I'm going to have my son do one of the CC league baseball camps this year.   He's 9.  Any comments about any of them, or are any programs better than others?   Due to location (and fact my daughter will be in Hyannis for dance this week), looking at Falmouth, Cotuit or Hyannis.

I went to the Hyannis camp when I was a kid (Varitek was a coach) and it was ok.  I hear the Cotuit one is the best and I was going to send my kids there last summer.

My sons both went to the Kettleers camp for a couple of years and loved it. Coach Roberts looked and sounded like a real coach, but never lost sight of the fact the kids were kids.

Their coaches included Justin Maxwell, Josh Harrison, and. Justin Smoak. Maxwell stayed on as a counselor for a week after he'd broken his wrist and was done for the league that summer, because he's Justin Maxwell, and Justin Maxwell is awesome.

Edit: I especially loved that the kids got camp getting instructed by the finest college player in the country for something like 75 bucks a week.

My kids have done Falmouth camps for a number of years. The non-elite camp is more play time fun, not intensive baseball skills. The elite camp (they changed the name to something else) took my older son (age 10)from passable to the leader of his AAA team.

At Falmouth they let the kids go out on the field for the anthem with the big guys. Always a hit.

Cotuit would be cool as Mike Roberts(aka Brian Roberts' dad) is the manager.  Not sure if the manager makes appearances at camp, but that would be cool.  One of our former pitchers played there for a summer and loved it.

One of our pitchers is going to be on Orleans: Sophomore LHP Tyler Honahan.  He's not on the current roster but he told me he's going up to play for the Firebirds.  He looks to be there for half the season as he's reaching his inning limit.

Honahan, a Colorado native, was 7-2 this year with a team-leading 2.89 ERA in 15 appearances(11 starts).  He pitched 71.2 IP and only gave up 23 ER to go with 50 hits.  He struck out 54 and walked 33.  He's not an especially hard thrower and is tend to walk more than he should, but he knows how to pitch and keep hitters off-balance.   He did beat USC this year with a 6.2 IP performance in which he only gave up 2 runs and struck out 4 and also had a brilliant performance against NEC champ Bryant(6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 4 K, 1 BB) although he got the loss.

On the current rosters of the 10 Cape League teams, there are 139 players from teams in this year's NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. They represent 46 of the 64 teams in the field.

LSU leads the CCBL contingent with 9 players, following by Vanderbilt with 8. Arizona State, Louisville, Maryland & Virginia have 7 players each. Alabama, Florida State, North Carolina, Oregon, Rice & UNLV are sending 5 players apiece to the Cape.

A few CCBL teams have incomplete rosters posted, so it's likely these numbers are on the low side.

So it looks like I am going to be on the Cape August 8-12 (give or take a day on either end) this year. Looks like it'll be playoff time, which is a little unfortunate, as we would pick a place based on the baseball schedule if we could.

So anyway, given the uncertainty as to which games are when and where, does anyone have any suggestions where we should stay to have the best chance of being not too far from some games?

The Cape is a big place driving-distance-wise (it takes well over and hour to get from Falmouth to Orleans in the summer), so it depends largely on what general part of the Cape you want to be in. Teams are geographically concentrated by division, so if you want to be close to games you should probably focus on the Lower Cape (Orleans/Brewster/Chatham/Harwich/Dennis) or the Upper Cape (Cotuit/Falmouth/Wareham/Bourne/Hyannis). So, for example, if you were to stay in Brewster, you'd be reasonably close to five teams, two of which will make the playoffs. Same with staying in Falmouth.

Not so much in terms of pro potential, apparently. 34th rounder on Saturday.

Between Team USA additions, and the players still active in the College World Series (which both these guys are with Vandy), the first 2 weeks of the season are especially nutty for CCBL managers & GMs. This is where the open tryouts held earlier in the spring come in handy, as any local kids in SE MA (including HS seniors and kids playing Legion ball) who aren't already playing in other collegiate summer leagues will get signed to fill out various rosters.

Also, this year's Cape League HOF class was named earlier in the week. Corddry's daughter Alex is a sports reporter for WHDH 7 in Boston, and she's easy on the eyes.

WEST YARMOUTH – The 15th class for the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame was announced Sunday at the First Pitch brunch, and includes Sam Fuld of the Minnesota Twins and four other former stars.

Fuld's induction marks the fifth consecutive year an active major league player will be honored. Fuld, who played for Hyannis in 2003, and the Class of 2014 will be enshrined in ceremonies on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Chatham Bars Inn.

Also elected to the Hall of Fame were three former Outstanding Pitcher Award winners – Eric Beattie (Bourne, 2003), Phil Corddry (Orleans, 1968) and Bob St. Pierre (Falmouth, 1994), as well as Donald Hicks Sr., a longtime Mashpee and Cotuit player and former MVP, who will be honored posthumously.

A Durham, New Hampshire native, Fuld starred at Stanford before making his mark with the Hyannis Mets in 2003. An outstanding outfielder, he hit .361 with 10 stolen bases. He has been in the major leagues since 2007 playing for the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay, Oakland and now Minnesota.

Beattie was a star pitcher for the Bourne Braves in 2003 Cape League season. The University of Tampa product posted a 4-0 record with a 0.39 ERA, second lowest in the league's modern era behind only Hall of Famer Eric Milton's 0.21. Beattie walked only six and allowed just 23 hits in 46 innings while pitching the Braves to the West Division title. He was a second round draft pick of Detroit.

St. Pierre earned his Outstanding Pitcher Award for the Falmouth Commodores in 1994. The Richmond right-hander went 9-1 record with a 1.44 ERA. He pitched in the New York Yankees' system until 1998.

Corddry was a workhorse for Orleans in 1968, pitching 92 innings with a league-best 9-2 record 108 strikeouts and a 1.76 ERA. The Maryland southpaw was drafted by Boston and played in the Red Sox minor league system until 1972.

Hicks was one of the top pitchers in the Cape League during the late 1940s and '50s. He led the Mashpee Warriors to the 1948 championship and was named MVP in 1950. When Mashpee withdrew from the league in the mid-'50s, he joined Cotuit. Hicks was a captain of the Mashpee Fire Department and recreational director for the Town of Mashpee in the '60s.

At the Orleans-Brewster game right now, just saw a play I've never (or can't remember ever) seen: a double play on rundowns. One out, men on first and third. Batter hits a grounder to first. Runners go on contact. 1B man throws home. Runner is only halfway there. One throw, tagged out. Meanwhile runner from first is trying to make it to third and is also tagged out on the second rundown. Dumb baserunning.

Believe it or not, I saw it happen on an even worse scale -- in a professional game in the late 70s. The Holyoke Millers had the bases loaded with no outs, and ALL THREE RUNNERS were caught in rundowns. But it wasn't on a batted ball. There was a pickoff attempt at first, and when the ball briefly got away from the first baseman the runner on 3B broke for home, only to be thrown out 1-3-2-5-2. Then the other runners attempted to advance. There was little chance of getting the guy heading for 3rd, so the catcher threw to the shortstop covering 2B. Another rundown there, but the runner from 1B tripped en route and was tagged out on the play. But the fielder fell down as well, prompting the runner on 3B (who began the inning at 2B) to head for home. But the shortstop, lying flat on his back, was alert enough to flip the ball to his teammate (pretty sure it was the first baseman) who threw to the plate for the final out there on another rundown.

A triple play on the basepaths. And if it was the first baseman throwing for the final out, he had 2 assists on the play.

Just wanted to report in on the Cotuit kids baseball camp.   My son had a great time.  It was held at a local elementary school, but was staffed by the players.  What a nice bunch of guys.   It was half day camp, and was oriented toward having fun vs. intense skills work or game work.   Tuesday the kids got to go on field pre game to meet players, get autographs and stand on field during national anthem.   Friday ended with a slip and slide session, which the head coach joined in on.    What a great facility - beautiful park in a lovely location.

As a birthday present from his grandparents, my son got a bat from the Barnstable Bat Company.   We visited the "showroom" (it's basically a house with some outbuildings), and he picked out a maple one, which was custom engraved on site while we waited.   He had many players sign the handle area on it (it's black top with natural handle), which I though was a great.

I drove Rt 28 between Hyanns and Cotuit more times in the week than I did in my entire life (daughter had a week long dance competition in Hyannis), so a crazy but fun week.

For $100, that's a great camp.   Hopefully we can work out schedule so he can do it again in the future.

OK, got a few days on the Cape coming up, August 8 or so until the 12th or 13th...I am trying to plan around the Cape League playoffs but I can't find even a rudimentary playoff schedule. Anyone know where I can find one?

Based on the current standings, any guesses where there are more likely to be games during that period?

Where will you be staying?

As of today, Harwich, Y-D and Orleans have clinched playoff spots in the East, while Brewster and Chatham fight for the last spot.

The West is done: Bourne, Falmouth, Hyannis and Cotuit will be in the playoffs.

There will be at least one playoff game in each of these towns next week, beginning Tuesday. The final locations and times will be decided after the end of the regular season tomorrow. The series are best-of-three and there are no days off between games or series, so the schedule will depend on whether or not the series go two or three games.

It's all on the Cape Cod League web site.

I couldn't find the playoff stuff on the website...and I was hoping to use the playoff info to help decide where to stay.

Due to rain yesterday and some more (in spots today) start of the playoffs is back to this Wednesday.  Right now the only guarantees are there will be games in Harwich, Bourne and Falmouth on Wednesday and Hyannis and Cotuit on Thursday.  Everything else other than Wareham being eliminated is up in the air until Monday/Tuesday.

Ok, so it is either YD @ Orleans at Eldredge or Cotuit @ Bourne at Doran tomorrow night...which game does SoSH suggest?

This SoSHer will be at Eldredge to watch Orleans finish off the Red Sox tomorrow. Get your chairs out there early!

Eldredge and Doran are really far apart.
