A Dream of 2025, What is Going Right and Looks like the Sox can Build On

Well, if all goes well with the big name prospects, the Sox could have a mostly homegrown quality starting line up in 2025: Teel, Casas, Grissom, Mayer, Devers, Duran, Rafaela, Anthony, Yoshida(?) Very lefty heavy. Still lacks a RHH power hitter. Maybe a FA acquisition there in the outfield...

    SS possibilities going forward

Man, it makes so much sense to put Rafaela at short under the circumstances (that is, if they aren't going to acquire a competent veteran dude). I'm surprised it took this long.

My Ideal Metric - TOTAL bases

I've always enjoyed RC/27 - runs created per 27 outs. It largely uses basic conventional numbers, so maybe isn't as esoteric as the current advanced analytical stuff. But it gives you a number for a hitter akin to ERA for a pitcher, and one that makes sense in game terms. I'm surprised it...

The TrevorEnding Story: needs shoulder surgery, out for the year (4/9 update)

Well. There were already red flags at the time of the signing. Or yellow ones at least. There was some evidence of injured throwing arm issues, and his offense dropped off significantly in the season before they signed him. There was a reason he was the last standing of that strong FA shortstop...

The TrevorEnding Story: needs shoulder surgery, out for the year (4/9 update)

Not necessarily. There are some utility guys who are essentially starters, playing all around the diamond. Having a guy like that can be a core piece to a high quality team. Zobrist in his TB form, and of course the great Tony Phillips.

The TrevorEnding Story: needs shoulder surgery, out for the year (4/9 update)

Yeah, this really sucks. Story at short and Rafaela at center - along with the starting pitching - have been the major difference between last year and this. And of the course the two are related. Such a bummer, and hope it's not as bad as it looks.

March/April: Red Sox discussion, observations and trend tracking...AKA It's not all about the Benjamins

And mine: - I was bullish on Crawford and Pivetta coming into the season. And enthusiastic about Bello. First start for Whitlock and Houck looked nice, though I do worry there's a solid sample size for them as starters, and I'll believe them in that role only after a few quality starts. Even...

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

I really can't see the logic of signing Giolito to his contract and not signing Montgomery, no. I can't see the logic of passing on a few very good RHH power hitters who got modest contracts. It's seems pretty clear that those decisions are likely mandated from above. I can see the logic of the...

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

This is so dead on. Forgive me for not adding much to the conversation beyond "what Yo La Tengo said," expect to say that this argument reveals something really off about the how the Red Sox are run right now. Some kind of dysfunction/lack of logic. Every move Brad Stevens makes, you see the...

Let's Predict the 2024 Red Sox Season

With Giolito out, Montgomery not signed, but with some spring sparks of hope from the youngsters, I'm gonna amend my prediction to 78 wins. If I may.

Do You Want John Henry To Sell The Red Sox?

Totally. As flawed as he was that 2004 championship team was as much Duquette's (and previous ownership) as Theo/Henry's ....yes, they can't do it without Theo/Henry. But they can't do it without the core that was created before they arrived, either.

Remaining Free Agent Speculation and Signings (Trades, too)

A big difference is that out of 8 billion people on earth there are 1,200 on 40 man rosters in MLB. That's it - a fixed number. And major league baseball isn't about to contract. There are tens of thousands of writers (and as far as actors are concerned hundreds of thousands), seeking freelance...

Do You Want John Henry To Sell The Red Sox?

I agree! And I think everything you say above is the very reason why many folks wanted the organization to be a little more aggressive on the FA and/or trade front, especially given that they have such a glaring achilles heal in starting pitching. A couple acquisitions - that would not...

Do You Want John Henry To Sell The Red Sox?

I hate to rehash this again, but Betts has said repeatedly that he was open to staying in Boston. He was even looking for a new house in the area. Other players have reported that Betts was willing to stay in Boston. It's just not true that Betts knew he didn't want to stay and was on his way...

    Offseason rumors

I agree with this. Whitlock, especially, has a growing sample size, and he's much better in relief. Houck's troubles third time through persist. They'd both be excellent quills out of the pen. Incredibly the biggest need to address going into the off season has somehow gotten worse!! Especially...

2024 Red Sox: Better, Worse, or About the Same?

I thought the team with a (allegedly healthy) Giolito was a bit better than last year, and now with him out a bit worse. So, I said about the same.

Lucas Giolito has an elbow issue.

And one who was TERRIBLE the second half of last season. Yes, he had personal issues. Though I'm sure a lot of guys do, and still perform not too far from their mean. He was abjectly bad at the end of the season, and as a guy who has been historically good, that should raise some red flags and...

Lucas Giolito has an elbow issue.

Yeah, while the opposite is true. This is what happens when you sign misfit toys. Guys with conspicuously bad recent pasts, and guys who were good a few years ago and are reclamation projects. Time to just sign currently quality players who have been durable and have not been recently injured.

    Red Sox Sign CJ Cron

I mean, this signing can't hurt. Depth piece. Worst case, he gets DFA-ed. Best case, he is an effective player off the bench. I mean, two seasons ago, he was still a good hitter. Though how many recent acquisitions have we said that about ...

    Offseason rumors

I sincerely hope a lot of this dies down once some combination of the following happens: -Grissom shows promise at 2B and flashes that bat. I THINK IT'LL HAPPEN -Duran shows last year wasn't a mirage. YEP -C-Note shows an ability to hit major league pitching. COULD BE -Yoshida shows last...
