Would've been onside if Mane hadn't blocked off the defender. As it is, he looked pretty much level but the shirtsleeve nonsense puts him offside.

Can't wait for a goal to be chopped off for hand ball when it hits the shirtsleeve at some point

Most impressive thing to me about Jota is his pressing - did not expect to see someone who looks like Robertson running down Otamendi every time he's closing an opponent down

California. Duh.
Holding onto these one goal leads with 15-20 minutes left is what Liverpool excelled at last season. Clearly a bigger challenge now without VVD, but it's nice to have Alisson back.

I had not noticed previously, but Oli McBurnie reminds me of former Yankee Jeff Nelson. Probably just the current state of his hair and ‘stache.

Now I hate him.

Is anyone else having trouble with the NBC Sports app now? It's saying I don't have subscription (I'm pretty sure I do--it worked fine yesterday). If I log out and log back in, it won't even show me an activation code for my AppleTV. I can get into NBC Sports Gold though, which is weird.

Nothing is on NBC Sports or Gold anymore.

There are definitely games on NBC Sports. That's where I watch about 1/3 of the games. Maybe it's different on TV vs. the app, but they do still show games on NBC don't they? Those are the ones that would be there. I have Peacock for the others.

Edit: to be clear, I'm watching in Europe through a VPN on my parents' cable subscription...but they said it is working on their end.

2-0 Saints. Everton badly missing Coleman and his backup Kenny. Godfrey on the right is not a natural RB and James isn’t a great defender. Midfield disjointed. Not getting forward we’ll without Richarlison.

Did Godfrey clipping Bertrand's foot in the box even go to VAR? Watching on mute and didn't see any graphics indicating it did

Hey look - a legit handball!

Dig the minty green, wish the shorts were a stronger contrast.

For anyone greatly interested in whether I can watch the game - turns out I needed to try a different server location for the VPN, as apparently the NBC Sports App has gotten wise to the location I was using.

Digne sent off.

Everton will now ask for an act of parliament
Digne fouled him twice in that series. My Everton dislike growing by leaps and bounds this season. I’m still pissed off about last week.

Edit: Oh, and f*** Jordan Pickford. Goon.

I had no idea about the ugly side of James Rodriguez until the last two matches. He’s supremely talented, but good lord his constant histrionics, whining, chippyness... Yuck.

Ryan Fraser gets the start at RB for Newcastle, Yedlin not even on the bench. He did make the EPL squad at least.

Not a red.

But whatever.
He endangered the safety of an opponent. Intent is irrelevant. What interpretation of that wasn’t red?

He knew exactly what he was doing, but blew it. He wanted to “accidentally” nudge KWP and break up the play. He skateboarded on the ankle instead. He took a chance, mistimed it, and got the card he’d earned.

He’s unlucky, I guess, that the ref played advantage after his yellow card challenge to start the play.

I assume you are referring to Newcastle? That was fantastic. I am confident Wolves were expecting a ball in the air to Carroll. Brilliant strike.
Yeah that was the one. The analysts afterwards seemed to think Rui Patricio set up his wall wrong, but even so, to see that and execute like that was really impressive.

So, if Justin had allowed himself to be mauled, Bellerin is off. But, because he protected himself, he saved his opponent.

EPL refereeing is utterly incompetent.

I’ve read physicists who estimate that the maximum curve pro footballer can get on a ball is about a meter. Murphy got awfully close to that.

Roberto Carlos would like a word with those physicists.
To be fair, Roberto Carlos’ fee kick ability was well above professional grade.

Edit: just came across this recent piece with physicists discussing THAT free kick. Getting that much pace and spin on the ball is at the upper limits of human ability.

A half-hour in at Turf Moor and the teams have combined for two (2) shots total. zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Pretty poor first half for Spurs. This kind of felt a lot like the bad games last season; teams buckled down in the middle and force Tottenham to play the ball from the wings, and Davies just isn't good enough to consistently make teams pay for flooding the center of the box. This is where never finding a real placement for Eriksen at CAM has come to hurt them. Obviously, will be interesting to see what Bale can do if he comes in.

Brilliant execution right there; almost has made up for the 75 minutes of pure boredom it took to get there.

Lamela has 35 yellow cards and zero red cards in his career. I wonder what the record is for most bookings without a sending-off?

Dier got away with a terrible mistake on that long ball over the top when he was bailed out by a very questionably handball call on Wood.

Credit to Burnley, I thought they were the better team in the first half. But that game could not have unfolded more predictably.
