2014 we will be awful. But I think finally there will be some personnel you can put together into a program.

I realize that SI piece gets written every year for some new coach (I remember James Franklin at Vandy getting a ton of pub last year in the same way) but this honestly is the first positive BC stuff in a long, long time.

Still have to see how they coach gamedays but amazing the turnaround in perception in a year.

I agree with this. That's why I think it's important to win some games this year. I think 6 wins is within reach and with it a possible bowl bid. That will allow the program to continue its momentum and close on the current class. It will also help build on next years class.

While there's a chance they could surprise in 2014, that would require some amazing performances by a few freshman and the realization that Spaz was an even worse game day coach than any of us thought.

D.J. Gillins decides tomorrow. It seems to be BC or Wisconsin. Needless to say this would be an absolute monster get. He is suppose to be announcing on some radio show between 3-6 PM.

Most of the reports I've seen are that BC Has backed off.  He hasn't even visited either school.  His recruitment (not BC but in general) has been odd to say the least.

The 2014 schedule as of today  is as follows:

HOME
URI
USC
Louisville
Pitt
Syracuse
Clemson

ROAD
Va Tech
Wake
FSU
NC State

NEUTRAL
Army (Yankee Stadium)
UMass (Gillette)- to me that is a neutral site game

Am I missing something or is a 7-5 or 8-4 record not attainable with that schedule?? I say they spilt the road games, win the neutral site games and win 4 home games. Why does everyone think 2014 is going to be a shitstorm?  I'm not  a recruit guy as I always think it is more hype than anything else. It's all about getting good solid players (true) but the ability to coach them up and have the player reach or exceed their potential. If Dazz and his staff are good "coaches" in the truest sense of the word, an 8-4 record in 2014 to me is very attainable.

Gillins picks...... Wisconsin

He says Al Washington was an amazing recruiter.

Says his family was in his ear most about Wisconsin, says that he had "family he didn't know" come out of the woodwork telling him how great Wisconsin is.

Yep it was like, "I had this cousin I didn't know from Atlanta call me up who actually graduated from there......he was telling me great stories."

It sounded as weird listening to it as it does typing/reading it.

I think BC was very right to back off in this situation.    Kid may have talent, but I don't buy he was ever going to be a fit for BC

Schwab was apparently offered by MD today - so WayBack - does he still suck? Or are we at least going to take him off the complete camp flier list?

I didn't say he sucked. But since you're asking, he's a marginal 2* LB. In the three years prior to this one, BC has landed seven LBs who were 3* or better. How is his recruitment consistent with the idea that this year is something special?

Don't come in here bitter because after some early success, it's turned out that this class doesn't look much different from those you've had in recent years. It has become very obvious that this is not a top 30 class. I have not gloated about that clear fact, but since you want to come in and thump your chest about an offer from a team that's won 6 games in the last two seasons, I guess we should call it what it is.

Thats fair. However, the idea this class matches up with anything Spaz put up the past 2-3 years is quite frankly, nuts. The bottom of Spaz's classes were literally D3 players; not lower level FBS; not FCS - fringe D2/D3 guys. Spaz had a total of 9-10 guys all last season that had a single other BCS offer. If you want to compare it to Spaz's first full class (e.g. class '10. Rettigs year), that might be a fair comparison - but that was the one and only year, Spaz ever recruited at that level.

That would be the first point - the second point is generally that its somewhat stupid to talk about offers before the summer is even over and even more inconsistent to compare offers with classes that have already completed.

As for whether its a top 30 class - both Rivals and 247 have it there right now. I would agree that theres a decent chance that it falls out of the top 30 as the recruiting season closes and the teams below add bodies. But its not going to fall to the point of where Spaz's last few classes have been (60s and 70s). So I suppose this all comes back - if youre using Spaz more as a guideline for BC historically - I would agree - this class is right around the historical norm for the program since TOB or at least not far from it. But its better than most of what Spaz put together and lightyears better than what Spaz put together the past two years.

When it's all said and done, you're going to find that 2010 and 2011 compare favorably to this year's class. Nobody is disputing that this year's class will be better than the last two (though I'd argue that it's not THAT much better than 2012), but it's right in line with 2010 and 2011, and to my eyes, probably a bit weaker on average.

Yes, some of these 2* players will get other offers. Just as some players might get a star added or taken away based on their play this year. And of course, some of these prized kids may change their mind and take those offers that you're expecting to come in.

I'm not ready to concede the point on the strength of this class. When all is said and done a few of these recruits are going to see a bump in their ratings.

Also understand that one of the goals of this staff (as with most new staffs) is to have its class in place prior to fall camp breaking. Coaches don't want to be on the road when installing new schemes, etc. They were able to hit on many of their early targets.

They also hit on two key recruiting areas getting a top target at RB and QB. They then improved team speed and athleticism.

At this point it will be about momentum. Win 6/7 games this year and things will begin accelerating.

Which ones? What are you basing that on, besides in Dazz we trust? Are any going to see a drop in their ratings? Are any going to de-commit?

Not him - but I would be shocked if Harold Landry isnt moved up on Rivals. 3 stars currently and has an offer list that includes the entire ACC and a bunch of SEC teams. Certainly could leave though.

Agreed that he seems a likely candidate based on his other offers. Also agreed that he is a candidate to decommit.

I think Landry, Wade and Outlow are all candidates to move up. I also think Lezzar could get a third star.

That said. In addition to the players above I like players like Smith, Yiowdan and Seward. In the past BC's higher rated guys were at the OL and LB positions (with an occasional TE). These guys have more of skill profile.

As I said, it's not In Dazz we Trust as much as I like the approach he is taking. That said I am more than willing to admit that given the past few years I am really anxious for something better.

Finally, part of me hopes you are right and that the prior classes weren't as bad as we all thought and the Spaz and staff were even worse than we thought. That means Bernie's post about 2014 is possible.

Interesting that you pasted the second paragraph but omitted the first paragraph in the article you cite.

"There is no doubt that this is the first team to drop from the top 25 but I don't think you will hear many B.C. fans complaining about that. What Steve Addazio has done here has been nothing short of a miracle. The program was near death and he has revived it and brought a lot of energy to a fan base that was stagnant at best. For a team coming off a 2-10 season to ever be in the top 25 in July is a testament."

I think this captures most of our sentiments well. And I haven't forgot our bet. Don't worry.

It's interesting? I didn't realize you needed a pep talk. I pasted the paragraph I did because of our bet. As to the conclusion in the second half of the first sentence, we shall see. I strongly suspect that if BC ends up with a class ranked in the 50s after another season with less than 5 or 6 wins, you'll hear PLENTY of complaining.

In any event, if you've changed your tune, and will now be excited by a class ranked in the 40s or 50s, I think that's a healthy measured optimism after last year. But earlier, you said:

But here's the thing. From 2009-2012 BCs classes was ranked 70, 47, 38, 63. That class you mention was still way back at 38. There were way too many 2 star reaches at positions of need. When BC was successful it was ranking in 20s under TOB. That's where this class is going to finish. Particularly of note is the early success BC has had with its targets.

Whereas, what I wrote was:

Seems pretty comparable to your 2011 and 2012 classes to me. In 2011, Rivals had you as the #38 class, with 9 three-star and 4 four-star recruits. In 2012, Scout gave you 2 four-star recruits, 8 three-star, and 6 two-star.

This year, Scout really doesn't like your class. Rivals thinks better of the talent, but the reason BC is ranked as high as it is is because it has earlier commits (the rankings are just based on accumulation). Based on average rating of recruit, even Rivals would have BC in the 35-40 range, which seems like a reasonable spot.

Since then, almost two months ago, the recruits brought in have been less well-regarded. Now, as the Rivals link above notes, based on average rating, the class ranking is even lower.

Thanks for your input. You have made your point quite clear.

Anyone heading to USC in September? Seems like there may be quite a contingent heading out there and even a few charter trips. I am trying to decide whether to head there or maybe check out Clemson.

USC is going to be fantastic, spending a weekend in LA versus a weekend in South Carolina...not really a close call.

In other news, can we start a separate BC football thread for Michigan fan trolling?  It's getting tiresome to read.

LOLBOOHOO. Yeah, I just can't get over my Michigan/BC little brother inferiority complex.

I don't believe I've made a single post having anything to do with Michigan in here. Nor has anything I've written been even remotely trolling. BC and UConn fans seem to be very similar in that they think anything outside of pure fanboyism in the team thread is trolling. You have every right to put me on ignore, just as I have every right to post in this thread. And I assure you, I will continue to do so. I grew up in Boston, and as it was the only major college football program around, I rooted for the team as a kid. I continue to hope the program does well. But as an interested observer without any real emotional attachment, I will make my objective views known. And...if I were really trolling, I might have had a little bit to say about the predictions in this thread that BC will beat USC, don't you think?

EDIT: Oh, but you ARE that UConn fan, aren't you? Here's what you were told by a dope (and BC fan) the last time you started crying about this:

And in terms of whining about somone trolling. If someone really trolls it will be dealt with, but this is a college sports forum on a red Sox board. Every thread on this forum has people who are not fans of that team/conference discussing the issues.

Hey, I resemble that remark.! The Coliseum is 10 miles from my home. You are correct Red in that USC is in South Central but it is like an oasis. The campus is beautiful and really all you are doing is driving on to campus about 4 hours before the game, tailgating and heading across the street to the Coliseum. The rest of the time you're in SoCal you can hang out at the beach if you like, head over to Beverly Hills, etc. If anyone is thinking about the trip, I would suggest two (2) alternatives:

1. Come for the week. Fly in the Sunday or Monday before the game. Do the whole So Cal thing. Hit Venice Beach, Santa Monica, go down to The OC and go to Disneyland  ($100 admission btw), play golf at one of the about 1000 courses around here, drive up to Santa Barbara and do the Sideways wine tour, and get back for the game on Saturday.  Fly back home on Sunday. Lots to do and that just scratches the surface.

2. Weekend trip...Fly in Thursday night. On Friday either play golf or do the mini LA  thing (Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica Pier, Pasadena and all the old homes over there, Head over to Malibu and Calabassas and see if you can find a real movie star of one of the Kardashians, or just sit by the pool). Friday night the Dodgers are in town that weekend playing the Giants so if you want to get a real classic LA sports weekend, you can go to Dodger Stadium Friday night and the Coliseum on Saturday. Saturday night, assuming this is not a night game, drive 25 minutes to Santa Monica and check out Whitey's old stomping grounds along with Sonny McLains, a Boston sports bar on Wilshire Blvd.

Bear in mind fellas, it is H-O-T in LA in September. Not humid but hot. 90's during the day is not uncommon. So dress accordngly.

Tix are available for the game now. Go to stub hub, much cheaper. My brother is coming out here and he has signed us up for the tailgate BC is sponsoring on the USC campus the day of the game.

Truth be told I have been to Clemson once and Red is right...quite a game day experience. Real old big time southern football. But I would match up a weekend in LA against a weekend in Western South Carolina.

There did I convince you guys??? Call me Anthony Bourdain.....no reservations!

Oh....pssst...BC will win ;-)

This will be a family trip so that's what makes it difficult coming from the east coast during the first month of school.  Also ... with USC coming in next year that might be enough of a novelty (even though we will get absolutely obliterated).

I was thinking maybe just my son and I would head to Clemson as it will be an easy flight and we can go in and out pretty quickly from Boston.

If BC could ever win this game it would be an incredible momentum builder for the new staff.

Bernie, no doubt about it.  LA is a better vacation,  and a maybe even a better weekend overall.

But as a football weekend,  if what you want is a weekend of football, and tailgating etc.   Clemson wins and by a HUGE margin

Oh and I hope you are right on the outcome, but I think that would be a massive upset. I kind of expect USC to be about a 4TD favorite

I hear you guys. The timing of the game is a bit tough if you have kids in school. Clemson is over Columbus Day so you get the extra travel day. In keeping with my Anthony Bourdain theme...if you go to Clemson, head to Asheville and the BIltmore (Vanderbilt's "country house"). Quite a place.

I actually will be back in Boston the week before as my daughter is heading back to college there for her last year of school and I wil be a "rent a mule" again moving her into her apartment. I was going to try to get to the Villanova game but now I see it is a noon start on Saturday. Can't make it as I will be lifting a couch right about then.  That game should be on Saturday night at 7:30 and it should be like a $10 admission. Noontime on the last weekend of the summer is more of the same old marketing IMHO. They need to showcase the new regime....a big crowd and a win on opening weekend is the way to start things off right.

No disrespect Dave, but watching a game at Alumni and one at the Coliseum is like watching a basketball game at a high school gym and one at Cameron Indoor. The history, Tommy Trojan, the co-eds, the co-eds, did I say the co-eds....anyway, you can't compare the two and I'm no USC fan. I actually like UCLA better. They have a better stadium (the Rose Bowl) and their campus is essentially in between Bel Air and Beverly Hills. If you do ever get out here, drive around UCLA and then drive over to USC. How UCLA historically could not compete with them in football is mindboggling to me.

As a west coast Eagle fan I am hoping BC might schedule more of these games with CA schools in the non ND years (Stanford, Cal and UCLA, not to mention Arizona State or Arizona are all viable home/home games).

I agree a BC win would be a huge upset but, weirder things have happened.

I will be back in Boston for our annual sales meeting in October but they have an open date the weekend I am back. So it looks like the only game I get to see in  perosn this year is USC. Today is August 2nd...29 days to opening kick off.....let's go.

I get what you are saying about the night game, but honestly  it is labor day weekend against Nova,  I don't think there is a time of day they could schedule it and have people want to go.   Forget charging people 10 bucks for the game.  I am not sure they could fill the stadium that day/night if they were paying people 10 bucks to show up

I do agree with you on the West coast games, I'd love to see BC schedule one most every year.  Play a USC/Stanford type in years you don't have ND. Play a SD State type in years you have ND.  Honestly I would love to go out to the west coast for a game, but early September just doesn't work for me

Hall of Famer Art Donovan passed away over the weekend.  He started at ND, but left to fight in WWII, and finished up at BC when he came back.

I remember watching him on Letterman several times, and he was one of the funniest guests ever.  Killed it every time.

When the NFL picked their "All Decade" team for the 1950's and their "Greatest Players of the first 50 years" team, Donovan was picked for both, along with Ernie Stautner.  BC was the only school that had multiple players at the same position (defensive tackle) on those teams.

So the season is finally here.  Villanova is the pre-season #5 in FCS ranking.  I am interested to see how the team performs.

To get things started, here are a few thoughts on the season, along with some questions as we enter the schedule:

1.  While recruiting has slowed a bit they still sit at #28 in the Rivals rankings.  No doubt they will slip a bit as the recruiting season continues into the actual season but their plan was to start out strong and they did a nice job of targeting positions of need early (QB, RB, DL).  It will be crucial that they show some level of success this year to hold onto the high level guys who are being pursued by other programs (Landry for example).

2.  Not sure if it is coincidence or not but BC got through camp very healthy (knock on wood).  One of the (many) criticisms of Spaz was that he had no idea how to run practices and simply went full speed all the time.  Is it luck or practice regimine?  I don't know but Addazzio was very careful with players like Ramsey and Williams who will be important keys to the season.

3.  One area that Spaz seemed to recruit ok was OL.  This unit seemed to play way below its talent level over the years.  I am anxious to see if these guys make a jump with the new staff and the addition of Patchan (transfer from Florida) at LT.

4.  Depth is a real concern.  If you look at the two deep there are many upperclassman.  However, they are thin and one or two key injuries could make a huge difference.

5.  Can Williams be a feature back and carry the load?  William has shown flashes over the years but, as Mike will remind us, he has a tendency to dance behind the line as if he was Barry Sanders rather than hitting the hole strong and taking what he can get.  Addazio likes him.  Let's see what we get.

6.  How will the players adjust to Brown's aggressive system.  The guy has been incredibly successful wherever he has been.  While Spaz's "bend but don't break" system worked for many years it was time to move on.  I am excited to see a BC team that attacks.  BC will be shorthanded in the secondary with ALJ suspended for the first game.

Just some quick hitters.  There are many other storylines but these are some that I will be thinking about.

I think this team will win 6 games this year and has a chance to win 7 if they avoid injury and get a few breaks.

Looking at the two-deep when it came out the other day, I agree about the O Line.  It should be a lot better (not that it could be worse).
I thought we went through this with Chris Crane.  Than Dominique Davis started handing the ball to opposing players.

I'm most interested to see how Addazio and the staff call plays this year.  The strength of the offense is pretty clearly the QB, but he does not fit what those guys are going to want to do offensively.  IMHO, it would be best for the program right now if he adjusts his playcalling to match the personnel, even as he is recruiting the types of kids he needs to run his preferred offense.  If he tries the square peg/round hole thing, this team could be 2-10.

I'm pretty worried about the running game. Not much talent in the backfield right now.
Williams and Kimbell are talented enough if both are healthy. I think Willis and Rouse will also provide some surprises. That said, there's some depth in the WR core and I expect it to be exploited once the run is established.

Nothing like giving up a 47-yard fake punt TD less than 2 minutes into the new era.

Through one quarter they are being outcoached pretty badly.

yes BC has talent issues,  and if you think that will be resolved by next year you are extremely optimistic.  BUT this is not a talent issue.   BC has MUCH more talent on the field than Nova,  it's not even close.    Our OL is 65 pounds (or more) heavier per man than their DL.  Our RB is basically bigger than most of their DL,  and they call a slow developing outside run on 1rst and 10.

First Drive BC stops Nova.   BC falls completely asleep on punt.  TD Nova.   That is coaching not talent

First Drive BC.  BC plays straight up overpowers Nova

Second Drive Nova.   BC has a chance to pick up fumble.  Guys play hero ball don't recover.  Nova gets it back, 3rd and forever. Nova throws a little underneath pass that not only gets the first down it goes for a TD.    Bad coaching BC

Second BC drive.   Dies on the vine when they have a delay of game on first down. Ultimately they fail to convert on 3rd and medium   Coaching

Third Nova drive.  Quick stop

Third BC drive.     First down run a slow developing run outside playing to Nova's strength.

Now once again on their fouth drive after overpowerng Nova on 1rst and second down There are guys open everywhere on 3rd down. At least they finally stop them on another 3rd and forever.

BC may lack some talent in the secondary,  but that should be schemable.   But there is no doubt there is a massive talent gap in BC's favor in this game

They're playing Villanova.  I think the talent is there to beat Villanova.

Nova are pretty good this year from what I've read.
