Don't think they had a morning skate today. Yesterday, Butch said Vaakanainen was cleared and may go in. He wasn't sure who was coming out with Bergy back but Studnicka was an extra at practice, so odds are it is him.

Hall - Bergeron - Pastrnak
Frederic - Coyle - Smith
DeBrusk - Haula - Foligno
Blidh - Nosek - Lazar

Reilly - McAvoy
Grzelyck - Carlo
Forbort - Clifton/Vaakanainen

Ullmark

Every season I get full on sick of Cassidy's tinkering. Those D pairs might get me there.

Gryz is great with Mac. Let's change it. Reilly is good with Carlo. Let's change it. Why? bc Reilly is good with Mac. Ok, are they as good as Gryz and Mac? No. Ok..Is Gryz and Carlo a good pair? Also no, they are -6 at 5v5 in 200 minutes together.

Cool, I get why we're doing it then.

Pasta made a mistake not shooting there, but let’s focus on the real problem. The fact that this management group thought that giving Derek Forbort a three year contract is a problem. That’s just incompetence.

Watch the Islanders go on like a 18 out of 19 run now. If these guys think they have a playoff spot locked up they’re kidding themselves.

That was the worst hockey game I've seen in a long time. The Islanders are the missionary position of hockey. What a fucking bore. It was the usual suspects tonight. Forbort/Vaak pairing with a fantastic 18.5% xG. Haula line got absolutely caved in. 32.9% xG and the shot and chance data is worse. This team needs some upgrades in the worst way. I know we say it after every loss but Sweeney really screwed the pooch this offseason.

The part that iritates me is that anyone with access to hockeyref and naturalstattick knew the Forbort and Foligno deals were fraught with risk. Despite all the warning signs flashing, they signed those two deals anyways. Haula kind of is what he is. He's not a second lind center but they need him to be one right now. Nosek has been perfect. The logic behind Ullmark was solid, he just hasn't peformed.

Forbort and Foligno are $6.9 million they could've spent on real upgrades.

Completely agreed. Haula's data was kinda bad but he also looks like a third line LW with some versatility so its whatever. I'm not that bothered by it. Nosek has been great. Ullmark is someone I had high hopes would reverse some of the underlying numbers but he's really not doing that. I think hes a .915 type goalie in shot reducing system. It's fine, but I am second guessing my distaste for signing a guy like Freddy Anderson to big money over the younger Ullmark, that's for sure. Foligno and Forbort were dreadful by the data. The worst part is that even though they made the bad signings, their deployment has been sheer incompetence. Foligno has been a nothing offensive player for years. He's a good 5v5 defender, that's it. The rest is gone. But they play him on the power play. They play him in the top 9 and give him o zone starts. His best spot on the team is to Nosek's left the way Cassidy buries the fourth line. He'd be fine there. Foligno-Nosek-Lazar is a really quality defensive fourth line. Playing him the way they do just exacerbates the bad contract. Don't even get me started with Forbort. Playing him with McAvoy is a sin. He's an upper middle class man's Tinordi. $9m for that guy.

That Forbort contract is literally a fireable offense. What makes it worse is that they targeted this guy early in free agency, it wasn’t like they missed out on everyone else, and he was the only guy left. Management actually looked at this player and thought that they needed to give him a three year deal and lock him up early. Anyone who saw this player and thought that they should make a three year commitment to him should not be making any more roster decisions going forward.
