I couldn't resist felllas. Out with the old...in with the new. Not for nothin' but has BB picked up the 12th game yet?? He indicated he was close in early November but maybe he was waiting to finish the coaching hire.

I predict an 8-4 record...and a win over USC. How's that for optimism and getting behind the new regime.

Might as well put this here since the 2012 season is now over. I really dont like what I'm hearing from Day and Addazio about the offense. Sounds very run heavy - which makes almost no sense given the personnel currently on the team.

This is where having a real sports media would be very helpful. Would be nice to have someone ask the basic question of how his entire history calling plays has been 1)ineffective offenses and 2)extraordinarily run-dominated ones.

Has anything changed?

Also, really hoping there is real staff turnover. Not out of the woods on that yet from the guys on EO. If we see McGovern and Siravo and others back...well, shame on everyone involved. Could see McG as a LB coach I guess but at some point you need new blood. Even Ryan Day's return seems too much to me.

Agreed. Unless he actually gets BC back to having an oline that's worth a shit. But the offense does sound very Dana Bible-ish: dive left, dive right, play action pass to TE, punt. We'll see.
In Florida they ran a lot but were extremely successful. At Temple, keep in mind that Golden's Temple teams ran a ton and were built for that scheme. I think he'd rather run the ball more but I don't think we are looking at a carbon copy. The question Inhave is whether we will see a multiple, pro set offense vs. the read option. I'm not really a fan of the latter.

To be clear, I dont mind if they ultimately go to a read option - its a really good college system (e.g. see Crane against FSU in 08). Just that they should not be using it next season; they have a very good college pocket QB - Addazio needs to take advantage of him.

I don't have the link at the moment but one of the ESPN blogs had a two part interview with Addazio and he stated pretty clear that he was looking forward to Rettig, that he was a thrower and that he was excited to get more balance. Of you read the quotes it sounds like he knew he was running a ton at Temple but it was a matter of necessity.

BC will not be throwing at a 70/30 clip. I think we will see a balanced attack and then an attempt
to move to a run based attack with dual threat type QBs. I actually am a bit fearful of that going forward but next year is not an issue.

Take a look at Day's quotes upon getting the job. They sound a lot like those of Jags when he came in back in 2007.

They will be 8-4 and beat USC...and play the #3 team in the Big Ten in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando next year and they will be in the ACCG in 2015....bank on it. We are in good hands....don't worry. We will kick some ass next year. We have a very good football coach. A very good football coach. Don't listen to those no nothings on EO and EA.

There is a 0% chance BC goes into the Coliseum and beats USC with this roster. I hope you're right about Daz though. I don't have the energy to sit through more bad years.
Agreed. As bad as USC was coached this year they can just show up and beat BC with the talent they have. That game will be at least a 4 TD USC win.

Bernie - assuming you have some insight on this - what we have from a demonstrated standpoint is a guy who won some games with Al Golden's players and then fell apart in the first year in the Big East, whose offenses have been outright offensive. I get the enthusiasm and even that we'll bring in some talent, but where is the evidence this guy can coach enough offensive talent to win football games? Outside of OC with Tim Tebow one of the best college football players of all time, he's never been responsible for a good offense (if you believe Fla fans who think year 2 in Florida with Brantley at QB was a disaster).

I get the rah rah stuff. But at some point college football teams need to score 30 points a game, or rely on a defense like the 2008 Eagles had. This is the concern.

I HATE the read option for BC, absolutely HATE it. It is a fine college offense, but a system that is a terrible fit for the players BC has historically brought in and the historical strengths of the program. It is al about zone blocking rather than power blocking. It requires exceptional athletes at the QB position rather than pro style QB's. So there you are basically taking BC's 2 biggest historical strengths, power blocking OL, and pro style QB's and wiping them out of the program

OK...is there some rah rah in my comments....you bet there is. However, Not all is peaches and cream in South Central. On paper they should kick BC's ass. I will give you that but that team has no heart, their defense is very suspect and can be run on. Also, the bloom is off the rose with Lane Kiffin. He is losing the recruiting battle in So Cal to Jim Mora, Jr, Chip Kelly and Dave Shaw at Stanford. Kiffin is not that good of a coach. His game plans are pretty pedestrian and aggressive, attacking defenses give USC problems.

BC will have a 60-40 split on offense (run/pass). The best running back on the team was benched for most of the season and Rettig showed flashes of brilliance last year. The problem was that there was no consistency and the defense could not get off the field. If you look at those 3rd down conversion stats last year they were eye popping. When you are allowing the other team to be on the field for 37-39 minutes a game, you are not going to score many points. On offense, BC has weapons and if they can stay on the field, they can compete with SC. The key is going to be to toughen up that defense. A scheme change is probably necessary to fit the talent (whatever is there) and essentially tell everyone, on all sides of the ball that they are playing for jobs.

BC was out of shape last year and by the time they got into shape, half the team was out with injuries (lack of conditoning usually leads to mass injuries). You had a coach who was playing in pads in practice way too much because he blamed his kids for his inability to be a head coach. So, you lose kids physically and eventually you lose kids emotionally. All of that is now gone. Addazio will have them in the weight room and they will physically be in the best shape since they came to Chestnut Hill.

Right now, USC opens on the road on 8/29/13 at Hawaii and then plays BC on 9/14/13. They will in all likelihod play a game on 9/7/13 as they don't want to be off for 17 days in between games that early in the year. Currently BC has no games scheduled before USC. I would suspect they will probably schedule Stony Brook before USC and maybe get another game in there. Personally, I would schedule Stony Brook for 8/31/13 at home, and then not schedule a game in between that and USC. I would be on the phone with the ACC and talk with them about making the schedule user friendly so that all of their teams have the best chance to win OOC games, especially against high profile teams like the Trojans. This conference desperately needs to do that. That way you start summer camp on August 10th, get your three weeks in and play Stony Brook. You then have 2 weeks to get ready for USC. In fact, if possible under NCAA rules, I fly the team out to CA a week ahead and practice in San Clemente at Rettig's old high school. Get them used to the weather and the time change. And continue to build character. All in all you will be preparing for them for 5 weeks while USC is just looking at BC as another game.

On the O, you will run smash mouth football in an effort to set up the pass to Amidon. We don't have speed burners so we are not going to be able to lenghten the field but we can slug it out with them and when they start to cheat up, play- action to the wideouts.

On D, you put 8 in the box and make them rely on the arm of the QB. They have a good one and he is a Connecticut native. If you play straight up you give them too many options. You shut down the run and force the QB out of the pocket. Hit him on every play. You attack the QB and the feature back on every play, no matter what. Will it work all the time?,No but you don;t give them a multi threat attack. If you do, you lose.

If you play with the right attitude, scheme to contain them and go right after them on both sides of the ball....guess what, good things happen. Its a new era and this team will be good. Not great, but good. And they will beat USC.

Bernie, I love the enthusiasm, but you've lost the plot here.

BC has zero talent and will give up as many points as USC wants to score. That game is a minimum 3-touchdown loss, even under the best of circumstances.

I don't care specifically about the USC game (though I will that weekend). I want to know why I should be excited about bringing the masterminds of the 109th rated offense in D1 to run the offense. I can't see one. Seems to me this guy has an extremely rigid philosophy which doesn't remotely fit into the 2010's approach to winning football games and will put tremendous pressure on a defense to hold opponents under 20, when best case scenario we are never going to have the most talented team on the field.

Doesn't have to be Mike Leach (though I'd have done anything to get him to BC). But running 60/40 is insanity. It's what you do as a gimmick offense to make up for a lack of personnel. Shouldn't have happened at Florida, shouldn't happen at BC. No coach has needed that kind of split at BC to win - every coach here has gotten a good OL and a pro-style QB and been able to win 7-9 games, save for the disaster of Dan Henning and the complete disaster of Spaziani.

This should have been addressed by Brad Bates and is another reason I think he got totally snowballed by the rah rah of "dream job" when I'd bet this guy would be on the next plane south if a major job was offered to him.

Coaching staff makes the difference here, unless Ryan Day has the ability to call his own plays and think back to the Chip Kelly days (which clearly he was not last season) things are not going to work on offense.

With respect to last years Temple offense, I'm not sure what you can glean from a team that lost 4 of its 5 starting OL to graduation (not to mention their leading rusher from the year before).

It was a very young team making the move to the BE.

You're probably right. I just think if Steve Logan was the OC, they're not 109. The effort was not made to bring in an innovative offensive mind, and given the inability of this program to get anyone to care about it, buy tickets, or donate money..they should have.

Who cares about the historical strengths of the program? It doesnt mean anything - the school doesnt run the football program, the coach does. Previous coaches have put their efforts into finding these types of players.

Oh and this statement isnt really even true - BC historical strength isnt power blocking OL, its just OL in general. Mark Spinney, Matt Tennant, Claiborne, and Castonzo all say hello as better zone than drive blockers.

Oh and Chris Crane says hi, as a perfectly fine example of a read option QB.

My point is go get the best talent and then fit the system to the talent. If Addazio has a better eye for option talent - then hell probably end up with more of that. Its a much better idea then trying to jam square pegs into round holes (aka Spaz running a drive blocking scheme with a bunch of superior zone blockers).

Yeah Chris Crane was a great read option QB that one game against FSU. He also looked like Dan Marino against NC St.

And Claiborne was a MUCH better drive blocker than a zone blocker. He looked completely lost in the zone scheme, and excelled when they let him just destroy the guy on the other side. Castonzo was the only one on that group you mention who deserves mention with the history of OL U. Tennant was decent at best, and Spinney was barely servicable.

You're really something. From 2009-2011, BC would have killed to have a guy as good as Chris Crane playing QB. The 2008 version of Chris Crane was a solid average ACC level QB, something the team didnt have for multiple seasons afterwards and only now

Claiborne was easily a much better zone blocker - its not really much of a discussion. The guys play dropped off significantly post Jags - he went from being one of the best interior linemen in the conference to a guy who wasnt anything special. But that goes to my main point - if youre "history of OL U" revolves around guys who go to the NFL, then theyre all guys who can do both. There isnt much of any true 100% drive blocking team left in the entire league. Almost every team uses some zone principles in their line assignments.

The rest of the post about the OL men is a bunch of horseshit. Castonzo only worth mentioning? Shit man, the guy (with Snee) are the best OL the school has had in the past 15 years. If Tennant was only decent WHY THE FUCK IS HE STILL KICKING AROUND THE NFL 3 YEARS LATER. Decent college players dont stick in the NFL past a training camp - realistically they dont even get camp invites. As for Spinney - yeah hes not some historical great or anything - but he would have been the best OL on the team this past season. Maybe that just shows how shitty a job your boy Spaz did recruiting drive blockers.

USC is no longer the only game in town in recruiting in So Cal. UCLA is making big inroads in Southern California high schools and that was my point. You can see the shift starting.

Addazio recruiting update:

1. Our best committed RB for 2013 is now our best decommitted RB.
2. We just added a QB (3rd one in the class) from South Carolina. "Dual threat" QB who also had offers from such schools as Buffalo and Florida Atlantic. So I assume the dual threats referred to are passing in the MAC and running in the Sun Belt. We already had the Boyle kid from CT committed to play QB, but I'm glad to see Addazio is already trying to force his offense onto this roster (square peg, meet round hole).

Signed,

I don't think they have added him, just offered.

Buit at least the coaching staff is coming together. It looks like they are putting together a staff of every middle aged white man who worked at either BC or Temple last year. As rumors have both Sean Devine and McGovern coming back again; although McGovern demoted to LB coach maybe.

I was just looking something up on the ACC website and noticed the sport-by-sport standings. I didn't realize how far BC had fallen in most sports - it's essentially a total non-factor right now in the ACC:

Well both Soccer teams have been in the tournament for the past 3 years with the women getting to the final four two years ago and the final 8 last year. Women's bball has been weak for awhile and baseball has had a few flashes but struggle against the southern team. We need to build the baseball facility.

Think about how noncompetitive a school has to be to finish in last place in 33% of all sports in a 12-team league. It makes me wonder whether BC can make the financial commitment necessary to actually compete at this level.

You think Wake Forest would have lost to Bryant? They are the only other hope for a team to finish behind BC in the standings
BC lost without Cliff and with Anderson on one leg. I also think they are still inconsistent. There are some bad teams in the ACC.

Yeah Brown coming in as the DC would be the first really great piece of news in what has been largely a kick in the nuts month for BC fans. From the Daz hiring, to some of the uninspired assistants, to recruits bailing.

According to Blauds, you guys added New Mexico State as the 12th game for this upcoming season. Also, officially we will be the opener for you guys.

See you fools on August 31st.

Edit: got the date wrong. It's actually 8/31. This season is going to seem so long with that 12th game added.

As for philosophy, Brown’s approach may be music to the ears of Eagles fans.

“I’m a firm believer that you play the game on the balls of your feet, not on your heels. From day one, we’re going to be aggressive,” he said. “We’re going to attack the line of scrimmage. We’re going to get after the quarterback. We’re going to play with our hair on fire on defense. I’m a big believer in playing for tackles for loss and being disruptive and making life difficult for the quarterback. We’re going to attack. That’s the style of defense that I’ve employed. We’re going to fly around and attack the pass.”

While at UConn, Brown led a turnaround on D. The Huskies went from 58th in total defense in 2010, the year before he was hired, to 51st in 2011 and 10th in 2012.

The Huskies ranked seventh in the country in rushing defense in 2012, allowing an average of just 97.92 yards a game.

Brown’s defense also proved capable of getting to the quarterback, with 33 sacks in 2012 -- good for a tie for 19th in the country. BC finished dead last, 124th, with just six sacks in 2012.

No more cushion?! I like this guy already. We might actually knock a QB over next year.
Brown was the DC Whipple wanted to bring in back in 2007 when GDF interviewed him and ultimately hired Jags with the condition of retaining the best coach at BC in the past 15 years. How did that work out?

[sup]here's what you should know about Brown. He likes to play press coverage and pressure the QB. he likes to blitz. when he first started, uconn was in the backfield against most teams early and often and it worked.however....as games go on, teams can adjust and he was caught several times on big polays late in games. Uconn also has 5-6 pros playing defense, including both corners, two DL and two linebackers. But, he can be fun and defense will be aggressive. And, he had a defense that was on the field waaay too much because Uconn's offesne was horrendous the last two years. If he is coordinating a team with a good offense and a lead, he could be even better[/sup]
[sup]I think you'll be generally happy with Brown[/sup]
