Baseball season starts earlier for those who care about the college side. Season begins tomorrow. I don't know if we've ever had a college baseball thread, but we do now. Let's go.

2012 in review:
*Arizona spoiled South Carolinas bid at a three-peat to capture its fourth CWS title, and its first since 1986. The Cats went a perfect 10-0 in Omaha.
*The year of the northern teams: Kent St., St. Johns and Stony Brook all won regionals on the road. Since 1999 (new regional format), just five teams north of the Mason-Dixon Line had accomplished this feat.
*Nearly twice as many seniors selected in the top 10 rounds of the draft compared to years past due in large part to the new draft rules.
*Oregon, a club sport prior for 27 years until 2009, was a top eight national seed as well as a regional and super-regional host.
*Florida righthander Jonathon Crawford spun the first no-no in postseason play since 1991 (John Burke, also from UF). On the same night, Kent St. upset Kentucky in a 21-inning thriller, the second longest game in tournament history.
*N.C. State freshman left-hander Carlos Rodon was outstanding, going 9-0, 1.61 with 132 strikeouts and 41 walks in 111 innings. Rodon was Baseball Americas freshman of the year and packs a 97 mph fastball to go with a power slider into the mid-80s.
*Missouri St. righthander Nick Petree went 73 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
*Kentucky opened up the season winning its first 22 games. Two other teams actually had longer winning streaks Baylor (24), Utah St. (32).
*Southeast Missouri teammates Trenton Moses (26th round, Braves) and Kenton Parmley had dynamite seasons. Moses reached base in all 59 games, leading the nation in on-base and slugging, while Parmley compiled a 47-game hitting streak, which tied for the third-longest in D-I history.
*Vanderbilt started the year by going 7-15, but won 22 of its last 26 games to earn a regional bid. Each of the three games in the regional against N.C. State came down to the final at-bat, but the Wolfpack got the last hurrah, scoring six runs in the final two innings to come back from a four-run deficit.

Off-season storylines:
*Three-time national coach of the year Ray Tanner was promoted to Athletic Director at South Carolina. Tanner won the CWS in 10 and 11, and lost in the championship in 12. Chad Holbrook, who served as an associate head coach for the past four years at the program, was named to replace Tanner.
*Modified RPI formula begins this season. Road wins will now be worth 1.3 victories, while neutral-site wins will be worth 1.0 victories, and home wins will be worth 0.7 victories. Conversely, home losses will count as 1.3 losses, and road losses will count as 0.7. RPI is comprised of winning percentage (25 percent), opponents' winning percentage (50) and opponents' opponents' winning percentage (25).
*Southern Cal's head coach Frank Cruz was fired for knowingly violating Countable Athletically-Related Activities. CARA rules restrict the number of hours student-athletes can spend in activities director by a coach. Dan Hubbs was promoted to head coach.
*Vanderbilt pitching coach Derek Johnson became the Cubs' minor league pitching coordinator.
*Florida righthander Karsten Whitson, the Padres ninth overall pick in 2010, will be seeing Dr. James Andrews today after it was announced he will be sidelined to start the year because of shoulder fatigue.

College baseball, here I come! I'm thinking about going to some games this weekend, but it's going to be in the 40s on Friday and Saturday. Now, Sunday, it's supposed to be 63 degrees -- that might be the game to see. OU v. Hofstra. OU has two good pitchers this year (Overton and Gray), but the position players are largely unproven. But, whatever. Just looking forward to getting in a ballpark.

Yeah, a lot of new faces in that Sooner line-up this year. Two freshman and a couple JuCo transfers. They really struggled offensively last season. That rotation is one of the best in the country, though.

I'll be making the trek to Vanderbilt on Saturday to see Kevin Ziomek against Long Beach State. Unfortunately, it's only supposed to be a high of 37 in Nashville...

We(Stony Brook) open up this weekend at Florida International.  This weekend's rotation will be Brandon McNitt(8-4, 2.76), Frankie Vanderka(3-3, 2.33, 5 SV), and freshman Daniel Zamora.  McNitt was the #2 starter last year and Vanderka was a swingman who closed for most of the year.  But, he started the decisive game against LSU in the Super Regionals and threw a complete game 3-hitter.

We lost 7 players to the pros(including the co-National Player of the Year Travis Jankowski), but return a decent core of hitters led by preseason All-American C Kevin Krause(.330/.399/.431).  Also returners from last year are defensive wizard 1B Kevin Courtney(.293/.402/.443), freshman All-American SS Cole Peragine(.304/.386./.411), Cape League veteran OF Tanner Nivins(.306/.377/.411), and freshman All-American OF Steven Goldstein(.337/.415/.494)

Impact freshmen project to be Zamora and INF Johnny Caputo.  Zamora(27th round, Blue Jays) and Caputo(12th round, Athletics) are 2012 draftees who both turned down hefty signing bonuses from the pros to come to Stony Brook.  The lefty Zamora has been ranging between 90-94 in preseason so there are high hopes for him.

Other highlights on the schedule include a 3-game series next weekend at UNC, appearing in a tournament at UNC-Wilmington playing the host Seahawks and the #12 ranked University of San Diego Torreos(led by Golden Spikes candidates Kris Bryant and Michael Wagner), and a midweek game on March 26th against St. John's.

Whitson out all year (shoulder), per Kendall Rogers. Ouch. His dad said the rehab process will be about four months. Stuff was still nasty in the Cape. Someone could still be interested in June.

What gets me is that he's felt the pain since his freshman year, but now is the time to get it looked at? I get wanting to prove he was good enough to turn down $2M, but waiting that long - and right before his junior year - was silly.

I heard over the summer he was sent home from the Cape because of this. This comes as no surprise to me. When someone suggested him as a Sox target, I said no way and this is why.
Should've had the operation done then.

Arkansas' depth in the pitching staff is great. We don't really have a less than decent pitcher. Going to come down to some sort of ability to hit a baseball. We just couldn't come through when we needed to last year at the plate.

I'm anxious to get the season started. Lots of good prospects. Go hogs.

UNC opens their season at home with a 3 game set against Seton Hall today at 3pm. Probable starters for the Tar Heels are Jr. LHP Kent Emmanuel, So. RHP Benton Moss, and Jr. LHP Hobbs Johnson. This year's pitching staff is deep, as the Heels only lost 2 of 62 pitching starts from last year with Emmanuel, Moss, and Johnson returning. Chris Munnelly is also back, who had 10 starts last year. The Heels have the 2nd most returning starting rotation wins with 22.

Preseason All-American Colin Moran, as well as Chaz Frank, and Brian Holberton look to continue their great Tar Heel careers and bring the Heels back to Omaha. Freshmen Skye Bolt (what a great name) and Landon Lassiter are expected to start Opening Day and will look to make an impact to keep that starting role.

This team looks very good on paper, but will need an offensive revival to keep up with expectations.

No, sounds like he's gonna be the Saturday guy as of now.

Pitchers are pretty versatile on this staff.  I wouldn't be shocked to see the rotation change frequently depending on who's hot.

JUCO transfer OF Marcus Davis hit a bomb in the 1st inning for his first hit as a Seminole.

Seton Hall and UNC in the top of the 9th and UNC leads 1-0.  Great pitchers duel between Kent Emmanuel and Jon Prosinski.

I went to see the Costal Carolina v James Madison game today. Had to catch an opener.

Keeping a boxscore eye on Tanner English, speedy cf for the Gamecocks, who is converting to a switch hitter as a sophomore. I've known the kid for 10 years, trust me he's never batted lefty - ever. Not even messing around in practice. So his obp is worth watching.

He got his first lefty hit today and then got caught stealing. But Holbrook, unlike Tanner is giving him the green light. So steals will be up if he gets on base.

Did you catch much of Jacob May, the Chanticleers' table-setter? He's supposed to be one of the better CF prospects.

He had a nice line drive in front of the right fielder to lead off the game and then later a grounder through the 1st/2nd hole to score the winning run.  Solid day at the plate.

Got smoked on a center field liner that he misplayed into a triple in the 4th.  Wasn't that hard of a play, ball was back and to his right and he just coasted to a ball that was hit harder than he thought.

Ugh. Caught the second game of the OU-Hofstra double header. Or rather, I should say that I caught the first three hours of that game. When my daughter and I left, OU was losing 9-7. They won an hour and 15 minutes later (11-10), when the Hofstra centerfielder dropped a fly ball. Let's just say that we saw an awful lot of mediocre pitching (OU starter Billy Waltrip lasted only three inings) and bad defense (8 errors total). Oh well, maybe Waltrip will improve over the season; it took awhile for the rotation to shake out last year.

Too bad I didn't go to the first game. That was a crisply pitched game, won by Jonathan Gray, and lasting only two hours, 20 minutes.

A kid worth keeping an eye on for casual observers and those that might catch some Cape league games this summer.

Gunnar Heidt, middle infielder for College of Charleston, (another kid from my sons high school).  I know him real well and he's off to a monster start.

Through 4 games he's 6/15 with a HR, 2 triples, 2 doubles, and 3 walks.  Great range and real athletic kid.  Monte Lee has moved him between 2nd and short as he decides between 2 other kids for the other middle infield spot.  Looks like he'll settle at short.

Playing for Harwich this summer with his high school teammate, Tanner English, CF for the Gamecocks.

Going to see Jonathan Gray pitch today. The Sooners are playing Pepperdine. Gray was recently described by Keith Law as "a certain first-rounder...holding 92-96 for six-plus innings,
touching 97, with an above-average slider that he could throw for strikes and throw at the back foot of a left-handed hitter."

Alas, it's going to be a cold one here. Won't get above 50, so it's time to pack some serious blankets.

Yep, Gray gets good velocity, even when he pitches into the late innings. He pitched a complete game gem last night, a 1-0 shut-out that only took 111 pitches and involved 12 strike-outs. Better than that game on 3/2. We saw Dillon Overton today. Whereas Gray will go in the first round, Overton will probably go later. Overton pitched 7.1 innings, and gave up 2 ER.

Just got back from seeing the lone remaining undefeated team in the country, Dartmouth College.

Their success isn't just a product of an easy schedule, they've beaten Minnesota on the road, Utah and UAB as well as some weaker squads. That's just the product of being a Northeast team with a badly timed spring break.

What makes them for-real though is their starting pitching. They trot out four guys who are all going to be picked in the draft. The lineup is young but has enough talent to score some runs. There's no predicting when they will lose a game because they are the most talented team in every game they play the rest of the way, and in most of them the talent gap is pretty large. It's baseball so they wont go undefeated but this streak could go on for a while. I'm hoping to see a Northeast team get some national love.

Just froze my butt off to watch another Jonathan Gray start. He's been getting some serious love from Keith Law, who has him in his top 10. He was in line to win the game 2-1 in the 9th when the shortstop committed an error and the catcher was credited with a passed ball. (The Sooners won it in the 12th on a wild pitch/passed ball.) Otherwise, Gray had a strong outing. 9 innings, 2 runs, 1 earned with 3 hits, 1 walk, and 12 strike-outs. Again, his velocity was amazingly consistent; he hit 100 a couple of times on the stadium gun late in the game. His control got a bit worse as the game progressed, though.

I just saw Dillon Overton pitch last night against Kansas. He was supposed to be a potential first round pick, but he's been overshadowed by his Sooner teammate, Jonathan Gray, who suddenly morphed into a potential 2nd overall pick behind Appel this season. Overton has been pitching well, but he's been limited a bit by some blisters on his fingers and hasn't pitched as far into games as Gray (who has been pitching complete games as of late). Last night, Overton had a good line (6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K), but he wasn't helped by the defense (4 errors!) and he ended up with a no-decision. As has become their custom, the Sooners won in extra innings. (Nine inning games are for other teams, I guess.)

Gunnar Heidt named player of the month in the SoCon.  Shortstop - College of Charleston.  Harwich this summer.

BASEBALL
Player
Gunnar Heidt, College of Charleston, So., SS
College of Charleston shortstop Gunnar Heidt hit .384 with 18 runs scored, 20 RBIs, 13 walks, five stolen bases and nine extra-base hits in March, helping the Cougars to a 12-7 record and a 7-4 start in league play. The sophomore from Garden City, S.C., opened and closed his month with matching six-game hitting streaks and hit safely in 15 of his 19 March contests, posting 10 multi-hit games. In a series win over No. 30 South Alabama to open the month, Heidt was 5-for-12 (.417) with three RBIs and the first of his three triples in the month. In a series win over Elon on March 8-10, he had another five hits, picking up three in the opener and two more in the rubber game, both doubles. Heidt was 3-for-5 with three walks and a triple in a two-game set with Appalachian State on March 22-23 but saved his best series for last. In CofC’s three-game sweep of Samford last weekend, Heidt was 8-for-17 (.471) with nine RBIs, a double, a triple, a home run and five runs scored. He drove in a career-high five runs in the Cougars’ 10-0 win on Sunday. With five triples this season, Heidt leads the SoCon and is second nationally.

First round of the Baseball Beanpot was today at campus sites.

In Amherst, Boston College put up a 4-spot in the top of the first, but UMass came from behind to win it 13-6. Minutemen starter, sophomore LHP Conor LeBlanc lasted just 2 innings (4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K). His replacement, freshman southpaw Evan Mackintosh, tossed three scoreless frames for the win while allowing a hit and a walk with 2 Ks. Lots of contributors on offense with a balanced 10-hit attack aided by 8 walks from BC pitching. Among them: LF Rich Graef (1/3, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI), RF Adam Picard (1/3, BB, SB, 1 R, 3 RBI on a bases-loaded triple in the 4th), 1B Bryan Dionicio (2/5, 1 R, 2 RBI), C John Jennings (3/4, 1 BB, 2 R, 1 RBI) and SS Vinny Scifo (2/3, R, RBI). It's just the 5th win of the year for UMass against 17 losses. BC falls to 6-26.

Meanwhile in Brookline, Northeastern crushed Harvard 10-2, getting 3 on the board in the first and adding a half-dozen in the third. Freshman James Mulry, a 6'3" lefty out of Boston Latin, shut down the Crimson in 7 IP with 1 unearned run on 6 H, 0 BB and 8 K. The Husky offense was led by the top 4 in the order: RF Aaron Barbosa (3/5, 2 R, RBI), SS Jason Vosler (2/5, double, 2 R), LF Brad Burcroff (1/3, double, R, 2 RBI) and 1B Rob Fonseca (2/4, RBI). NU improves to 20-13 on the season, while Harvard falls to 6-22.

Harvard and BC will play in the consolation game at Fenway on Monday, April 29 starting at 2 pm. UMass and NU will meet for the Beanpot championship in the nightcap. Tickets here.

BC takes 3rd place over the Crimson, 7-2. Steve Green gets the win (5 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K), with help on offense from SS Joe Cronin (3-for-4, no relation to the Sox HOFer) and CF Matt McGovern (1-for-3, 2 BB, 1 R, 2-RBI double). This on the heels of their first two ACC wins of the season (1-0 and 3-2 over Miami, the latter on a Matt Paré 11th-inning walk-off) in 23 tries. The Eagles, having won 3 of their last 4, are now 9-35 overall, while Harvard drops to 10-31.

NU trailed 2-0 early, but took the lead for good with a 4-run 4th to knock off UMass 6-3 for the Beanpot title. Rob Fonseca hit a leadoff HR  into the monster seats in the 4th, and Matt Cook tossed 4 innings of 1-hit relief for the win. Aaron Plunkett took the loss (5.1 IP, 5 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 K). The Huskies improve to 24-17 while the Minutemen fall to 10-25.

Looks like ESPN will actually be stepping up coverage of the NCAA playoffs this year. I feel like I'm dreaming and this can't be real.

During first-round coverage starting May 31, ESPN will carry every game from all 16 game sites – up from games at six sites last year, four in 2011 and just two in previous years.

Meaning, ESPN is going all-in on college baseball tournament tonnage. Its coverage of the first round – the Regionals – could include as many as 112 games over four days.

Last year, ESPN's game plan was only meant to cover as many as 83 games in the entire tournament, which uses a double-elimination format. This year, depending on play, ESPN could end up with 153 games – meaning every game in the tournament.

Why bother? Partly, the idea is to create a version of a whip-around channel, such as the NFL Network's RedZone channel for Sunday NFL action and ESPN's Goal Line channel for Saturday college football and Buzzer Beater channel for college basketball, which is offered on busy weekends and weeknights.

Wait, so Lewis & Clark get a bye until the NAIA World Series? That's awesome. Mainly because Lewis & Clark went 9-31.

Also, I was surfing around the NAIA website and I saw this guy, who is also awesome:

You're confused, and I take full responsibility. The school's official name is "Lewis-Clark State", not "Lewis & Clark". And while the Lewis & Clark Pioneers did indeed go 9-31, they're in Portland OR and are an NCAA Division III school.

The Lewis-Clark Warriors finished the regular season at 41-13, capping it off with a sweep of the Inland Cellular Tournament last weekend by scores of 20-8, 10-1 and 20-9. Yup -- 50 runs in 3 games.

Here's their home park, Harris Field:

That makes more sense.

Here's a story on the school hosting the World Series:  http://www.lcsc.edu/athletics/Baseball/2013/Press_Releases/viewNews.asp?ID=1993

They do get a bye to the World Series each year:
The field each year will be made up of host Lewis-Clark State and nine teams that qualify by winning one of nine NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round tournaments, which are played approximately two weeks prior to the Series.

I hope they do go 9-30 one season and then win it all.

And here's how the opening round unfolded:

Claremore (OK) Bracket - Unranked host and 4-seed Rogers State (Okla) swept all 4 games including a win over 3-seed and #26-ranked Lyon (Ark) and a pair of stunners (7-5 and 8-4) over top seed and #4-ranked Lubbock Christian (Tex). For the Hillcats, southpaw Brandon Bargas and righty Kyle Duncan each pitched their first complete games of the season in beating the Chaparrals. Lefty Shawn Spainhoward also went the distance for Rogers, whiffing 12 with no walks in their 8-4 win over unranked 5-seed Midland (Neb).

Cleveland (TN) Bracket - Top seeded host and #3-ranked Lee (TN) swept all 3 games by a combined score of 35-5 including a pair of wins over upset-minded 4-seed Avila (Mich). Whereas Rogers leaned on their starters, Lee relied on their stable of 9 different bullpen arms, who yielded just 3 hits in 11 combined innings while striking out 19.

Daytona Beach (FL) Bracket - Top-seeded host and #5-ranked Embry-Riddle (FL) swept all 3 games, but their last two wins were battles. 2-seed and #17 Concordia (CA) took a 6-5 lead with a four-run top of the 9th, but the Eagles got an RBI grounder to tie it and walked off on an RBI double. In the finale they nearly coughed up a 6-0 lead to 3-seed and #22 Lindsey Wilson (KY), yielding 3 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th before hanging on to advance.

Hattiesburg (MS) Bracket - Top-seeded and #6-ranked Northwood (TX) swept all 3 games, including a 9-0 shutout of 3-seed host and #25 William Carey (MS) and a 7-4 win over 2-seed and #14 Oklahoma Baptist after scoring 6 in the 1st inning.

Joliet (IL) Bracket - Top-seeded and #9-ranked York (Neb) swept all 3 games, including 5-0 and 4-3 wins over 3-seed and #27 Judson (IL), the latter in the final as they scored 3 in the bottom of the 8th to come from behind.

Kingsport (TN) Bracket - Though hosted by the Appalachian Athletic Conference, a local team still made some noise as top-seeded and #8-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan reached the final. However it was 2-seed and #20-ranked Missouri Baptist that advanced to the WS. The Spartans won 3 of 4, dropping their first matchup with TW 6-5 when the Bulldogs scored 4 in the 8th. The final game went 19 innings before MB pushed across the go-ahead run on a single, walk, bunt and sac fly. Matt Marsh capped off 6 innings of shutout relief with 2 Ks in the bottom half of the frame as the Spartans prevailed.

Montgomery (AL) Bracket - Top-seeded and #1-ranked Faulkner advanced to Idaho, but not without a flesh wound. They only played two teams in the regional, crushing 4-seed Indiana Tech in their opener 16-2. Game 2 brought a hiccup as 2-seed and #16-ranked Texas Wesleyan got a 2-run HR in the top of the 10th by Henry Yates to win it 4-2. That meant they had to sweep a double-header out of the loser's bracket Saturday. After eliminating Indiana Tech with another blowout 15-2, they got revenge on the Rams with a 9-1 smack down. That set up a rubber game with Texas Wesleyan, and the Eagles hammered them 14-2. All told, Faulkner outscored its opponents 54-9 in five games.

Oklahoma City (OK) Bracket - Top-seeded host and #2-ranked Oklahoma City University got stunned in their regional, first losing their opener to 5-seed and unranked Jamestown (ND) as Blake Stewart tossed a 2-hit complete game shutout to give the Knights their 30th win of the season. The Stars regrouped and advanced to Saturday where they got 14-2 payback on Jamestown in an elimination game. OKCU then squared off with 2-seed and #15-ranked Sterling College (KS), and the lone run the Warriors scored in the 2nd proved to be enough as Steven Cazares became the regional's second pitcher to shutout the Stars, this time on a 3-hitter. Sterling heads to Idaho.

Santa Clarita (CA) Bracket - Top-seeded host and #7-ranked The Master's College swept all 3 games, including a pair of wins (3-1, 11-7) over 3-seed and #30-ranked San Diego Christian. The Mustangs trailed in the finale 4-0 before tying it up with 4 runs in the 5th, and put it away with 5 more in the 7th.

D-II Update

ATLANTIC (Winston-Salem NC) - Top seed Millersville (PA) is out, losing to both #4 Shippensburg (PA) and #3 Seton Hill (PA). Those two will play today, with Shippensburg needing to win twice.

CENTRAL (Mankato MN) - Top seed Minn St-Mankato plays #5 St. Cloud (MN), which needs to win twice.

EAST (Manchester NH) - #6 Franklin Pierce stunned top seed Wilmington (DE) in the regional opener 7-0 and will play in the title game. Wilmington faces #4 Southern NH today at noon, with FP getting the winner at 4 pm to decide the auto-bid.

MIDWEST (Springfield MO) - Another 6-seed, Bellarmine (KY), could emerge here. The Knights have already knocked off top seed Ashland (OH), and they'll face #3 Grand Valley (MI) this afternoon. The Lakers are unbeaten, and destroyed Bellarmine yesterday 18-0, forcing the Knights to beat #5 Lewis (IL) last night 13-1. Bellarmine will have to sweep a pair against Grand Valley today to advance.

SOUTH (Tampa FL) - Top seed Tampa U. is a win away. #4 West Florida will have to beat them twice today.

SOUTH CENTRAL (Kingsville TX) - #3 St. Edward's (TX) will face #5 St. Mary's (TX) at 2:30 today, with the winner needing to knock off top seed Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5:30.

SOUTHEAST (Mount Olive NC) - Another surprise bracket, with #4 Coker (SC) unbeaten. Yesterday was monumental with Coker knocking top seed and host Mount Olive into the loser's bracket, 5-3, as Alex Hernandez took a one-hitter into the seventh inning and Zach Loraine pitched two scoreless innings to close it out. Then #5 Georgia College eliminated #2 seed SC-Aiken 9-2, and did the same to top seed and host Mount Olive 2-1. The latter win came on a Rob Hogencamp walk-off bases-loaded single with one out in the last of the 9th, while Christian Bragg tossed a 6-hit CG. That sets up today's showdown between the 4 and 5 seeds, with Georgia College needing to win twice.

WEST (St. George UT) - They're playing on Bruce Hurst Field, and an upstart will come out of this region. #4 Chico State (CA) is unbeaten, and #6 Grand Canyon (AZ) will need to beat them twice today. Yesterday Chico put the Antelopes into the loser's bracket, 4-1, and GCU responded by eliminating #2 Sonoma State (CA) in dramatic fashion, 8-7. The 'Lopes scored 4 in the bottom of the 8th to take an 8-3 lead, then held off the Seawolves after they scored 4 of their own in the top of the 9th. Sonoma had a pair of runners on when Mark Jarrett struck out Sam Montgomery to end it.

D-II Regionals Wrap-Up

EAST (Manchester NH) - Top seed Wilmington (DE) knocked off host and #4-seed Southern NH 2-1 on a Josh Hampton walk-off HR to lead off the last of the 10th.
