    Let’s Talk Pasta

Good Thread. I think Pasta will go down as an all time bruins great but I do think there is a large part of the fanbase/city that isn't enjoying it while it's happening. He's the best goal scorer this team has had since Esposito. That was over 40 years ago. He will finish this year with ~...

    Bruins Acquire Andrew Peeke

Anytime you can soak up the cap increase with one of the worst players in the NHL, you gotta do it. Sweeney does a lot of things well but this "hes big, plays pk" bullshit will always hurt his teams. This player sucks.

    2024 NHL Trade Deadline Thread

I think 13 of the 16 playoff teams last year used LTIR. The cat is out of the bag with this thing. Vegas and Tampa have been the most egregious, but use of LTIR "until the playoffs" is rampant.

Brayan Bello signed to a 6 year, $55 million extension

It used to be us. I'd get love for my sox hat when I was down there. Alas.

Sox trade John Schreiber to KC for minor league right-hander David Sandlin

This is unnecessarily negative. They have 4 arms that can likely replicate Schreiber's impact on the current team, 2 of which they lose if they don't roster them. This was they control how they lose one of those arms.

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

To the bolded: MLB Pipeline: 26 Baseball America: 31 ESPN: 29 Law is a bit more sour on some of the fringy guys at the back half (for good reason, I think) but not in such a way as to make him a serious outlier. Pitching is short in the minors right now.

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

well my post was in regards to the run of posts on offseason farm system rankings, which are by definition, fixed point in time interpretations. the argument I’m making is I think the narrative isn’t lining up with the contextual reality of pitching in the minors across the industry. the...

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

There has been a pretty significant readjustment of the major publications rankings of the Red Sox system and its almost universally qualitative. I think pipeline was first to say out loud that their ranking dropped significantly because of the lack of pitching prospects and it looks like Kiley...

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

Yes, but the point is not to compare the two but rather to say that we aren't talking about a guy who would normally be looking at a payday like this if not for a postseason run and massive scarcity on the free agent market.

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

this isn’t necessarily part of this conversation but that starter ERA is within 1/10th of a run of Montgomerys xERA over the past three seasons. I get the gnashing of teeth over the comments this weekend but continuing to cite Montgomery as the reason feels like a bridge too far to me. Guys...

The Fallacy of the Anthony/Mayer/Teel "Window"

I don't know man, I don't find historical rankings all that compelling. Every study shows wild variance outside of the top 10. While I agree there is probably something there, it's probably evidence of the lack of efficacy of using rankings as a predictor of future success rather than evidence...

Lucas Giolito signs 2 year, 38.5M contract with Red Sox (opt-out after 1 year, potential 3rd year option)

This was a key part of the conversation to me. I don't think he's willing to give up on getting a huge bag in free agency because he confidently believes he's still that guy. I don't really blame him for that. He was also very earnest in this conversation and I think if he pitches well, and...

Lucas Giolito signs 2 year, 38.5M contract with Red Sox (opt-out after 1 year, potential 3rd year option)

I have a lot of belief in Andrew Bailey. The performance of the pitching staff relative to their general quality was very impressive. It's difficult to give him all of the credit but there are some encouraging performance indicators. rank by year xFIP: 2023 - 2nd 3.86 2022 - 4th 3.63 2021 -...

    Offseason rumors

I think we are all dying for the seratonin boost the Sox making a move would give us but I can’t get super upset about imanaga. I’ve watched all the pitch shaping videos and read all the articles and he’s intriguing. The data on his fastball is really exciting and with some changes in...

    Offseason rumors

I would imagine if Baltimore were looking to acquire pitching with young player capital, it would be for someone with more control given how cheap they are. Cease isn't going to be particularly cheap and if he's good, will be looking for a contract going forward that I can't even imagine that...

McAdam: “Full Throttle” may mean business as usual

Thanks. I think it would be reasonable to wonder, but then the next step would be to look at who the most valuable pitching assets are that haven't yet emerged. If you look at the MLB pipeline top 100, it definitely doesn't show great evidence to invest early in pitching. I'll point you to...

McAdam: “Full Throttle” may mean business as usual

I’ve posted about this multiple times but this isn’t a Red Sox thing it’s an industry thing. Most of these guys were drafted and signed before 2020 and have emerged as useful in their mid 20s. The league as a whole has shrunk the amount of resources spent on drafting pitchers early...

McAdam: “Full Throttle” may mean business as usual

Man I hate myself for defending Kluber, but I don’t think this is true. I’ve attached the savant summaries for his 2022 and 2023 seasons and there is substantial evidence of collapse. 2022 was pretty effective controlling the strike zone and limiting dangerous contact. All of that was gone in...

McAdam: “Full Throttle” may mean business as usual

I had moved on when I said "believe what you want, I guess." It's clear that you're set in your opinion and no evidence short of paying $30m a 31 yo pitcher will change your opinion, but I think you would need a lot of precedent on the free agent market where similar players were getting...
