guy like him, much less someone like Lester who was a...

The Future of Alex Cora in Boston

I agree that at least some of it is, and this isn't rocket science, but we're looking at three seasons of players playing out of position. For whatever reason, Bloom just did not seem to prioritize getting guys who could actually field their positions and it has bit them in the ass three years...

Cy Young winner Chris Sale thread

I know what you mean but I think that's just baseball, particularly pitching. It's really freaking weird. His 2019 was not nearly as bad as it looks by ERA, though. FIP of 3.39 and WHIP of 1.09 aren't amazing, but they're certainly decent enough. Ah, but he did give up a ton of HRs. For my...

Game thread from Sweden for the day after Labor Day(?)

Well, that didn't work. Really fucking tired of this team just completely folding down the stretch years and years in a row.

Game thread from Sweden for the day after Labor Day(?)

Well, we're basically playing out the string. The best time for me to start game threads. I'm in Sweden, traipsing around Scandinavia for the next month, working a bit and vacationing a bit as well. Not going to catch many games because of time zones, but I will start the thread for this one, at...

September: Red Sox discussion and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

Yup, for a while the pitching was ruining everything. Now, they haven't given up more than 5 runs (and that many only once) since the D-Backs game on 8/25. 9 games, a 3-6 record. Ugly stuff.

Tracking the Main WC Contenders - Final 30 Games

Losing two against Detroit is a pretty big blow. I just don’t see any evidence this team has what it takes to make the kind of run they’ll need.

    Another game of baseball!

You called it! In a very up and down season for Bello, this is something to look back at with big positivity. Huge confidence builder I wager. Love to see it.

Rich Hill signs a AAA deal with Boston

Yes! I thought the same thing when he was rumored to rejoin the Sox. Staving off old age for one more year.

    The value of being "competitive"

I get that... but, we're headed to literally the same season again. The Sox are actually worse this year than they were last year through the same number of games, I think?

    The Homefield disadvantage

I do think that some of the horribleness of those seasons is the fact that in all of the last three seasons, the team has seemed in decent shape as late as, well, around now. But August gets ugly and September ends up being a disaster, and seeing a team that was seemingly doing OK completely...

    Rafael Devers: post extension performance

Wow, that's a great burn from Passan. I appreciate anyone who stands up to trolls like that.
