I don't care that Manning has the record, and both he and Brees are NFL poster boys. They should just be consistent about these things.

The bolded is where you misstepped.  The Pats aren't respected by media and fans.  They are called cheaters that didn't win by playing fair. Big difference.

I don't have a problem with them keeping that as a forwards pass, because if they had called it right on the field you know Peyton is going to make one more completion to break it, but he thought he had broken it so he didn't. It's not like it took some superhuman game in week 17 to break the record.
 
I think playing to the record is kind of unsportsmanlike, but Brady did the same thing and most teams would unless the game were close or important.

How did Brady play to the record? When he actually broke the TD pass one, it was on a go-ahead TD in a back and forth game with the 16-0 record on the line. Alot of the games in the 2nd half of that season were fairly competitive. Even after 2007 the team continues to keep Brady in late and still throwing during games with big leads.
 
(For the record: I don't have a problem with what Manning did)

I don'thave a problem with the record, and you're correct that he would have gotten it if they had called it correctly at the time. However, Elias (who makes the decision) is supposed to be a neutral arbiter of what actually happened, not what would have happened.

Yeah, I was misremembering. I knew games down the stretch were close but I thought the last game wasn't for some reason. My bad.

I take a kind of perverse enjoyment in anything that undermines the legitimacy of individual records in a team sport. :)
 
Manning had the the greatest passing season in terms of yardage not corrected for rule changes (which is likely impossible) or whatever ever. Call me when they start sending offensive linemen to Canton, yeah?
 
One of my favorite moments in sports this year and possibly ever was Jake Motherfucking Peavy saying he didn't want to start that game in the playoffs because if he did, it meant they had lost the game that brought about his start. Fuck counting stats.

I would also point out further that the Patriots had an articulable principle as to what led to the high and, arguably, "surplus" scoring; the "play 60 minutes" mantra that the invoked frequently throughout the season.
 
See, that's the key to the story that gets left out. They lost the 2006 AFCCG when they fell apart at the end. Sure, half the team had the flu, but they were unwilling to accept that excuse, so came to the game with the play hard all 60 minutes principle. That should be a good story--dedication to the craft. It's actually a pretty cool story. That they lost at the end of an almost perfect season to a weak regular season but were peaking at the right time might actually make it more poigiant and profound in some kind of zen koan-Icarus bullshit sort of way, but I can't entertain that idea because it pisses me off.

Don't discount the "Accuse us of cheating? Go fuck yourselves" motivation either. Several players mentiined that as a big factor of their turning games into practice sessions that year.

The Broncos' 606 points topped the 2007 Patriots by 17. The Broncos scored only 68 points when up by at least 17, though, half of the 2007 Pats' total

 My take-away? Not only do the Broncos have a better offense BUT they did not run-up scores like the bullying bad-sport Patriots.
 
The power ranking's second sentence is unnecessary.

This is just dumb. Also, next time someone says the media doesn't talk about the Pats "running up the score 6 years later" I guess we can point to ESPN continuing to make sure everyone knows Manning is a fucking saint.
 
First off, like said above, *not* scoring more points when up 17 cost them a win in one game, and unless we have some context, we don't know how long each team played with leads that big.
 
EDIT: Here's the context. I looked at the box scores.
 
Denver scored 68 points in 160.5 minutes when leading by 17+. That's a point every 2.4 minutes.
NE scored 136 points in 278 minutes when leading by 17+. That's a point every 2.0 minutes.
 
So, yeah, NE scored more often when up big, but that .4  minute difference doesn't sound as bad for NE as saying they scored twice as many points

Doesn't that really just mean the Broncos defense was atrocious? They weren't running up the score because their defense gave up too many points. Stupid stat, stupid to point it out. It has nothing to do with 2007.

MDL was correct on the previous page. I was just pissed at the recent Patriot coverage in comparison to Denver. I apologize to you for the "trolling" remark. I'll keep my remarks Bronco related in this thread from now on.

All of Denver's losses this season came to the remaining 3 AFC teams. They were 1-3 against them, with 120 points allowed.
