The Pantheon of Boston announcers: Who you got?

Down homey phrases for sure, but he was pretty frank with his assessments of what was going on with the team, especially in the years Haywood Sullivan was dismantling it. The White Sox version of The Hawk would not have been well received in Boston.

The Pantheon of Boston announcers: Who you got?

The Ken Harrelson who did color for the Red Sox was pretty good and even better if you compare him to the Ken Harrelson who had, in name only, the same job for the White Sox.

2024 Lineup (What we actually have - no trade speculation.)

    1. Regardless of who the error was charged to, that's a very shitty throw. A MLB outfielder grabbing a ball at that depth in the outfield is supposed to be able to hit a cutoff man standing more than 60 feet away from home plate. It's short and not straight. Yes, Casas probably should be...

    If you were a ballplayer...

My glove won 6 or 7 games my senior year in high school. We had a kid pitcher who had a terrible glove (his family didn't have much money and what they did have went towards a real nice catcher's mitt, where he was supposed to play when not pitching), so he used mine. I was the statistician...

The Pantheon of Boston announcers: Who you got?

Too many people to evaluate, been listening/watching games since 1960. Some general comments, however. 1. Gowdy's work was good (or very good) enough to put him in a network role for many years, but when I think of him, I think of a pretty long and bad stretch of Red Sox baseball. Many...

    2023-2024 General NBA Season Thread

Opens up playing time again for Duncan Robinson? Oh, yes, I forgot. He's dead. Jaylen Brown killed him a few weeks ago.

    The Krafts

"Initially, Kraft had hoped to move into the new stadium by 2001—two full seasons and about 20 months away. Now, the state was indicating that 2002 seemed more likely. " ...Imagine if the Tuck Rule Game in January, 2002 had been the last Patriots' game in Massachusetts!

    Jack Edwards to retire

In this day and age, which job pays better? At least in my case, radio listening to Boston games is almost non-existent.

    Carl Erskine, RIP

Some pitcher named Fred Kipp as well, at least Baseball Reference doesn't have him dead. 92 now.

Mike Gorman’s last game as voice of the Celtics.

Forgot to ask this Sunday, but John Sterling's retirement brought it to mind- is Gorman's call of Larry's 60 point game around anywhere? Only call I've heard over the years is Sterling's. Or, perhaps, I'm misremembering and there was no local (Boston) broadcast.

It is high....it is far....John Sterling is gone from the Yankees broadcast booth

(going to post this in the Gorman thread too)....has anyone come across Gorman's call of the event? View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRUlpUkPMLA

Mike Gorman’s last game as voice of the Celtics.

Thanks. I'm sorry I missed that. Will have to go back and find it. Better that than him on death's door or the like.

Mike Gorman’s last game as voice of the Celtics.

Didn't he do games with Cousy as well? Mr. Basketball isn't well enough to attend, but I'm surprised he wasn't mentioned (or at least not in the ceremony itself, maybe during the game and I missed it).

Dalbec sent down to AAA (recalled to BOS on 4/12)

Dalbec's the poster child for "looks good in a uniform" and "looks good standing up at the plate"....but cannot play at the big league level. Sad, really, like a lot of you, have always rooted for him to turn it around.

    2004 WS Celebration

My favorite part of the Arod slap play was Jeter giving the fist pump as he crossed home plate with the tying (or next to tying) run ... then later having to go back on base.

Had no idea Kornet's father played in the NBA. :) And in an era where I paid more attention to who was on what team than I do now.

What Was The Red Sox Starting Lineup For Your First Home Opener in Person?

I went to that game. My first was this one, very poorly attended (23K might have included seats sold, the game was postponed a couple times) , even though it was a nice day. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS197404110.shtml A team with a lot of holes in its lineup. Rico and...
