    Baseball thoughts without threads

Eliminate divisions. Reduce the season to 160 games--still 52 series/26 weeks. Play the four teams from your former division 11 games over 4 series Play your 10 other league opponents 10 games over 3 series. Play 16 interleague games, all in same time zone. Top 3 get in. 4th and 5th best teams...

should MLB get rid of divisions?

It's kind of tough to prove that it would be successful.  I think players are wussier than they used to be--probably because people are softer now, and the availability of greenies is gone.  My feeling is that if they cut back a couple Monday's or Thursday's and took more 3-city trips with off...

should MLB get rid of divisions?

I hate divisions because they're stupid and unneeded when 5 of 15 teams from each league qualify for the postseason. In this time of parity and few very good teams, the lack of a balanced schedule where the best teams earn their spot in the playoffs is terrible. If the Pirates and Cardinals are...

Manfred May Push Back Trade Deadline

If the season remains 26 weeks and ends on a Sunday, the trade deadline should always be a Wednesday night at 9pm with 8.5 weeks left in the season.  Make a TV show out of it.   That would leave about 54 games left.    After that, you can make waiver deals the next 4.5 weeks.    The final 4...

    Who's on your 2016 ballot

I only have ten that I think are Hall of Famers, so it's pretty easy for me:   Clemens, Bonds, Griffey, McGriff, Raines, Schilling, Mussina, Trammell, Piazza, Bagwell

What reasonable rule changes would you propose to increase offense in MLB?

Perhaps a more balanced league schedule would increase offense.   I'd be interested to know what the overall numbers are for division teams vs division teams, vs the other 10 league teams, and interleague, respectively since 2001- when the heavily unbalanced schedule started.   Pitchers facing...

    Hall of Fame balloting

Random thought, but trying to think of the next Hall of Fame candidate to cause people to flip out like Jack Morris... how about Omar Vizquel?.  He had a lot of "Future Hall of Famer Omar Vizquel" support while he was playing.  I don't think he's worthy, but if the same voters are there in 4...

    Hall of Fame balloting

To say Jack Morris is polarizing is an understatement.  I'm not getting into a pissing match, but I'll say he's a unique case for the time he played...his peak of 1979-1992.   For a 14-year period (not just the 80's), he had a 3.77 ERA which is on the high side, but he averaged 7.28 innings per...

    Hall of Fame balloting

No matter what you think of Jack Morris, I don't think it's wrong to say that the steroids are keeping him out of the Hall of Fame.   If Bonds and Clemens would have got in last year...if Piazza, Biggio, and Bagwell didn't have suspicions...and if McGwire, Sosa, and Palmeiro weren't still on the...

    Hall of Fame balloting

The thing with that, is that with any common sense, there probably are players already in the Hall that took steroids.  And with certainty, there are players that took chemical enhancement in amphetamines,  Do I think greenies are as bad as steroids?  No.  But it is a form of cheating.    Plus...

    Hall of Fame balloting

^ That's a solid ballot.  If a voter isn't taking a stand on Bonds and Clemens, it really is impossible to turn in a ballot that you feel good about leaving somebody off.   If I had an unlimited vote on this ballot, I think these guys should be in:   Maddux, Thomas, Glavine, Mussina, Biggio...

    Hall of Fame balloting

Garry Brown ballot (9):  Maddux, Glavine, Bagwell, Biggio, Martinez, Morris, Piazza, Raines, Schilling   Did he just forget to vote Frank Thomas?    Tell me about this Garry Brown since I'm not from Boston.

    Hall of Fame balloting

Both are clear Hall of Famers in my opinion.  I'd take Raines 1981-1987 over any of Biggio's best 7 years.   That said, it's a joke Raines hasn't got in by now.  Biggio will in the next three years.

    Hall of Fame balloting

Just want to point out today is Minnie Minoso's birthday.  His age is up for debate, but he's listed at 88.  Good chance he's over 90.   This man should be in the Hall of Fame--and soon-- so he can enjoy it still.   He doesn't have all time great career numbers, but considering he got a late...

    Hall of Fame balloting

He led the league in OBP once, but his career OBP was .385.   808 stolen bases.  85% success rate.   Missed about 140 games in 81, 87, 94 and 95 due to strikes and owner collusion(87).   I think he suffered a little bit because of the early career drug use.  But mostly I think he played too...

    Hall of Fame balloting

There's no point in digging too deep on Glavine vs Mussina.  They're both Hall of Famers.  Glavine is more famous.  It really is as simple as that.

    Hall of Fame balloting

Compare Glavine's 1991-2000 to Mussina's 1992-2001.  They are pretty close as far as numbers, but Glavine was on winning teams every year, he won the Cy twice, and had four other top-3's.     Don't worry, Mussina will get in someday, but Glavine is the more accomplished pitcher.

    Hall of Fame balloting

That's why I can't understand why anyone would think Sosa or McGwire belong in.  Intellectually, I can look at Barry Bonds career and begrudgingly put him in.  He was a great player before he juiced his brains out.   McGwire and Sosa were PED creations.  But I'm not worried--good chance they...

    Hall of Fame balloting

Not only will it be interesting to see who gets in, but who gets knocked off the ballot with less than 5% of the vote.    Palmeiro will be gone.  Sosa and McGwire might.  McGriff could too, which would be unfortunate, but understandable.    But what about a guy like Jeff Kent?  He should...
