So BC picked up a commitment from AJ Turner point guard from New Hampton Prep. Turner is ranked 106 in the country. Huge get and Christian is now 6 for 6 (including transfers) closing during official visits.

Christian is quietly doing a very good job. And BC finally understands that you can't go cheap on the assistants. If this team can land Sharma or Falzon, this program is going places.
Well it looks like Stanford's coach is coming out to boston to meet with Sharma before his official visit. Sounds like he might be concerned.

Finishing with Sharma and/or Falzon would be unbelievable.

Just an incredible start for Christian and Murphy especially.   It seems like they might really be building something.  If they could get Sharma, then you are really looking at something unbelievable.

Preston Murphy is going to be really hard to keep more than a year or two at this point.

One other thing that makes this commit so impressive is that he is originally from Detroit and it appears he held an offer from MSU.

Not really germane to this season but ESPN's 30 for 30 series premieres on Tuesday with "Playing for the Mob", the story of the BC point shaving scandal, as seen through the eyes of former player and "shaver" Jim Sweeney.

Should be an interesting take on that episode. I'm sure this is the last thing BC wants aired, especially with recruiting in high gear and the basketball season right around the corner.

Nice win over New Mexico coming off of the UMass loss. The D effort has been consistent. Hopefully the offense will come together after a few games.

I noticed BC didn't get either Sharma or Falzon, dammit.  That would have really made next year's class a really good one.

Solid game yesterday vs WVU and that asshole Huggins, after leading at half WV went on something like a 15-2 run to grab lead. Last years team would've rolled over while they bricked up 3s, these guys hung tough to the end

Better days are comin

We lose our best player after this year. I'd be hard pressed to say better days are coming. I do like the emphasis on defense but holy shit does this team play remedial offense. Odio is averaging a solid 2.8ppg in 24 mins.
isn't Hanlan only a junior?

Looks like the bball team is following the lead of the fball team. Again keeping it close against a decent team. Let's see if they can win one here.

They are not very good, but still it is nice to watch a BC team actually working hard out there again. They are clearly trying to play defense, and actually attacking the boards.  They really need to find another guy who can score

BC is nothing more than a schedule filler in men's hoops. Yes they have had years where they have had good teams and went to the Big Dance....only to get bounced in the first round. Yes they had a couple of years in the early 80's and then in the mid 90's when they went to the Elite 8 and the teams with Sean Williams, Greg Smith, Dudley, etc. were very good, but all in all, BC hoops is and has been a second tier program for the most part. About every 10 years they catch lightning in a bottle but for the most part, a trip to the NIT is a good season for them. Look at the banners in Conte. In the last 20 years or so, there are more NIT appearances than NCAA appearances and overall no appearances in post season play seem to dominate the landscape.

My personal feeling is that BC doesn't give a crap about men's hoops. They have it only because they need to have a hoops team in order to be in a Power 5 conference and thus get the benefits for football and the academic consortium that goes along with being in the ACC for example. I think it all goes back to the point shaving scandal in the late 70's/ early 80's. No they didn't drop basketball but they did and continue to do nothing to enhance it, and quite frankly put up every possible roadblock they can to mitigate it.  They do not  do anything on the admissions side to help in recruiting, knowing full well that in basketball, by the nature of the recruiting pool, many of the players who could help on the court cannot get in to BC under its current admissions standards. As such, the coaches are stuck with being creative and having to cast a wide net that usually means that few, if any, recruits from traditional basketball hotbeds ever set foot on the campus. They easily could have taken the Georgetown approach that was so successful for years but they would have nothing of it. Within the conference they could have followed models for schools such as Duke and Wake Forest but have not chosen to do so. Why? You have to ask them but IMHO it is because the administration wants nothing to do with the cesspool that is major college basketball. It is a necessary evil. You can see it in admissions, in the failure to upgrade facilities and the hiring of its coaches. BC used to have (pre shaving) some legendary coaches (Bob Cousy, Chuck Daly, even Dr. Tom ended up being a very successful coach post BC), but since then other than Gary Williams, not so much.

I thought that when Leahy came from Marquette you would see an uptick in the emphasis on basketball, but it never happened. Football drives the bus in D1 sports and certainly it drives the bus at BC. Although many more of you are much better hoopologists than I ever will hope to be, I don't see BC, with the exception of its 1 in every 10 year run, be anything better than a 15-17 win team, at best for the foreseeable future.  With that mindset, BC "is what it is" in basketball....a schedule filler.

Can someone please explain to me this concept of the withering BC "admission standards"?   Knowing several BC football players personally in the 1980s, I know with certainty that the BC "vaunted standards" did not apply back then (at least to those guys, knuckleheads every one of them).   And why is it that Duke, Stanford, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, UVA.....etc...etc.....all of which are clearly superior to BC (academically), can somehow get kids into their schools, but BC cannot?  I would understand the answer if it is that BC has similar standards to those schools, but no top HS recruit that is qualified (both athletically and academically) is ever going to go to BC if he can get into Duke, Stanford, etc..  If that's not the answer, then is Bernie quite right?  i.e.   BC simply has no interest in competing in college hoop beyond the lucky 1 in 10 season that Bernie noted?   I mean really, BC needs to get over itself (or should be applauded for not swimming in the cesspool so to speak).

The admission standards in football is less of a problem than it is in basketball IMO, which is one of the reasons we can and do compete in football.  I wouldn't be surprised if there are lower admission standards for Duke and Georgetown recruits, especially the latter starting under John Thompson.  The other schools are more or less at the same level as we are, though it's hard to say if we don't get, ahem, less academically inclined recruits because of our mediocrity or we're mediocre because we're never even in the mix with these recruits outside of the flash in the pan.  Given there were rumors we could have had Jay Wright if only we ponied up some more money, I'm inclined to believe Leahy isn't particularly interested in competing in, well, basically all sports.

Kind of makes you wonder if they pulled the trigger on Al Skinner too soon and makes the Bob Ryan hatchet job on him look even worse.

I don't really understand this from a mathematical perspective? 3 v. 20+

Wouldn't it make more sense to compete in a sport where you only need to admit 3 kids a year that are below your standards?

It's all about the Flynn Fund, isn't it, and no one is paying $ to tailgate before bball? (Scratch the above - math perspective now understood)

If you can't compete with Duke/UNC/UVA/Wake for smart kids, you're surely not going to compete with FSU for dumb kids.

But hey, if we can get a scandal going at Duke/Wake/Cuse/Louisville, we may have a winning program . . .

They're doing a "whiteout" for Fri v. Providence, but the shirts are neither free, nor do they have enough for every seat.

So pathetic.

BC blows 9 point lead with 1:50 left in regulation.  In OT now.   Heckman got hacked on the potential game winning drive, clifford misses 2 ft gimme put back.

It's hard to watch officiating this bad

That is some terrible BC defense.  Granted, it was a classic offensive moving screen, but the Pitt kid goes in for an uncontested layup with 5 seconds left to go up 1.

Props to twibnotes and the other UVA fans on here. The Hoos came out in numbers, upper level included. On par with Duke, UNC and Kansas in terms of numbers, above the NC teams in terms of lack of douchiness.

Thanks for the kind words. That was the most nervous I've been all year watching UVA play. That BC team showed some real toughness.

Tony Bennett had a lot of nice things to say about the Eagles in his press conference.

BC needs to move to a smaller gym. It was around 75% Heels. BC ticket office also needs to stop playing games.

As for the team, can't imagine how they'd look without Olivier. Brown looked really smart out there though, outrebounded Clifford.

Again, need to play for 40 minutes, not 30-32.

This.  I tried to get some lower level tickets for someone for a Christmas present, but the "best available" seats on the ticket office site were all way up in the upper level.  I called the ticket office and said that couldn't possibly be right and the guy there basically admitted to me that they were still refusing to sell individual lower level tickets (in mid-December!) in the hopes of selling limited season ticket packages.  The ticket office there should be bending over backwards to accommodate ANYONE who wants to go to these games, not creating a false deficit of tickets that doesn't really exist.

It should depend on where he goes in the draft, no? If they could get Hanlan back for his senior year they could actually have a chance to be somewhat good next year

I wish Hanlan had played one year with the kind of talent Troy Bell had around him in 2001. His 2013 ACC tourney performance had me seeing great things for his BC career. Oh well.

No Kennedy Meeks for UNC tomorrow, but he hardly played when they played in Chestnut Hill.  Good luck.

So is it possible BC is even worse next year then they have been in recent years? The team will have no talent on it at all.

Unless Diallo is a difference maker on defense, I don't see how we win more than 8-10. Donahue really did screw us.
I don't follow it as much, but is Christian recruiting well?

He missed out on a couple of big local products but Diallo (last year) and Turner (this year) are both top 150 players.  Ty Graves is class of 2016 and he is also a Top 150 Player.

I also would expect them to looks at 5th year transfers again next year.

Edit:  BC's last 150 Player was Reggie Jackson in 2008.

Wasn't the idea to pair HC Christian with highly paid assistants who could recruit?  Seems BC hasn't been that successful recruiting so far and probably goes to show how poorly BC basketball is thought of.  This guy just left where he grew up and the ACC for Nebraska!
