Next Coordinators - who do you want?

No, no, bullshit. I want a coordinator who will literally force fumbles and highpoint errant passes. We don't have the time or the roster to get an entire defense up to speed on this shit.

Ready, willing and Vrabel: a Mike (linebacker) thread

Between Johnson and Vrabel, I'd choose the latter. Every couple of years a new young OC comes along, and every couple of years one of these guys graduates to an HC role and underwhelms. I'd rather lock in the HC and then try to find our own young OC. I'm not interested in McDaniels, who was a...

    FLASH POLL

I think that was Bum Phillips. Mayo is just terrible. Maybe he grows into a good head coach, but we don't have time to wait. Or at least I'm not interested in waiting. Edit: It was Phillips talking about Bryant!

Hold the Mayo? Evaluating Patriots coaching.

And it's not like there's an obvious candidate for interim head coach. AVP? Covington, a first-time DC? Pass. (Though I agree Mayo's doesn't look ready for the job.) Note: Too late.

Are the Pats the worst team in the NFL?

This past off season, the Pats seemed to have some difficulty giving their $$$ away to high-priced free agents. This would be a good remedy...

FLASH POLL: Who should start on Sunday--Maye or Brissett?

Should have clarified that I'd start Maye if he's ready. I think he's ready enough... There are a half dozen externalities that say we should start him (e.g., PR). But sure, these don't matter much. My main concern is Lazar's comment that the locker room is "teetering on mutiny" because Jacoby...

FLASH POLL: Who should start on Sunday--Maye or Brissett?

Went with Maye. We brought in Jacoby to get the rebuild underway, mentor Maye, and run a professional operation for the players and slate of new coaches. This has been an utter failure. Each week that passes brings us more ridicule, the rebuild has ground to a halt, Lazar uttered the word...

Are the Pats the worst team in the NFL?

The rebuild doesn't begin until Maye takes the field. We suffered through last season and earned the #3 pick, but no good can be expected while all that value is holding a clipboard. MRR: The ship be sinking. Reporter: How far can it sink? MRR: Sky's the limit. It's time for Maye.

    And a captain, no less.

Are the Pats the worst team in the NFL?

What was disappointing for me was the seeming lack of effort. If the Pats are going to succeed this season, it won't be because of our talent or game planning. It will be because they'll play hard for Mayo. If that doesn't happen consistently, then I'm not sure what we have.

    Week 3: Patriots at Jets

This feels like a Matt Patricia offense.

    Patriots Training Camp 2024

I can squint and see some of that, too, but I don't see how the OL gets to average. Maybe below average and yet not a disaster, but this group remains the team's Achilles heel. Also, I can't go with you on Tyquan. Just, no.

    Maye-day Every Day

I don't subscribe to PFF, but here's what's available for free, from last season: T Brown: 579 snaps, 2 penalties, 3 sacks, 80.2 rating C Okorafor: 436 snaps, 8 penalties, 2 sacks, 60.4 rating V Lowe: 476 snaps, 2 penalties, 6 sacks, 41.7 rating Chuks is roughly the average of Brown and Lowe...

    Maye-day Every Day

This is sound logic, but a counter argument is that it's difficult to accurately evaluate rookies, and particularly a rookie QB. Could be that no number of practices and preseason action will tell us whether Maye is really better than Brissett, who is probably a top 30 QB in the league and an...

    Maye-day Every Day

Yeah, this is persuasive. But I do think bad teams can break players (not you, Mac). I mean, it's hard to argue the counterfactual, but Sam Darnold, to me, is a real cautionary tale. That guy had skills.

    Maye-day Every Day

To narrow the discussion, I believe what's on the table is (1) starting Maye in Week 1 vs (2) waiting to start him until Week 6 or so, at which point we've probably figured out what our best O line is. If someone's suggesting we bubble wrap Maye for the entire season, I guess I missed it.

    Maye-day Every Day

Speculating about how the world will be in 3 months is different from speculating about how it will be in 15. Maye needs to be thrown to the wolves eventually. Just don't think that should happen in Week 1 ... no matter how many no look passes he completes in unpadded 7x7 drills.

Even if the O line sucks? Like, really sucks?

    Maye-day Every Day

Yes, my read is that Maye has had a few nice moments during 7x7 but is getting mauled -- as is Brissett -- in 11x11. I see no reason why we'd start him against live defenses. He won't be effective, and he'll probably get injured.

    Arif Hasan Q&A

Thanks, Arif, for spreading some wisdom. Question: How seriously should we take any consensus board? I assume we're referring to the consensus of talking head analysts and scouting services, i.e., not the teams themselves? Given that each team has a better understanding of its needs and how...
