Much like Newman, the Sox are not “Ready to deliver”– The 2025 Offseason News (& rumors?) Thread

Yeah, I’ve been a big Devers fan ever since he hit that rookie HR off of Chapman and have been bullish about his defense improving over time. (It hasn’t.) I guess all the Bregman/Arenado talk and the need to upgrade defense at 3B has gotten to me.

This may be heresy, but is anyone else sorta regretting Devers’s extension? “Face of the franchise” aside, $313.5M /10 years seems expensive for a soon-to-be DH-only.

If Romy is better than Arenado, then StL would jump at a Romy-for-Arenado trade if only to save money.

Well, before the DH era, where else could you play sluggers who are poor fielders?

Is Devers’ defensive deficiency his range or his arm (or both?) If it’s his throwing accuracy, then he might be a good 1Bman.

Is there any actual news on the status of Yoshida's recovery from shoulder surgery?

Thought experiment: If Yoshida were a FA right now, what kind of contract would he get?

Much like Newman, the Sox are not “Ready to deliver”– The 2025 Offseason News (& rumors?) Thread

Re bolded -- Arenado's fielding being "average to good" -- Baseball Savant ranked him 3rd best fielding 3Bman in 2024, after Chapman and Ortiz, based on Outs Above Average. If that's correct, he'd be a huge defensive upgrade over Devers, who ranked 37th. Arenado's bat may be failing, but he's...

    SoSH Temperature Check: Bregman

Right. The OF is either Duran-Rafaela-Abreu (with a little Refsnyder mixed in) or Anthony-Duran-Abreau. If Yoshida plays any innings in LF something’s gone terribly wrong.

Grissom learning LF makes no sense to me. There's already enough depth in the OF.

The idea is for Alonso to DH, which means… https://www.si.com/mlb/red-sox/boston-red-sox-news/red-sox-outside-the-box-idea-to-add-prominent-slugger-to-lineup-pat3 But Bregman at 3B creates a similar problem. If Devers is the primary DH, what does Yoshida do?

If not Bregman, (and I hope not Bregman,) then Alonso on a short deal? https://www.si.com/mlb/red-sox/boston-red-sox-news/red-sox-outside-the-box-idea-to-add-prominent-slugger-to-lineup-pat3

I'm a fan of Vlad, but not to the extent that I'd get rid of Casas at 1B. And we already have a poor fielding corner infielder destined to DH.

    Fenway Fest Updates

FWIW, this has been on Mayer’s Sox Prospects page for as long as I can remember: Mayer is bigger and slower than most shortstops, so the top question surrounding him is whether he'll play the position on a long-term basis in the Majors. He compensates for below-average speed with a quick first...

The Conductor: who should Breslow haul to Boston this winter?

Mayer may not be MLB ready but I wouldn’t say he’s blocked at SS. Mayer at SS and Story at 2B works. Edit: That said, I think Mayer ends up at 3B.

Rob Refsnyder doesn’t get enough love. He’s a perfectly acceptable platoon bat to pair with Yoshida.

The Red Sox were 9th in runs scored in all MLB, but top 3 in the AL. Not a 1974-75-level offense, but not bad.

If it’s Duran, Rafaella, and Abreu in left, right and center, who makes way for Anthony when he one’s up? Nice problem to have.
