The Pantheon of Boston announcers: Who you got?

#1 Fred and Derek were my favorite duo. I knew nothing about hockey at the time, but they made me want to watch it. Derek talking about fights and roughing in such a low key way always made me laugh. #2 Sean and Remy were better than #3 Don and Remy and I loved version 2.0 even if it felt...

Red Sox, Ceddanne Rafaela agree to contract extension

I keep hearing Rafaela is defense only, but he is also a 6 tool baserunner which isn't nothing. JBJ was a smart baserunner who got the most of his average speed, but Rafaela adds a lot more value in that aspect which is also baked into his high floor. Granted he'll need to get on base first.

What Was The Red Sox Starting Lineup For Your First Home Opener in Person?

Valentin had just come off an 8.3 bWAR season too. Led all position players but he finished 9th.

Red Sox, Ceddanne Rafaela agree to contract extension

He's not locked into "we've gotta play this guy everyday" type money, so they can use him as a super utility guy (unlikely for a while) and proceed with team building how they'd like down the road. If he hits well enough to start, it's a bargain. If not, they'd be paying a few mill for someone...

    Larry Lucchino dead at 78

    Larry Lucchino dead at 78

As much as I detested D&C in the mornings, I tuned in for his weekly appearances. He took every pointed question and criticism they asked him fully in stride with no defensiveness and was leagues better than Sam Kennedy, the dentist, Werner and Henry in giving at least some information. It...

When Is It Okay To Worry About Triston Casas: An Attempt at the Reverse Jinx

He has also been facing really good sliders against really good pitching in a terrible hitting environment and has already had 5 balls called strikes on him this season.

Unrest in the MLBPA: Players move to oust union’s No. 2

Anything that results in Scott Boras getting neutered would be fine with me. At least he's getting up there in age (71) but he'll probably work until he drops dead.

    The Newest Vaughn

This is more of an amusement than being reactionary but the total fWAR combined from every player to man 2b since 2018 is 2.3. Story 2.6 Holt 2.5 Iglesias (lol) .8 Arroyo .7 Reyes .5 And then 15 guys near or below replacement level. An average season or three from the same second baseman will...

    Offseason rumors

I was going to go with Devern Hansack but was a few years off.

How much better can we get by just not playing stupid?

Some interesting team stats from baseball reference. The Sox were: 11th in run scoring percentage (amount of times a baserunner reached and eventually scored) 12th in stolen base percentage Only attempted to steal 3rd 7 times and not caught once. 10th fewest pick offs 20th on bases taken...

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

That and the guys he spent real money on have been underwhelming.

    Offseason rumors

Ya, I'm not really upset either. I can't stand watching guys who k 30% of the time anyhow. If they move on to Soler I'm fine with it, but these guys are just placeholders anyhow if Anthony is ready next year.

    Year Two Yoshida

They could also start him when they have groundball types on the mound. It would take a bit of work but it would be interesting to see if there was a correlation last season.

    Year Two Yoshida

I don't think there is a chance and it would be foolish to move on from him without reestablishing whatever value a not cheap DH would have as it's basically JDM-lite. Breslow certainly wouldn't care about moving on from Bloom guys. I also think he'll bounce back a bit. His plate discipline was...

So long, Framingham Lou (and other WEEI discussions)

I actually thought Gresh wasn't bad when paired with Keefe since he was more of a straight man, than a hot take guy. Banishing Keefe to PM was some kind of terrible decision. He really is their best talent by far. I can navigate through the Greg Hill show when Wiggy only speaks a sentence or...

    The Newest Vaughn

Interesting that Fangraphs views him more as an FV 45. I'm happy they moved on from Chris Sale, and got a major league ready guy. I just wish defense was prioritized for once. If they are stuck with Story and his contract and Mayer is up in the next season or two, then are you really going to...

Lucas Giolito signs 2 year, 38.5M contract with Red Sox (opt-out after 1 year, potential 3rd year option)

His contract is very unlikely to affect 2025. Currently, with their commitments, they would be 125 mill under the threshold. Their ARB guys also aren't going to be too expensive and they have at least 5 pre arb guys who will probably be worth hanging onto. That's also not factoring whatever...

Lucas Giolito signs 2 year, 38.5M contract with Red Sox (opt-out after 1 year, potential 3rd year option)

This one's a B- to me. They don't have anyone in the minors who I'd feel comfortable replacing those innings with despite his poor season. And they have put themselves in a position to have to pay a lot of money for mediocrity. But if he's good, then maybe they compete for a playoff spot...

What Happens Next if They Sign Teoscar?

The fangraphs write up has me a little less nervous about a potential signing due to improvements made to his defense. I just don't enjoy personally watching batting profiles like his and Duvall's since they can collapse at any time. 21. Teoscar Hernández, OF, Age 31 "Ben’s Take I’m not sure...
